Consider Minutes of the July 1, 2015 regular meeting A motion was made by Mrs. Carmen Torres to approve the minutes of the July 1, 2015 meeting. Mr. Agustin Loredo seconded the motion. The minutes were unanimously approved. Introduce Terry Raymond, New Building Maintenance Supervisor Mr. Scott Johnson introduced Mr. Terry Raymond as Larry Ferguson s replacement for the position of Building Maintenance Supervisor. Mr. Raymond has been a city employee for 19 years. Discuss and Consider 2014 2015 Parks and Department Annual Report Mr. Scott Johnson discussed the Annual Report and its completion. It will be presented to City Council August 13, 2015. 1

Discuss an Update on the Evergreen Point Golf Course Mr. Scott Johnson presented the new layout for the Evergreen Point Golf Course. Only a few holes will be kept from the original design. Nine more holes will be placed on the Phillips track. Irrigation needs to be renovated throughout the whole course. Golf Course is vital to future development of the south side of town. Each hole will have five tee boxes. The Golf Course will be completely shut down for at least a year to 18 months once City takes ownership. Club house has potential to be expanded. Funding for the project will be voted on in November. Announce the lineup for the 2015 Grito Fest Mr. Scott Johnson announced the lineup for the 2015 Grito Fest. The event will begin at 1 p.m. this year with Mariachi Los Gallitos, followed by Grupo Estrella, then La Original De Guanajuato. At 5:30 p.m. there will be an Accordion Competition and Grito Preliminaries. At 6 p.m., Los Relampaguitos will perform. The Jalapeno and Salsa Eating Contests and the Grito Championships will occur at 7:30 p.m. At 8 p.m., the headliner, Salomon Robles, will start his performance. Beacon Credit Union has donated $5,000 for the event. Recent and Upcoming Park Projects/Improvements Superintendent of Parks Dustin Schubert discussed the following projects with the board: a. Gateway Monument Flag poles are installed. CenterPoint is still finishing the electrical work. Once that is done, Parks crews will begin landscaping the Monument. b. Texas Avenue Town Square Construction has begun on the site. The site has been plotted, and piers for the fountain have been installed. Baytown Electric and Progressive Aquatics are on site right now. The slab for the fountain should be poured next week, and Parks crews are going to begin working on the seat wall. Phase 1 should be completed by late August early September. The entire project should be completed by November 15 th. c. Bowie Park Inclusive Playground Parks crews are installing a special needs inclusive playground at Bowie Park. The Rotary Club donated $10,000 to this project; they will be assisting in finishing the project on August 15 th at 9 a.m. The ribbon cutting will be on September 10 th. d. McElroy Park Playground Parks crews installed another 2-5 year-old playground at McElroy Park. It replaced an old, damaged unit. e. Cary Bayou Trail Bridge Parks crews are going to replace the granite trail on the Cary Bayou Trail Bridges. There have been issues with water build-up on the bridges after rainfall events. The granite will be replaced with a 50/50 rubber and rock mixture that allows water to run through it. The mixture is as durable as concrete, but provides a softer surface. Recent Programs and Preview Upcoming Events for the Wetlands Center and Baytown Nature Center Superintendent of Natural Resource Programs Tracey Prothro discussed the status of the following activities: a. Summer Science Camp Summer Science Camp is in week 9 of 10. b. Gator Tales Gator Tales is averaging about 12-20 children. Tyke Hike will begin once school starts. c. Wetlands Ecology Program / Liquid Science Program / Back to the Bay Program These programs will begin once school starts. 2

d. Nurture Nature Series Last week featured kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. There were 50 people in attendance. September 5 th will feature a dutch oven cooking workshop. e. Full Moon Hike Next Full Moon Hike will be on August 29 th. Recent Programs and Preview Upcoming Event Manager, Clifford Hatch discussed the following events and activities: a. July 3 rd & 4 th Celebration July 3 rd had its largest attendance ever for.38 Special. Clay Walker drew a large crowd, as well, on the 4 th. There was positive feedback from the vendors. Next year might feature some changes in the arts and crafts vendor layout to help alleviate congestion. The food booth vendor spots were full at 36. There were 46 arts and crafts booths. Light-up booths spots were increased and filled to capacity. b. Summer Camps Update Sonya partnered with Fast Forward Kids for the third year for Lego and Survival Camp. i. Lego Camp There were two sections of Lego Camp, 4-7 year-olds and 8-12 year-olds. The 4-7 camp was at capacity at 20 children, and the older section had 19 children. ii. Art Camp There were two sections of Art Camp, a half-day option and a full-day option. There were 18 children at the half-day camp and 16 at the full-day camp. iii. Survival Camp There were 18 children in the camp. This was a new camp, but very popular. c. Athletics Update i. Adult Leagues Softball season ended on July 23 rd. There were 40 teams registered, with 8 open team spots remaining. The Industrial League was brought back and was successful. Men s soccer is full once again. In September, there will be the addition of Coed and al Soccer Leagues to help alleviate the waitlist for soccer. ii. Youth Summer Track Track has completed its season. The Regional Meet was on July 9 th in Texas City. 55 athletes attended this meet, and 21 qualified for State. The State Meet was held in College Station on July 30 th. Two athletes advanced to finals in three events, where they placed 4 th, 6 th, and 6 th. Discuss/Review Aquatics Aquatic Manager, Mike Flinn discussed the following with the Board: a. Update on 2015 Summer Season for Pirate s Bay Waterpark and Calypso Cove Attendance is up by 12,000 and revenue is up by $400,000 for Pirate s Bay. Attendance is up by 1,300 and revenue is up by $6,000 for Calypso Cove. Combined attendance might break 200,000 by the end of the season. b. Annual Pirates Bay Flowrider Competition The Competition will be held Sunday, August 9 th at 8 p.m. Consider Board Members Suggestions for Items for Next Month s Agenda. Mr. Wayne Gray told members to call Mr. Scott Johnson anytime if needed. Director s Report Mr. Scott Johnson discussed the following with the board members: 3
