Final Project Documentation Matt Poston 7 Dec 15 1. Site Purpose The purpose of my final project will be to create a website highlighting some of the available hiking around the state of Indiana. I selected this topic as I am an avid hiker, and am always looking for the next great adventure. The background knowledge I bring to this topic is extensive time spent on the trails (particularly of Morgan-Monroe State Forest and sections of the Knobstone Trail) and back-country camping. My intended audience would be other hiking enthusiasts, or those who are just looking to get started with hiking, and might not know all that the State of Indiana has to offer. 2. Needs Analysis The site will address several specific needs to new and intermediate hikers in Indiana, including but not limited to: List of Commonly-Used Trails Links to Maps of Trails Sample Pack Lists How to Read a Compass "Leave No Trace" principle Tips & Tricks The site will include engaging visual effects in order to heighten the desire for visitors to explore the outdoors and backcountry of Indiana. 3. Goals Provide a vital resource to novice and intermediate Hoosier hikers. Entice a larger portion of residents into taking advantage of available trails. Encourage hikers to email us. 4. Audience Characteristics My intended audience would be other hiking enthusiasts, or those who are just looking to get started with hiking, and might not know all that the State of Indiana has to offer. Experienced hikers probably already own much of the gear required for a day-hike and possibly overnight equipment, and are likely passably familiar "Leave No Trace" principles and other hiking basics. Those new to hiking might have gone out on a trail once or twice, but might not be familiar with trailheads located within state parks or
forests. They might have little or no equipement to speak of, and might not be familiar with common practices as it relates to hiking etiquette and safety. 5. Primary Audience The Primary Audience for this site will be Indiana residents, looking to take advantage of state-owned trails in State Parks and State Forests. Knowledge of available trails and hiking subculture may vary by individual, though all that fall into the Primary Audience will be interested in learning more about hiking within the state. The audience will use the website to bolster their knowledge of Indiana hiking, and the website will become an important source of information for their pre-trip planning. 6. Secondary Audience The Secondary Audience will be comprised of out-of-state visitors, who may hold the (erroneous) view that there is no hiking to be enjoyed in Indiana, incorrectly concluding that a lack of elevation change in the state means a lack of viable or challenging trail. For the Secondary Audience, the website will (hopefully) provide a counterpoint to that set of beliefs about the state, highlighting some of the picturesque - and surprisingly rugged - terrain that Indiana has to offer. 7. Competition Indiana Department of Natural Resources List of Long Distance Trails Clean layout Easy to read Lacking in-depth content Lacking visually-interesting imagery "Just the bare facts" government website Hoosier Hikers Council Modern design and visually appealing I particularly like the map of Morgan-Monroe State Forest as the header image Easy to navigate Very much geared toward intermediate/experienced hikers, particularly those interested in building and maintaining trails Very little content for novice hikers
