Dear Participants, Utrecht University The organizers of the Utrecht Common Session Autumn 2013 are really happy to give you a warm welcome! We hope you are as excited as we are to see what these three days of conferences are ready to offer. The activities will begin on the evening of Tuesday 29 th at 21.00. A short warm welcome is planned for the people who will already be in Utrecht in order to create the right atmosphere of companionship, collaboration and to meet new and old friends. 1) The real beginning of the Commons Session is on Wednesday 30 th October at 10.00 for the first plenary session at UCK Marnixzaal. Nonetheless due to logistical needs we invite you to arrive between 9.30 and 10.00 in order to give us the opportunity to register the participants, give you a small present, and ask you to book your seat for the farewell dinner, which will be held on Friday 1 st November at 18.30 in ele Tapas Spanish Restaurant. On Wednesday 30 th the conferences will finish around 18.00-18.30. 2) The second day, Thursday 31 st October, the activities will start at 10.30 with the third plenary session, which will take place at UCK Marnixzaal. We would like to underline that during the late afternoon you have the opportunity to actively participate in the debate on Green Criminology, which will take place at Drift (D13), from 17.00 to 19.00 (the end of the conferences for the day). 3) The third and last day, Friday 1 st November, the conferences will start at 10.00 with the fifth plenary session in UCK Marnixzaal. The three days of conferences will be reach its close starting from 15.00 until 17.00 with the last plenary session in Drift (D13). Afterwards, around 18.30, we are happy to invite you to the Farewell Dinner that hopefully you will have already booked the first day of the conferences in order to close the Common Sessions with a delicious dinner, good drinks, and fun.

Extra activities During the Common Session conferences, we thought it would be interesting for the participants to have something different to do, particularly after an intensive day let us say, from 20.30 to 22.30. Since the Netherlands is famous also for its Coffee Shops, we have decided to welcome you on a tour within a Coffee Shop! But what is the difference between the going on your own free time and joining us on this visit? Easy! First of all our guide, Dr Tim Boekhout van Solinge, is an expert in the market of drugs and will be very happy to explain to you many interesting points regarding the trade. Secondly, you will have the opportunity to meet the owner of the Coffee Shop himself who will be able to answer even more questions or curiosities you may have. Unfortunately, the shop is quite small so not more than 20-25 people can participate to this tour. But don t worry!!! For the others we have planned a visit around the city with a guide who will be happy to tell you about the history of the city of Utrecht and to answer your questions. Nonetheless, if you prefer something more quiet and relaxing why not take a boat tour around the beautiful canals and the old city centre within the heart of this medieval city? In this case obviously the tour is during the day and ends at 17.00. More info at: http://www.visit-utrecht.com/en/content/canal-cruises. Farewell Dinner Friday 1 st November 18.30 As mentioned in the Common Session Welcome, we have planned the Farewell Dinner at ele Tapas Spanish Restaurant: ele means the power of the soul. This place is a little piece of Spain under the Dom. The authentic tapas are made by Jesus Avelino Guardiola Román, and Fermin Miranda Caceres creates a cozy atmosphere with his guitar and powerful voice. You will be able to taste typical and delicious Spanish food (we say it because we ve tried it!) and then to have fun and dance. Price: 17,50 euro, buffet-style (drinks are excluded)

Please, remember that we need to know as soon as possible if you want to participate in order to book the room, so be quick on Wednesday morning and sign up for the dinner at the registration! What to sightsee in Utrecht? Utrecht is one of the beating hearts of the Netherlands, a city with an unparalleled vitality. A medieval city center small enough to explore on foot, yet still large enough to enjoy world class festivals, modern architecture, trendy shops and interesting museums for days on end. Utrecht has a wealth of culture and history and bustles with life, notably of 65,000 students. What else? An extensive number of cultural events. Friendly outdoor cafés and restaurants. Hospitable hotels Utrecht has it all. The Dom tower and cathedral are perhaps the most famous attractions of the city, but it has much more interesting churches and monuments that has to be seen: The Dom tower Domplein 9-10 3512 JC Utrecht The Dom tower is the symbol of the city of Utrecht. With his 465 steps and over 112 meters height it is the highest church tower in the Netherlands and with a breathtaking view over the city and the region Utrecht. Paushuize Kromme Nieuwegracht 49 3512 HE Utrecht Paushuize is the second oldest building in the historical heart of Utrecht. This palace was originally built for the only and one Dutch pope the Netherlands has ever known, Pope Adrian VI. In 1522 he was elected Pope, but he died a year later in Rome. He has never inhabited his home in Utrecht himself. In the 19th century the building was the residence of the Queen's Commissioner in the province of Utrecht. City Castle Oudaen

Oudegracht 99 3511 AE Utrecht City Castle Oudaen is a monumental building dating from 1296 that has its own grand café, à la carte restaurant and brewery. Sint Willibrord Church Minrebroederstraat 21 3512 GS Utrecht St. Willibrord Church is one of the most beautiful neo-gothic churches in the Netherlands and one of the hidden treasures of Utrecht. Winkel van Sinkel Oudegracht 158 3511 AZ Utrecht The cultural culinary department store located on the Oudegracht. It is a unique monumental building, with a continuously varying range of activities, music, dance, drink and dining options. Academiegebouw Domplein 29 3512 JE Utrecht This neo-renaissance Academy building dates from 1892 and is the ceremonial and representative heart of the Utrecht University Rietveld Schröderhouse Prinshendriklaan 50a 35XC Utrecht The masterpiece of Gerrit Rietveld, full of 'De Stijl', icon of the city of Utrecht and monument on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Where to Eat & Drink?

Obviously we know that after so many conferences you are hungry (starving, even?) so why not to try one of these great places during the lunch break or in the evening? In the following places you have the opportunity to eat for a cheap price since they have special student meals. They are typical student cafés, really nice also for drinks in the evening (or at night)! Havana Utrecht Oudkerkhof 29 35 GJ Utrecht +31 30 231 50 40 Café Rex Nobelstraat 207 3512 EM Utrecht +31 30 230 21 03 Heerenplein Lucasbolwek 1 3512 EG Utrecht +31 30 231 75 71 Café De Beurs Neude 37-39 3512 AG Utrecht +31 30 233 30 07 Studentencafé t Neutje Neude 30 3512 AG Utrecht +31 30 232 24 58 Café Lieve Lust Nobelstraat 8-10 3512 EN Utrecht + 31 30 238 2421 Stadscafé- Restaurant Broers Janskerkhof 9 3512 BK Utrecht + 31 30 234 34 06 ACU Voorstraat 71 3512 AK Utrecht + 31 30 231 45 90 Student meal: 6,50 euros Student meal: 7,00 euros Student meal: 8,00 euros Student meal: 9,00 euros Student meal: 9,00 euros Student meal: 9,50 euros Student meal: 10,00 euros Vegan Where to go out in Utrecht?

Utrecht has a long list of great pubs, bars, and cafes where you can go for a drink and/or dancing. The cafes listed in Where to Eat & Drink? are also really good places to go out after dinner. They are popular amongst students and therefore also on weekdays they are cosy and crowded. Many of the student bars and pubs are located on the Nobelstraat, t Neude, and Janskerkhof (please note that in some bars you need to show a student card to get in). Some other options are: Kafee Belgie Oudegracht 196 Café Flater Oudegracht 140 t Gras van de Buren Lange Jansstraat 16 Café de Kneus Nobelstraat 303 Café de Kostenkoper Loeffe Berchmakerstraat 4 Irish Pub Mick O Connells Jansdam 3 Café Olivier Achter Clarenburg 8 Café Orloff Donkeregaard 8 Café van Velsen Mariaplaats 8 De Voortuin Voorstraat 4 Bar Walden Domplein 18 Café de Zaak Korte Minrebroedersstraat 9 There are no doubts that the local Utrecht Master s students and staff members will be very happy to make suggestions, help you out, and join you in other places where you can have fun and dance after dinner!
