Founded in 1703 on the bank of Lake Onego Petrozavodsk played an important role in defending the borders of the Russian Empire. The name of the city can be translated as that factory of Peter the Great that was famous for its cannons and iron casting. The Petrozavodsk factory was well-known not only for producing high quality weapons but also for exquisite iron cast fences. Some works still decorate parks and bridges of St. Petersburg. During WWII Petrozavodsk was heavily damaged. That's why the major part of the today's city center was erected soon after the war in a unified architectural style which is known as Socialist Classicism. Still some buildings of the 18th century survived the war.
