Petra, Jordan Petra, Jordan Petra Jordan is a country in the Middle East. It is on the continent called Asia. Jordan is mostly made up of desert and has beautiful red and orange sandy scenery. People in Jordan speak Arabic. Petra is an ancient city. Petra is located in the southwest part of Jordan. Some people also call it the Rose-Red City. The city of Petra is carved into beautiful red rocks, which is why it has the name Rose-Red City. It was founded over 2,000 years ago. Back then, Petra was a busy city with a treasury, a theater, a palace, and many houses carved into stone on the hillside. Many people lived in Petra back then. Today, Petra is a tourist destination and millions of people visit it every year. Not as many people live in Petra today, because it is mostly a tourist destination. But some people do still live there. Also, many camels and horses live in Petra with their owners. Page 2 of 9

Bogota, Colombia Bogota, Colombia Bogotá, Colombia Colombia is a country in South America. It borders the Caribbean Sea. A lot of the landscape in Colombia is rainforest and jungle. The mountains are very green. It rains a lot in Colombia. People in Colombia speak Spanish. Bogotá is the capital of Colombia. There are millions of people that live in Bogotá. It is a very high altitude city. That means that the city is on top of a mountain. It is two miles above sea level! Because it is so high up in the air, sometimes people get sick with mountain sickness. There is a special tea in Bogotá that people drink to help them with mountain sickness. Page 3 of 9

Taipei, Taiwan Taipei, Taiwan Taiwan is a small island in Asia. An island is a small piece of land that is surrounded by ocean. The capital of Taiwan is called Taipei. People in Taiwan speak Mandarin Chinese. Taipei 101 is the tallest building in Taipei. It used to be the tallest building in the world! Up until 2009, Taipei 101 was the tallest building in the world, standing at over 1,600 feet. There are 101 floors in the building, which is why the building is called Taipei 101. The building is really cool because there is a pendulum inside of the building. A pendulum is a heavy weight that is attached to a piece of string and swings. A really large pendulum was put inside of the tall building to help it stand still when there is a very strong wind. Taipei has a lot of beautiful Buddhist temples. Many Taiwanese residents go to the temples to pray. The architecture of Buddhist temples is very unique and different from how buildings look in the United States. Page 4 of 9

Prague, Czech Republic Prague, Czech Republic Prague, Czech Republic The Czech (pronounced check ) Republic is a country on the continent of Europe. People in the Czech Republic speak the language Czech. It is similar to the Russian language. The capital of the Czech Republic is Prague (pronounced prah-g ). It is a very old European city. There are old, beautiful buildings there. One of the most famous buildings has a clock on it. Every hour, the clock sings a song to people standing in the town square. People come from all over the world to watch the clock sing to them. One of the most famous Czech dishes is fried cheese. People eat it while walking down the old streets. During Christmastime, a winter market is set up in the town square, and lots of people come to buy treats, gifts, and fried cheese. Page 5 of 9

Chichen Itza, Mexico Chichen Itza, Mexico Temple of Kukulkan at Chichén Itzá Mexico is a country in North America. It is the country that borders the United States to the south. People in Mexico speak Spanish. Millions of people live in Mexico. Many, many years ago, Mexico was home to the Mayan civilization. The Mayans ruled Mexico 1,500 years ago. There are still many people with Mayan heritage in Mexico today. When the Mayan people were in power 1,500 years ago, they built a lot of temples. These temples can be found in the old Mayan city called Chichén Itzá (CHI-chen EATS-uh). These temples are pyramids that are still beautiful even today. Many historians and archaeologists are working to make sure that Chichén Itzá is preserved for generations to come. People come from all over the world visit Chichén Itzá. Page 6 of 9

Cappadocia, Turkey Cappadocia, Turkey Cappadocia, Turkey Turkey is a country in the Middle East and Europe. It is actually in two continents! Turkey goes across Europe and Asia. People in Turkey speak Turkish. There is a region (area of land) in Turkey called Cappadocia. Cappadocia is about eight hours by bus from the city of Istanbul. More people live in Istanbul than in any other city in Turkey. Cappadocia has beautiful rock formations that go high into the sky. It looks like a strange alien land, but it is real! Thousands of years ago, people created homes in the rock formations. People still live there today. Cappadocia has a lot of tourists that come visit. Many of them take a hot air balloon ride over all of the pretty rocks. It is truly a place worth visiting! Page 7 of 9

Paris, France Paris, France Paris, France France is a country in Europe. People in France speak French. Tourists go to France sometimes to enjoy just the food. The food there is very delicious. French bread is very famous. French people invented the baguette, the long piece of bread that you buy at the supermarket. The cheese in Paris is also very delicious. People in the United States buy cheese that is made in France every day. They visit France to taste it there in person. The capital of France is Paris. Paris is known as the Romance City. A lot of people go to Paris to fall in love. It is a beautiful city. There is a river that runs through the city. The river is called the Seine (SAY-n). There are bridges that go over the Seine River that you can walk on. The most famous building in Paris is called the Eiffel Tower. It looks like a giant triangle. Millions of tourists go to the Eiffel Tower every year. They climb up the many staircases to the top of the tower. From the top of the tower, they can see a beautiful view of the city of Paris below. Los Angeles, United States Los Angeles, United States Beach in Los Angeles In the great state of California, there is a huge city close to Mexico. It is called Los Angeles. In Spanish, Ciudad de Los Angeles means City of Angels. People call Los Angeles "LA." It is home to ten million people. It is a very large city. Los Angeles borders the Pacific Ocean and has many beautiful beaches. It is famous for being sunny and warm all year round. Many people come to Los Angeles to enjoy its beautiful scenery and delicious food. Near the ocean is a park called Santa Monica Pier. There are lots of fun rides to go on and a giant ferris wheel! Sometimes, you can see seals come up on the beach. They are very friendly and are just taking a break from swimming in the ocean. Page 9 of 9
