Properties of Distinction Once each month, King Solomon rode upon his splendid white eagle to the secret pleasure palace he had built for himself in the wilderness. As he rode upon the wings of the giant bird, the sun beat down on him so intensely that he thought he would die. Suddenly a flock of Hoopoes flew by, and seeing the king s distress, gathered together, wingtip to wingtip, so that they formed a sheltering canopy over the king. In gratitude for their kindness King Solomon summoned the King of the Hoopoes and said to him, ask me whatever you wish and I shall grant it to you. From then on all the Hoopoes wore crests of feathers upon their head and were able to live throughout the land in peace. Occupying an expansive site, Boavista Resort perches eminently atop a majestic coastline to the east of the historic town of Lagos. To the west, the popular resort of Praia da Luz, once a traditional fishing village, nestles in the lea of a hill. One of the most beautifully manicured golf courses in the Algarve, the resort enjoys far reaching views of the Monchique mountains to the north, whilst the pristine waters of the Atlantic Ocean provide a radiant seascape to the south. There are excellent transport links, with the resort being a few minutes drive from exit 1 off the A22 motorway, taking you to Faro International airport in 45 minutes. The Resort provides a shuttle bus service that picks up and drops off in Lagos and Praia da Luz, allowing guests easy mobility. Warm breezes roll in from North Africa bringing with them a mild year round climate and endless days of sunshine and blue skies. The local area is defined by a spectacular coastline with azure seas and sandy beaches framed by naturally sculpted limestone rocks which have formed magnificent caves and grottos. If these alone are insufficient to entice the visitor, Boavista has a plenitude of activities to offer - including its renowned championship golf course. Apart from the tourists cooling themselves in the sparkling waters, the ocean forms the focus to the Algarvian way of life. Visiting the area, people can be seen wading in the ocean at low tide to collect cockles and barnacles. Fishing boats are still launched from the beaches in the little fishing towns of Praia da Luz and Burgau and fishermen who learnt their trades from their
fathers, fish for mackerel and sardines. These delicacies can be enjoyed at one of many simple restaurants where fresh fish, grilled and drizzled with olive oil and washed down with local wine, will awake your senses. A great many water sports are available and concessions operate from several of the beaches offering high speed rides on inflatables, water skiing or wake boarding. For those that enjoy a more sedate ride, chartering a yacht or sunseeker may be an option. Fishing trips, pleasure boats, kayaking tours and paddle boarding are all popular with visitors. The west coast of Algarve, easily accessible from Boavista, affords a rugged and dramatic backdrop to a shoreline of powder soft golden sand much of which is unmarked by a footprint. Waves driven by the immense power of the Atlantic Ocean have sculpted the ancient rocks and cliffs that are synonymous with this coastline. It s majesty has become a mecca for surfers, while the undeveloped coastline is ideal for bird watching, spotting dolphins, clifftop walks and discovering deserted sandy coves. The coast between Lagos and Sagres is unspoilt and beautiful; thanks to the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina, which prohibits large-scale building. Most of the coast is linked by a coastal path offering pretty routes between the villages.
