She has lectured in History education at Sydney, Macquarie and Western Sydney Universities and has authored/co-authored over a dozen books on History. Above: The Plaka is the pedestrianised dining and shopping district of Athens. I found the tour to be educationally beneficial and provided a wealth of resources and information for me to synthesise and develop for my teaching. Jen was great at engaging and encouraging teachers - 2017 Tour Participant Please note this itinerary is subject to change dependent on local conditions, weather, opening hours, availability of experts, availability of access, etc. Included meals are indicated: breakfast (B) and dinner (D). Above: Our group of teachers on the January 2017 PD tour visiting the Acropolis. Below: The ancient Agora of Athens contains the Odeion of Agrippa. Arrive Athens and make your own way to the hotel. Meet your tour manager and group in the hotel lobby at 5pm for a welcome drink and an orientation walk of the area. Dinner will be included at a local restaurant. Overnight Athens (D) This morning, Dr Lawless will present an introductory talk in the hotel before we embark on a sightseeing tour of the city with a local guide and private coach. We will then visit the Agora; the focal point of community and business life in ancient Athens. Continuing onto the Acropolis that towers over the city, you will view key buildings. This remarkable site encapsulates both the beauty and achievements of ancient Greece. The National Archaeological Museum of Greece has an incomparable collection of Mycenaean and Classical period art and artifacts. Finish the day exploring these finds. Overnight Athens (B) 7

Today we visit the New Acropolis Museum which houses artifacts spanning thousands of years and provides insights into Athenian society. You will have the opportunity to analyse and discuss the archaeological sources on display. The afternoon and evening are at leisure to relax or spend more time immersed in the ancient monuments and culture of Athens. Overnight Athens (B) Travel by private coach to the Corinth Canal and onto our hotel in the seaside town of Nafplio. An orientation walk of the area will precede our visit to the local Archaeological Museum. Dinner is included in a local restaurant. Overnight Nafplio (B, D) Above: Fragments of the Parthenon frieze, depicting the Great Panathenaia procession, are displayed in the New Acropolis Museum. Our private coach takes us to the ancient site of Mycenae: the seat of Agamemnon and the leader of the Greek coalition at Troy. While much ruined, and almost blending back into the rocky hills, the remains of this ancient powerhouse are in a spectacular location and ringed by well-preserved Cyclopean walls. We will also visit the adjacent Archaeological Museum to view a variety of objects unearthed in the vicinity, providing a context to the excavations of the site. We will then continue to the small Mycenaean site of Tiryns. Made famous by Homer for their strength, the walls of Tiryns still impress as does the entrance ramp and gate house. Our final stop will be the impressive 4 th -Century BC theatre of Epidaurus, still in use today for performances. Overnight Nafplio (B) Above: The famous Lion Gate, the main entrance to the Bronze Age citadel of Mycenae. Below: Nafplio has a stunning location on the Argolic Gulf. 8

After a morning lecture, we travel to what remains of the once mighty ancient city of Sparta. There is not much physical evidence to remind us of the ancient political and military power of this city. However, we will visit at the sites of the Agora and Artemis Orthia to discuss the role of this city in ancient Greek events. This evening there will be an included dinner in a local restaurant. Overnight Sparta (B, D) Above: The statue of King Leonidas in Sparta. Before departing Sparta, we will tour the small yet fascinating local Archaeological Museum which houses finds from the Mycenean to the Roman period. We will arrive in Olympia in time for lunch before visiting the ancient site and museum. Overnight Olympia (B) Below: Artifacts housed in the Delphi Museum include evidence of warfare. The tour continues to Delphi, located on Mount Parnassus back on the mainland. Here, we will tour the extensive mountainside archaeological complex, the site of the legendary oracle. We will also visit the Archaeological Museum which displays artifacts found among the ruins. Enjoy dinner as a group in a local restaurant this evening. Overnight Delphi (B, D) Below: The tomb of the Athenian hoplites in Marathon. Dr Lawless will deliver a lecture as we travel by coach to Thermopylae. The topography of the land has changed greatly since the monumental battle between the Persians and the Spartans with the narrow coastal passage replaced by a highway. However, you can still get a sense of how events unfolded. You will be able to view the monument to Leonidas and visit the nearby Archaeological Museum. We then continue onto Marathon, the site of the famous battle. We will arrive at Athens Airport in time for an evening flight to the Cretan city of Heraklion. Overnight Heraklion (B) 9

Located a short drive from Heraklion is the remarkable site of the Minoan Palace of Knossos. We will explore the site with a local guide to learn more about the complex, its excavations, its preservation and the Greek myths that originated here. In the afternoon, we will visit the Archaeological Museum in the city centre. We will have the opportunity to view its extensive collection of Minoan antiquities and discuss what they can tell us about life in this ancient civilisation. Overnight Heraklion (B) Above: The Phaistos Disk can be viewed at the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion. Your final day can be spent at leisure in Heraklion, or you may wish to visit some of the nearby towns or beaches. Buses around the island are easy to use and your tour manager can assist in planning your day. Alternatively, we can arrange an optional day tour to continue our investigation into Minoan society. We would travel by private coach to Phaistos (approximately 90 minutes driving time). Here we visit the excavations of another Bronze Age palace, where the Phaistos Disc was discovered. We will have time for lunch and perhaps a swim at the nearby beach town of Matala. Then, we will visit the archaeological site of Agia Triada. At the site, we will be able to see the remains of the Minoan town, Royal Villa and tombs. The cost of this day trip would be approximately $60 per person and subject to the number of interested participants. This evening, we will enjoy a farewell dinner together in a local restaurant. Overnight Heraklion (B, D) Below: The optional day trip will include a stop at the beach town of Matala. Below: The hub of Heraklion centres around the Venetian lion fountain with plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars to enjoy. The group will transfer to the airport for a morning flight back to Athens where the tour will conclude. (B) Utterly satisfied! 2017 PD Tour Participant 10

Above: The lobby of the Hotel Acropolis Select, Athens. Below: There are plenty of al fresco dining options to enjoy. All the hotels selected by Academy Travel offer good facilities, secure locations and free wi-fi (however some may only offer access in the public areas of the building). All rooms are twin-share with private bathrooms. Single rooms may also be available on request for an additional supplement. The hotels will generally be of a 3-4 star quality in central locations, with access to public transport, restaurants and important sites. The hotels will be advised in your tour documentation provided approximately 6 weeks prior to departure. Examples of hotels we use in Greece include: Athens: Hotel Acropolis Select Nafplio: Hotel Victoria Sparta: Lakonia Hotel Breakfast is included each day and is usually a continental buffet provided within the hotel. There are 5 included group dinners in the program. Included dinners are usually a set 3-course group menu at a local restaurant with a soft drink/beer/wine included. The restaurants are selected for their location and atmosphere. Where possible, we will try to incorporate the local specialties into the set menus. Lunches are generally arranged independently. Please advise us of any special dietary requirements on your booking form so we can best accommodate them. Above and below: Take the opportunity to sample the delicious local cuisine. 12

We are travelling in autumn. Expect warm to mild weather throughout the trip, with little chance of rain. Daytime average temperatures are usually around 20 degrees. A suggested packing list will be provided in your travel documents prior to departure. A moderate level of physical fitness will be required in order to participate in the tour and enjoy everything that the itinerary has to offer. Specifically you should be able to do the following: Keep up with the group at all times Walk unassisted for up to three to four hours with only short breaks Walk up and down slopes Negotiate steps and slopes on archaeological sites, which are often uneven and unstable Get on and off coaches/public transport unassisted Move around airports with luggage unassisted (porterage not included) If you are concerned about your ability to meet the requirements of the trip we urge you to contact us for further information and to consult your medical practitioner for an honest assessment. The tour leaders may instruct you to take time out of the tour program if they consider that you will slow the group down or are at risk of injury or illness. Above: Autumn is a lovely time of year to travel to Greece with sunny days expected. Above and below: Our tours involve walking each day, including across archaeological sites and through museums. A wonderful tour in every aspect with the attention to customer needs and providing a brilliant educational and cultural experience that I have come to know as the hallmark of Academy Travel. 2014 PD Tour Participant 13

Whilst we endeavour to deliver the entire program as planned, we may need to alter aspects of the itinerary for various reasons beyond our control. The itinerary may change in the following circumstances: Availability of flights or bookings; Availability of academic experts; Safety or security concerns in certain areas, cities or countries; A change in DFAT travel advisories; or Weather conditions or other unforeseen interruptions. To secure your place on the tour, please complete the following booking form and forward all relevant documents to Academy Travel. We require a copy of the photo page of your passport, even if it will require renewal before the tour. We will also require a $500.00 per person deposit, which is non-refundable. We will then send to you a welcome pack with further details on the tour. Final payment is due 70 days prior to departure. If you would like us to assist with further travel arrangements, please indicate this on the form, or contact us directly to discuss your requirements. NSW Teachers: If you would like to be accredited for the PD hours through NESA, you will need to provide to us your NESA number. This will be automatically accredited to you at the conclusion of the tour. Above: Inside the Tomb of Agamemnon, also referred to as the Treasury of Atreus. Below: The man-made marvel of the Corinth Canal. Below: The ancient stadium of Olympia. For further information, please contact Academy Travel on 9235 0134 or 1800 639 699 (outside Sydney) or email schools@academytravel.com.au. The academic experts were superb they all made every effort to gauge the needs of the group. Their knowledge and information provided was extensive. Each of them willingly engaged in conversation and questions, and prepared to add interesting details and insights. - 2014 program participant 14
