Antique Engine Club Inc. Ruth Lazor, editor Volume 31 Issue 3 March 2015 IT S RAFFLE TIME!! It s that time of year again. Time to think about getting those raffle tickets and getting them sold. Enclosed in this newsletter are 8 tickets for you to sell. They are 6 for $5 or $1 for a single tickets. More tickets are available from any officer or at meetings. First prize this year is a 1952 Ford 8N that is being fully restored by club members. A local tractor it lived less than 1 mile from our club grounds. This is the tractor before it started its journey to being restored. It should be at the Spring Gas-Up for you to inspect. The fellows have worked diligently to bring it back to it s original beauty. Second prize is an 2 1/2 h.p Economy model E hit and miss engine. This engine is wearing its original red paint although a little faded and comes with a Webster magneto and clutch pulley and sits on the original skids. If you attended the 2014 Covered Bridge Festival, it was there producing the pops that denotes a hit and miss engine. These pictures show the engine in its original, untouched condition. This would be a great addition to anyone s collection. 12 1

WHAT IN THE WORLD??? You know our members always come up with some interesting items. This one was discovered in charter member George Nicholas shop. His son, Charlie, invited several of our members to see if there was anything there we wanted. This item was brought home. It s very interesting, especially with the story Charlie gave them. Keep looking elsewhere in this newsletter to find out the identity and use for this item. What is a hit and miss engine? There are numerous hit and miss engines displayed at our shows. After all, we are the Ashtabula County Antique Engine Club and they were the engines displayed at our first shows. We welcome and embrace all engines (large or small, tractor, car, truck, etc) but hit-nmiss engines are the ones that got this whole club started. A hit-and-miss engine is a four stroke internal combustion engine that started in the late 19th century. Many companies produced them from the 1890s through the 1940s. The name is derived from the type of speed control used on these engines. The sound made at the time the engine is running without a load is POP whoosh whoosh whoosh whoosh POP as the engine fires then coasts until it slows down and needs to fire again to return to speed. They were used to power water pumps, saws for cutting wood, generators for electricity, and even helped the farm wife with her washing machine. The farmer was able to accomplish much more with their help. 2 OFFICERS AND COMMITTEES FOR 2015 The following officers and committee were elected at our December 2014 meeting: President Henry Lipps 330-876-1482 1st Vice President Wayne Johnson 330-889-3020 2nd Vice President Gary Goodge 440-285-2419 Secretary Marilyn Johnson 330-889-3020 Assistant Secretary Janet Lipps 440-576-5418 Treasurer Linda Lipps 330-876-1482 Assistant Treasurer Kathy Logan 330-876-7932 Membership Secretary Ruth Lazor 440-293-7392 Trustees - Walter Trumbull (2015) 330-638-7732 Ed Wharton (2016) 440-593-2327 Gary Alfonsi (2017) 330-876-5943 Steering Committee - Art Coon (2015) 440-293-7342 Dave Cover (2015) 330-637-2006 Dave Hodge (2016) 440-275-1074 Laverne Goodge (2016) 440-563-3704 Dave Hill ( 2016) (member-at-large) 724-932-5020 Land Committee - Larry Lipps (2015) 440-576-5418 Ladi Kubichek (2015) 440-224-1930 Gary Goodge (2016) 440-285-2419 Herb Barber (2016) 330-772-3925 Francis Gordon (2017) 440-293-6019 Julius Pal (2017) 440-224-1375 If you have a change of address or phone number, please contact the Membership Secretary so records can be updated. 11

ANOTHER PROJECT? There is a 40 ton, Fairbanks Morse, 10 cylinder, 1,600 H.P. 2 cycle, 720 RPM, double crank, 8 1/8 stroke, model 38D81/8 engine, that has run less than 6,000 hours in Marblehead, MA. It is 17 long, 9 high and 6 wide. This engine was built in 1938. The engine, owned by the local electric utility, is free but will cost $10,000-$12,000 to get it loaded on a truck and to the railroad for transporting it, plus $5,000 for railroad transportation to the ACAEC siding in Wayne. The cost of truck only delivery is also being checked. We are looking for a crew to dismantle it, like we did in Georgia, and dollar pledges for the job. This will be discussed at the April 4th meeting, 7:30 p.m. at the Wayne Town Hall. See you all there, Sparkie (Ladi) 10 3

IN MEMORIAM... What in the World? Have you figured out what our mystery item is? This item was used as a wedge for splitting firewood. When the wedge was buried in the wood, black powder was poured into the hole in the wedge and lit. That usually made short work of that chunk of wood. This sounds like it might be more fun than work, until someone got hit with a chunk of wood or the wedge! HMMM! Broken pencils are pretty much pointless. 4 Submitted by Wayne Johnson Did you hear about the cross-eyed teacher who lost her job because she couldn t control her pupils? The Golden Role has added three more members with the passing of Life Members Vine Lipps and Joe Vogt, member Greg Smith and special friend of the club, Dr. Richard Waters. Vine Lipps name was added on February 1, 2015 in Ashtabula, OH at the age of 95. She was the mother of members Larry & Janet Lipps and Bart and Pam Lipps, and Jim and Linda Hall. Born in Cherry Valley, she lived her entire life in Ashtabula County. A school teacher for 38 years, she had many interests as a Sunday School teacher, 4-H advisor and in many other organizations. Many will remember her being in the kitchen at the club grounds as the official pie cutter for many years. Joe Vogt entered the role on February 9, 2015 at the age of 89 in Sandusky, OH. He had been a very active member for many years. A veteran of WWII, he served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps and worked many years as a flight instructor. He enjoyed working on his tree farm and many of the trees on our grounds were donated by him. He is survived by his daughter Karen, sons, Jerry, Mike, an ACAEC member, and Jay. Greg Smith, 66, joined the others on February 10, 2015. After high school, he also joined the military. He worked for Nickel Plate Railroad then went on to General Electric Locomotive Plant for 30 years. He spent many hours in the club kitchen doing whatever was needed. His pleasant personality will be sorely missed. Dr. Richard Waters, 81, will be remembered for his quiet personality and winning smile even when you were in his dentist chair. He practiced in Jefferson for 42 years. He and his wife Norma donated his father s antique dental equipment to the club and it is displayed in the Freight Depot. The members of the Ashtabula County Antique Engine Club extent their sincere sympathies to the families of all these people. They will all be missed. 9
