Course Description The Entrepreneur & Nursing Exchange program is packed full of People-to-People exchange activities and combines the opportunity to learn and experience Cuba s Art, Music, Dance, History, while focusing on entrepreneurship and nursing in Cuba. This new program presents a unique learning experience in each area. The nursing students will have the opportunity to meet local Cuban physicians and nurses, visit nursing facilities, and learn about Cuba s healthcare system. The explosive changes in Cuba and the private business sectors has brought both opportunities and challenges to new and seasoned entrepreneurs. Entrepreneur students will get a first hand look at Cuba and meet local business owners, discuss challenges, marketing, financial options, and visit local Cuban facilities. Everyone will get a chance to see and learn about the best part of Cuba, it s people. Course Learning Objectives This program offers the following; Entrepreneurship and Nursing in Cuba: History, Challenges, and the impact of the US Embargo on Cuba s people. A tour of Old Havana, a UNESCO World Heritage, where you will learn about special business programs and visit private shops. Cuba s business school, business practices, Nursing, and Cuban hospitals/clinics. Marketing and growth strategies, advertisement, product demand, Cuba laws, and the challenges with being an entrepreneur in Cuba. Discussion on Cuba s healthcare system and with Cuban nurses & physicians. Opportunity for students and professionals to exchange ideas and Compare and Contrast cultural perspectives with current best practices in their own professional setting. Visit University of Havana & Professors Visit CIMEQ and Nurses Visit local Cuban business and learn from local business owners Reflect on experiences while in Cuba, business policies and operations, and the Cuban healthcare system. Intended Audience The conference is designed for all professionals who work in the business sector, professors, business student, nursing students, and Art/Music/Dance students from universities. This program can be offered to any student or member of the university. Credits The Shenandoah University is accredited by the Virginia State Educational board to provide credits if needed. Registration Registration is done using the standard Shenandoah University Global Experiential Learning (GEL) process. The exchange program includes, hotel, transportation, excursions and meals as indicated in itinerary, Cuban guides, course material, refreshments during professional visits, airfare, Cuban visa, all required documentation for legal travel, and farewell dinner. Although it s not Shenandoah University policy to limit the number of participants or guest, but due to the popular response of past conferences and the fact that Cuba is in particular a very popular destination with limited quality accommodation, it may be necessary to close registration early; therefore, early registration is advised. PROGRAM SCHEDULE Thursday, January 3 HAVANA Shenandoah University staff members and students will arrive in Havana, Cuba on the 3 rd of January, 2019 at Jose Marti International airport. USA-CUBA Tours representative will meet everyone at the airport to help with transportation. We ll load the luggage into the air-conditioned bus for a twenty-minute transfer to Melia Cohiba Hotel. As we make our way to the hotel, you will get the chance to see Cuba and see some of the historical buildings and sites that we will be visiting. 6:59am 12:00pm Airfare from Washington Dulles airport to Jose Marti airport 1:30 2:00pm - Arrive at Melia Cohiba hotel for check-in Exchange currency and relax Relax and freshen up and explore on your own before dinner Transfer to restaurant 7:30 9:30pm Welcome dinner and cocktails at New George s Cuban Restaurant Transfer back to hotel Night is open for you to enjoy (Jazz Café, Salsa Club 1830 is available (not included))

Friday, January 4 HAVANA 8:15am Registration Mandatory Sign In 8:30am Transfer to University of Havana to meet professors in the school of business (entrepreneurs) 8:30am Transfer to CIMEQ for Nursing lecture (CIMEQ dress code NO SHORTS/T-SHIRTS) 9:00am Exchange Program lectures begin Nursing students will meet with CIMEQ physicians & nurses to discuss Cuba s healthcare system and visit the CIMEQ Medical Surgical Research Center in Havana. Business students will meet University professors to discuss entrepreneur ideas, business practices in Cuba, the private business sectors, and tour the University of Havana. 12:00pm Lunch will be served at a private Cuban restaurant owned by one of the graduates. Here the students will meet and hear from the owners on the difficulties they experienced and the great things they learned by opening a new business. This is a great experience to exchange ideas between American and Cuban students/owners, while enjoying an authentic Cuban meal. 2:00pm, Afternoon Humanitarian Tours of Old Havana. Take a walking tour around the historic center of Old Havana, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visit Plaza de San Francisco de Asis and the 16th-century Convento de San Francisco de Asis, one of the finest buildings from the colonial period. The basilica and the monastery of San Francisco de Asis (Saint Francis of Assisi) were built in Havana at the end of sixteenth century (1580 91) as the home of the Franciscan community, and were altered in the Baroque style in 1730. The church was used for worship by the English during the years they ruled Havana. When it returned to Spanish rule, they chose not to use it as a church. It is now used for concerts. See the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales at Plaza de Armas, where the city originated. Built in 1776, this stately palace remains as a testament to Cuba s importance as Spain s principal port of the Americas during the 18th century. Visit the famous El Floridita Bar, birthplace of the Daiquiri cocktail and one of Hemingway s favorite Havana bars. Since that time El Floridita has been frequented by distinguished visitors to Havana, ranging from artists to official guests of the government. 4:00pm Transfer back to hotel 7:00pm 8:3opm - Dinner is on your own tonight (we can help with recommendation, reservations, and transportation) 9:00pm After dinner we ll meet in the lobby of the hotel and head to the Buena Vista Social Club Transfer back to hotel at 10:45pm

Saturday, January 5 HAVANA 9:00am Registration Mandatory Sign In Morning and Afternoon Lectures at University of Havana and tours to local Cuban businesses Entrepreneurs: The lectures overview will be held at the University of Havana. Then we ll explore Cuba s business sectors by visiting several private business and hearing about each business from the owners. We ll discuss topics such as start-up procedures, licensing, financing (banks or private monies), growth, sales, and challenges. Business students will visit the following business sector Private business - Automobile sector - Housing sector Nursing: The lectures overview is to learn more about Cuba s nursing facilities and how Cuban nurses manage and treat their patients under a community healthcare system. Students will get an opportunity to hear from practicing nurses on the challenges, issues, and hardships they have to overcome everyday, when we visit local Cuban clinics. Nursing students will visit the following hospital or clinic Government controlled - Las Praderas Clinic 12:30pm Business students will have lunch at a private Cuban restaurant owned by one of the graduates from the business school. Here each student and guest will hear from the owners on the difficulties they experienced and the great things they learned by opening a new business. 12:30pm Nursing students will have lunch in a private Cuban restaurant in Old Havana where everyone can relax, unwind, and take in some of Cuba s vibrant cultural and music while enjoying a great meal. 2:30pm Transfer back to hotel Relax and freshen up 6:45pm - 8:30pm - Dinner at DeCameron, a nice private Cuban restaurant 8:45pm After dinner, enjoy a drive down the Malecon and through Havana in an American Classic convertible car as we make our way to the famous Tropicana show. The Tropicana show has a dress code NO SHORTS or T-SHIRTS (open toed shoes or sandals are permitted) 12:00am - Transfer back to hotel

Sunday, January 6 HAVANA 9:00am Registration Mandatory Sign In Morning and Afternoon Lectures and tours to local Cuban businesses The conference lectures overview is to explore Cuba s business sectors by visiting several private business and hearing about each business from the owners. We ll discuss topics such as start-up procedures, licensing, financing (banks or private monies), growth, sales, and challenges. Business students will visit the following business sector Private business - Food and Beverage sector - Textile sector - Service sector (repairs, cleaning, massage) Nursing: The lectures overview is to learn more about Cuba s nursing facilities and how Cuban nurses manage and treat their patients under a community healthcare system. Students will get an opportunity to hear from practicing nurses on the challenges, issues, and hardships they have to overcome everyday. Nursing students will visit the following hospital or clinic Government controlled - Hermanos Amejeiras Hospital 12:30pm - Lunch will be served at a private Cuban restaurant owned by one of the graduates from the business school. Here all students and guests will hear from the owners on the hardships and difficulties they experienced when opening a their business. Everyone will enjoy an authentic Cuban meal while soaking up the Cuban music and energy. 2:30pm Transfer back to hotel 4:30pm 5:30pm Cigar demonstration and rum tasting 7:00pm - 9:00pm Farewell dinner at El Cocinero a nice private Cuban restaurant where we ll dine on the roof-top, just across the street from the Fabrica De Arte Cubano (FAC) 9:15pm - Transfer back to hotel Night is open (entertainment is available, such as Salsa dancing, Jazz club)

Monday, January 7 HAVANA DEPART 7:00am Breakfast in hotel (included) Check-out of hotel (each guest must return room keys at the front desk and wait for them to check the room) Last minute shopping can be done around the hotel prior to transfer to airport 10:00am Transfer to Jose Marti Airport for your 1:00pm departure to Washington Dulles airport Process through Cuban Immigrations & Custom Back home missing Cuba already
