Payphones here accept coins and calling cards. Japan is quickly catching up with the world and the number of places with Free Wi-Fi is rapidly increasing. If you ever need Wi-Fi on the go, it s helpful to remember that every 7-11 convenience store in the country has Free Wi-Fi! Public payphone Electricity Japanese outlets are 120V of electricity and feature the same type of plugs as 2 pronged American plugs (Type A). FREE Wi-Fi Currency A Few Guidelines Japan uses the Yen as its currency, and both coins and bills are equally used. Coins come in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500, and with bills being 1,000, 2,000 (although extremely rare!), 5,000 and 10,000. You can exchange foreign currencies at the airport or your hotel, but just remember to be careful when spending your coins! The 500 is equal to almost US $5, and you can end up spending a lot of money before you know what happened! Most shops automatically add the 8% sales tax to prices, so you won t have to do much counting.
