Several national car rental services are also available at Monterey Airport. However, parking on the NPS base is limited, and delegates are recommended to make the short walk from the Hyatt Regency Monterey to the meeting rooms in the WAVES Institute wing of the NPS Mechanical Engineering Building. Proximity to other major cities and airports in approximate distances: San Francisco - 117 miles; from SF Airport - 102 miles; from San Jose - 70 miles; from Los Angeles city limit - 350 miles Driving from San Jose or the Bay Area is also an option, approximately 2 hours drive. Located about 60 miles south of San Jose, the Monterey Peninsula is tucked away from major Interstate highways. If you aren t in a hurry, try the Pacific Coast Highway (Route 1) from the North or South to get to Monterey. Highway 101 also runs from Los Angeles to San Jose and offers an exit to Monterey through Salinas. WEATHER Sunny California is not a true description of this part of the state. Throughout the year, daytime temperatures vary; summers are generally damp and foggy. With very rare exceptions the days are never hot (over 65-70 F/ 18-21C). Nighttime

temperatures range from about 40-60 F/ 4-16C. The annual mean temperature is 64 degrees Fahrenheit (17C), +- 8 degrees. ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES The electric power supply is 110, with a frequency of 60 hertz. Accordingly, portable computers may require a voltage converter. Power outlets are mostly for plugs with two parallel pins and a ground. Appliances that use 220 volts will require a voltage converter. CURRENCY The unit of currency is the US dollar. Automatic Teller Machines are generally available for withdrawal of US dollars. The Hyatt Regency Monterey advertises currency exchange services as well. CREDIT CARDS AND CHECKS Almost all shops, restaurants, and hotels accept major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard and American Express). Checks are generally only accepted if local but traveler s checks in US dollars are usually accepted by most businesses. We hope to be able to welcome you in June to the NPS in Monterey California.
