With Carleton College Professor William North Fabled Sarajevo and the Glorious Coast of Croatia & Montenegro Aboard the All-Suite, 50-Cabin Corinthian May 22 June 2, 2014 Early Registration Savings of $1,000 Per Cabin

Dear Carleton College Alumni and Friends, There are certain journeys that are so unique, they capture the imagination of travelers. The journey described in this brochure, which combines an exploration of Sarajevo one of the most intriguing cities in all of Europe with a cruise along the sublime coast of Croatia and Montenegro, is certainly one such journey. Your adventure begins in Venice, where you will embark the 50-cabin, all-suite Corinthian the perfect vessel for navigating the islands and inlets and bays of Croatia s and Montenegro s famed coastline. Cruise past the spires, domes, and bell towers of Venice and into the Adriatic Sea, where dense, dark green forests spread right down to the water s edge, and harbors are guarded by beautifully preserved historic towns and centuries-old battlements that appear to rise out of the waters. Corinthian will cruise the only fjord in southern Europe to reach Kotor, and call at several of the enchanting islands of Croatia including unspoiled Vis, fertile Hvar, picturesque Korcula, and the unusually formed Kornati Archipelago. When you disembark Corinthian in beautiful Dubrovnik, known as the Pearl of the Adriatic, and begin the land portion of your journey, you ll enjoy a full day exploring one of the finest medieval cities in Europe, where the streets are lined with splendid examples of Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and baroque architecture. From Dubrovnik we will drive to Sarajevo, passing through glorious scenery and stopping to visit Mostar, where the buildings and its landmark stone bridge, set majestically along the banks of the pale-green Neretva River, reveal both oriental traditions and western influences. Once in Sarajevo, you ll experience one of Europe s most fascinating and loveliest cities, yet it is one that few travelers have visited. Lying between gently sloping hills in a splendid river valley, Sarajevo is a city with a rich, vibrant culture that draws upon the traditions of Christians, Jews, and Muslims who have coexisted and intermingled here for centuries. Noted for its scenic setting and its unusual historical and cultural monuments, Sarajevo is also known for an architecture that blends elegant modern boulevards with the narrow lanes and buildings of the Old Town, where the markets will remind you of the souks of the Middle East. This is your opportunity to savor two superlative experiences: discovering magnificent Sarajevo and the landscapes of other parts of Bosnia-Herzegovina; and exploring the sublime coast of Croatia and Montenegro aboard an elegant and spacious small cruise ship. Join Carleton History Professor William North this year for a once-in-alifetime land and sea journey to this spectacular corner of the world. Sincerely, Frances L. Spangler 91 President, Carleton College Alumni Association P.S. Corinthian has only 50 cabins (all suites) and this program is co-sponsored by other organizations, so I urge you to contact the Carleton College Alumni Adventures office at carleton@studytours.org or (800) 811-7244 to reserve your space today. Cruise, Learn & Be Inspired Our cruise will be accompanied by a faculty leader, who will lecture on various topics relating to the destinations. After receiving his PhD in medieval history from the University of California, Berkeley and holding a postdoctoral fellowship in Byzantine Studies at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C., Bill North joined the history faculty at Carleton College in 1999. He has developed courses focused on religion and society in the late Roman world, all aspects of the early Middle Ages, and a range of courses focused on the history of the Byzantine Empire. In 2011, North received an NEH Teaching Enhancement Grant which enabled him to visit historic sites throughout Turkey and Greece in support of his Byzantine courses. Most recently, North co-taught an off-campus studies program in Rome that brought together history, art history, urban studies, and religious studies. In his scholarship and teaching, Professor North is particularly interested in the dynamics of religious and cultural encounter; the role of art and architecture in communicating political and religious ideas and identities; and the ways in which the legacies of the ancient world are preserved and re-appropriated for contemporary purposes, especially within the Mediterranean World. In addition to being Associate Professor of History, Professor North has also directed the European Studies Concentration and currently co-directs the Medieval and Renaissance Studies Concentration as well as the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program at Carleton. Lecturer is subject to change. The spectacular Bay of Kotor

Nautilus Club Veranda Suite Corinthian Sets the Standard for Private-Style Cruising In an era of mega cruise ships that carry thousands of passengers, Corinthian is a delightful alternative. More like a private yacht than a cruise ship, Corinthian accommodates only 100 guests in 50 suites. Corinthian s limited guest capacity, fine facilities, and distinctive style of operation attract like-minded travelers who return again and again to enjoy its custom-crafted itineraries and a style of cruising that is rarely found today. All of Corinthian s suites face outside, providing views of the sea and landscape. Several have a private balcony. There are expansive open deck areas and attractive facilities, including a gym, spa, library (with Internet access), beauty salon, two lounges, a sun deck with Jacuzzi, and an outdoor cafe. An elegant restaurant accommodates all guests in an open, unassigned seating. An elevator serves all decks. A resident physician attends a well-equipped infirmary. Wi-Fi is available throughout the ship. Served by 65 seasoned officers and crew, Corinthian complies with the latest international safety regulations, including those of the U.S. Coast Guard, meets the requirements of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and is outfitted with the most current navigational and communications technology. Corinthian is equipped with retractable fin stabilizers and a fleet of Zodiac inflatable craft for forays ashore.

Timeless Sarajevo Effortlessly straddling both eastern and western traditions, Sarajevo, the magnificent capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is one of the loveliest and most historic cities in Europe, with centuries of influence from the Ottoman and Austrian Empires on display. The city retains a particular, arresting charm with its many cafes and theaters that have sprouted among the traditional buildings of varying architectural styles. Its breathtaking backdrop of seemingly endless hills and towering mountains the location of the 1984 Winter Olympic Games isolate the city, creating a timeless world. Despite its seclusion, Sarajevo has always kept its doors open to the rest of the world. Adherents of Islam, Orthodoxy, Catholicism, and Judaism have coexisted in Sarajevo for centuries, and it is one of the few places on Earth where you will find an Orthodox and a Catholic church, a mosque, and a synagogue within easy walking distance of each other. Our exploration of this vibrant city will allow you to experience, in depth, the treasures of what has been called the European Jerusalem.
