Introduction Contents Dominik Wiener-Silva, Vice President Marketing & Sales, Lufthansa Technik Philippines Base maintenance 4 News & Updates LTP performs 1st ever cabin reconfiguration on an A380 Dear readers, Touch of IndiGo 6 largest LCC sends 7 India s A320s to LTP for C-checks News & Updates Lufthansa Technik Malta receives engineering support Practicing and preaching LEAN 8 8 New PAL aircraft to undergo maintenance at LTP JAL renews contract with LTP LTP continues to give back Global transport tender awarded to LTLS 9 9 10 10 Just like that, we are in the middle of the year. Scoring several big firsts is an appropriate end to an eventful first half of 2012. It is noteworthy that Lufthansa Technik Philippines performed the very first A380 cabin reconfiguration in the world (page 4). Our expertise came to the fore when we were also tasked to undertake our first A380 wing-rib modification. Both firsts were done with flying colors as there was no significant impact on the turnaround time. These huge firsts were also made possible because of our strong collaboration with Qantas Airways, Airbus and Lufthansa Technik AG. We are also pleased to welcome the no. 1 LCC in India to LTP (page 7). Having IndiGo on board is such an honor for us. Not only is it the largest LCC in India but it is the fastest growing LCC worldwide. Speaking of growth, Philippine Airlines is all set in expanding its fleet. Two brand new Airbus A320s and one B777 were welcomed to the fleet with a ceremonial blessing (page 9). LTP employees are again demonstrating their expertise through manpower deployment. Two engineers are currently in Lufthansa Technik Malta to lend engineering support (page 8). LTP has been supporting LTM since the buildup of its A330/A340 overhaul facility in 2008. Since our adoption of LEAN in the organization, we have truly come a long way. Not only are we faithfully practicing it but we are also preaching it. Our LEAN specialists were recently assigned overseas to conduct seminars on LEAN (page 8). Our team in Marketing and Sales recently evolved in response to the current needs of our customers. With the reorganization, we hope that we will be able to improve further our efficiency and responsiveness (page 11). Our editorial team has made some innovations in this issue that we hope will give you more information about the company and how we may be able to help your business grow more. We hope that you will enjoy this issue as much as we have enjoyed preparing it. Lufthansa Technik Philippines Founded in the year 2000 as a joint venture of Lufthansa Technik AG and Philippine aviation service provider MacroAsia Corporation, Lufthansa Technik Philippines offers a wide range of aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services to customers worldwide. The company focuses on base maintenance checks for the A319/A320, A330/A340 types of aircraft. It has 11 hangar bays and workshops which have been designed according to the latest industry standards in order to support aircraft maintenance, major modifications, cabin reconfigurations, engine maintenance and painting for the A319/A320, A330/A340, A380 and B747400 and B777 aircraft. LTP s broad experience in A330/ A340 base maintenance checks has earned the trust of more than thirty customers worldwide. It is also rendering line maintenance to more than twenty domestic and international carriers. Through a partnership with Lufthansa Technical Training Philippines (LTTP), LTP mechanics are certified through EASA Part 66-compliant courses. LTP holds repair station certificates from the FAA, EASA, CAAP and other airworthiness authorities. Base maintenance Base maintenance LTP performs 1 st ever cabin reconfiguration on an A380 The Manila-based Lufthansa Technik facility chalks up major firsts testimonies to the company s world-class competence. Lufthansa Technik Philippines successfully completes the first ever cabin reconfiguration on an Airbus A380. Of the 75 A380 aircraft in service all over the world, this is the first aircraft to undergo cabin reconfiguration. For this first reconfiguration, licensed aircraft maintenance engineers and technical representatives from Qantas Airways were on-site to work hand in hand with Lufthansa Technik Philippines engineers and mechanics. Likewise, experts from Airbus and suppliers were onsite during the event. Significantly, while cabin reconfiguration was being performed on the A380, its wing-rib was also undergoing inspection and necessary repairs to temporarily fix wing cracks that were similarly found on several A380s. While this was the first time that a cabin reconfiguration had ever been done on an A380, it was also the first time that LTP performed a wing-rib repair. The expertise of LTP s structures team was a significant factor in the success of the wing-rib modification and in lessening its impact on the turnaround time of the cabin reconfiguration. The great collaboration of LTP with Qantas, Airbus and Lufthansa Technik AG forms part of the success of this cabin reconfiguration and wing-rib modification project. The reconfiguration and later on the decision to carry out wing-rib inspection and repair started exactly a year after the groundbreaking of Lufthansa Technik Philippines newest widebody aircraft. The construction of the hangar was one of the company s preparations for the technical support of the world s largest commercial aircraft. In parallel, Lufthansa Technik Philippines employees completed training programs, which consisted of A380-specific courses, in Lufthansa Technical Training facilities in Frankfurt and the Philippines, the on-site training center in Manila, and several months of on-the-job training performing A380 C-checks at Lufthansa Technik in Frankfurt. In these exposures, Filipino engineers and mechanics yet again benefited from the exchange of expertise Base maintenance capability Specialization: Airbus A319/A320, A330/A340 within the Lufthansa Technik Group. These preparations were necessary for LTP as it develops its latest capability base maintenance for the Airbus A380 aircraft, particularly C-checks. Qantas Airways will be sending 11 more A380s nose-to-tail to Lufthansa Technik LTP s base maintenance customers Philippines for cabin reconfiguration. The configuration of these A380s is 14P (First), 72J (Business), 32W (Premium economy) and 332Y (Economy). At the end of this campaign, all 12 Qantas A380s will be reconfigured to a new four-class configuration of 14P/64J/35W/371Y. Service spectrum includes: aircraft painting, cabin reconfiguration/retrofit programs, and lease return checks C-checks A319, A320, A321 A330, A340 A380 B747 IL-/D-checks A319, A320, A321 A330, A340 4

Touch of IndiGo Touch of IndiGo It has been almost five years since Lufthansa Technik Philippines catered to LCCs. During this course, LTP decided to dedicate manpower and a hangar exclusively for its LCC customers through its MRO Lite product. To date, LTP has performed C-checks, redelivery checks, landing gear replacements, aircraft painting and cabin modification for top LCC operators, majority of which utilize the A320 aircraft. Focus and experience in the aircraft type helped LTP to perform these services to its LCC customers successfully. LTP acknowledges that A320 aircraft has a big impact in its business. It is also because of this focus and expertise that customers continue to entrust their aircraft to LTP. Case in point is IndiGo, India s largest LCC, will fly its A320s to Manila for C4/6Y lease return checks starting this quarter. It is hoped that this nose-totail campaign will lead to more opportunities towards learning, process improvement and long-term partnership between the two companies. IndiGo is in good company as it joins market-leading LCC operators such as Cebu Pacific, AirAsia X and Jetstar in LTP s roster of customers. LTP welcomes a touch of IndiGo in its hangar. India s largest LCC sends A320s to Lufthansa Technik Philippines for C-checks IndiGo has recently signed an agreement with Lufthansa Technik Philippines for a series of C4 lease return checks for seven of its A320 aircraft. The first aircraft is scheduled for lease return check on June 2012. The remaining contracted A320s will follow until the end of the year 2012. Our partnership with LTP, one of the leading maintenance, repair and overhaul providers in Asia, will enable IndiGo to use LTP s proven competence, experience and expertise in on-time completion of lease return checks, said IndiGo officials. We are very pleased to welcome India s fastest growing airlines and largest low-cost operator to LTP this June. We are fully committed in providing our expert support to ensure timely lease return of IndiGo s A320 aircraft. We hope that this agreement is a start of a long-term partnership with one of India s leading airlines today, shares Dominik Wiener- Silva, vice president for Marketing and Sales of Lufthansa Technik Philippines. IndiGo is India s largest low-cost airline today. As of March 1, 2012, IndiGo operates a fleet of 51 new Airbus A320-200s serving 27 cities within India and five international cities namely Bangkok, Dubai, Kathmandu, Muscat and Singapore. Our partnership with LTP will enable IndiGo to use LTP s proven competence, experience and expertise in on-time completion of lease return checks. Scan the QR code to read articles related to MRO Lite MRO Lite LTP saw the expansion of A320 fleet in Asia as a viable opportunity to cater to the LCC market. In 2010, LTP formally created MRO Lite product to cater to its LCC customers. Developed a flat organization for better flexibility and efficiency. Its second hangar has been dedicated to its MRO Lite operation. The hangar is capable of housing three to four A320/A321. LEAN concepts are utilized to standardize aspects of maintenance events. Personnel assignment Lufthansa Technik Malta receives engineering support Line maintenance New PAL aircraft to undergo maintenance at Lufthansa Technik Philippines Two Lufthansa Technik Philippines engineers are performing engineering tasks related to systems and structures at Lufthansa Technik Malta (LTM). The engineers are on assignment to Lufthansa Technik s Mediterranean facility since February. After working at LTM for nearly four months now, the engineers received positive feedback from their colleagues in the Engineering and Planning Department, where they are assisting in technical tasks particularly in line with their expertise in structures and systems. We are very pleased with the performance of the LTP engineers. They were able to adapt easily to LTM s processes. They are providing the assistance that we require consistently, said Martin Finn, Head of Engineering and Planning at LTM. In addition, they were able to build a good Practicing and preaching LEAN Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) sent LEAN personnel to Kimberly-Clark Professional (KCP) Workshops to facilitate LEAN Basics Overview Seminar for its sales and marketing managers, as well as its customers. With the help of Lufthansa Technik Philippines sharing on LEAN, we now have a clearer understanding on how we can truly engage and partner-up with the aviation world, and propel the larger industry towards the achievement of its vision for the future. Ultimately, I see LEAN leading the way here, stated by Jonathan Cristobal, Market Segment manager for Aviation & Automotive, Kimberly-Clark Professional* Asia-Pacific. Truly, the growth of LTP in its LEAN journey during the past four years through thousands of small projects and hundreds of quantum leaps to improve processes and operations has not only gained recognition within the Lufthansa Technik LEAN network but in other industries as well. Philippine Airlines recently leased two brand new Airbus A320-200 aircraft and one Boeing 777-300ER as part of a fleet upgrade program. The three aircraft, which arrived in March, May, and June, were given ceremonial blessings at Lufthansa Technik Philippines.
