The journey begins in Cairo, home to the great Pyramids of Giza, the last of the great wonders of antiquity. You ll have an opportunity to visit the famous pyramids at both Giza and Saqqara, as well as the treasures of the city s Museum, which include the remarkable horde of artefacts taken from the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. Travelling by train, you then head along the timeless landscapes of the Nile Valley to Aswan, where you can visit the beautiful temple of Isis on the island of Philae and take to the Nile in a traditional felucca sailboat before driving to Luxor, site of the ancient capital of Thebes. Here you will have a chance to explore the spectacular remains of Karnak and Luxor Temples and the vast mortuary temples of the Valley of the Kings, some of the greatest creations of the Pharaohs of the Eighteenth Dynasty. ITINERARY DAY 1: CAIRO Arrive in Cairo and transfer to your hotel. DAY 2: CAIRO Today visit the Pyramids of Giza and the enigmatic Sphinx, followed by a tour of the Egyptian Museum - home to an incredible collection including the treasures of Tutankhamun. Finish your tour with a visit to the colourful and bustling Khan-el- Khalili bazaar. (B) DAY 3: CAIRO - ASWAN Today you may like to head out of Cairo to Saqqara where you will find pyramids older than those at Giza, you could alternatively visit central Cairo with its citadel and Coptic Churches. In the evening transfer to the station for your overnight train to Aswan in a private compartment. (B,D) DAY 4: ASWAN On arrival in to Aswan head to your hotel for breakfast. After, visit the High Dam and the beautiful Philae Temple, located on an island. On the way back stop off at the extraordinary 200 tonne 'Unfinished Obelisk'. The afternoon is free for you to relax or explore the town. DAY 5: ASWAN Spend time exploring the cataracts; take a trip in a felucca sailboat, perhaps stopping off at the Botanical Gardens or Elephantine Island. You may also like to take a short flight to Abu Simbel to visit the great rock cut temples of Ramses II (optional tour). (B) DAY 6: ASWAN - LUXOR Drive north to Luxor making stops at the temples of Kom Ombo, an interesting temple dedicated on one side to Sobek the crocodile god and the other to Haroeris, an older Horus and further north Edfu, the Temple of Horus, second in size only to Karnak and the best preserved in the country. DAY 7: LUXOR An early start and over to the West Bank Necropolis. Located here are the unrivalled Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, Queen Hapshetsut's Temple and many other sites. Spend the whole day here or return to the town and wander the bazaar or visit Luxor Museum. (B) DAY 8: LUXOR This morning you will visit the magnificent Temple of Amun at Karnak. Dedicated to the Sun God Amun-Ra, it is the largest temple complex in Luxor and has an incredible Hall of Columns. Today you also visit Luxor Temple. (B) DAY 9: LUXOR Transfer to the airport for your return flight. (B)
