CQ N9BAT: FD 2008 IS HERE! THE CLUB STATION WILL ONCE AGAIN BE ON DISPLAY IN NORTH RIVERSIDE he time of the year we all look forward to is finally here Field Day. A time to break out of the ordinary and get out and enjoy the great outdoors. As in years past, the Chicago Suburban Radio Association will hold Field Day in Veteran s Park, located on 26th Street, a halfmile west of Harlem Avenue in North Riverside. According to Field Day Co-Chairman Ed Schumacher WA9GQK, we are scheduled to run 3A once again this year. There will be not GOTA (Get On The Air) station setup, but the club will be setting a 2- meter talk-in station that will be located inside the Welcome Tent area. Talk-in for any visitors will be provided on 145.555 simplex and through the repeater on 146.88. Past and present CSRA members, family, and friends are all invited to come and meet with old friends and acquaintances. Relax and spend time seeing new and old amateur radio technology being used in a live environment. The club will also be doing a barbeque picnic dinner, beginning around 5:00 pm on Saturday evening. All are welcome and encouraged to stop by. Bring a side dish or desert to share if you like as well. Field Day set-up will begin around 10:00 am on Saturday morning, with kick-off at 1:00 pm. Station operators will be needed around the clock, so please try to attend. CSRA TXT NEWSLETTER JUNE 2008 THE OFFICIAL MINUTES THE MAY 2008 CSRA BOARD MEETING NORM MALINA - K9NJM CSRA SECRETARY The CSRA board discussed the tentative setup for Field Day. It looks like we will have three stations plus the welcome station, which will operate on the 145.555 simplex and 146.88 repeater frequency. The CSRA bike ride on May 31st will take place if the weather permits. The board decided to have a social on July 17th instead of a general meeting on that day. The social will be at D s Little Italy near 31st and LaGrange Road starting at 6:30PM. The board meeting ran into the general meeting, which is briefly covered below. MORE FIELD DAY 08 INFORMATION Anyone that brought a canopy last year is requested to bring one this year. Also, anyone who has another available canopy is encouraged to bring it as well. The other immediate need is to bring tables and chairs to the Field Day site. Even if you are just coming to visit, it is advised that you bring your own chair. Operators are needed at all times to keep the stations running. Please contact Ed, Ron or Norm for more info when you can be best utilized. Do not forget bug spray, suntan lotion and a flashlight of you will be on site in the dark hours. Any and all ice is appreciated! We will have a key to access the restrooms at the baseball field. 1. Two tickets to the Six Meter Hamfest in Wheaton on June 8th were raffled off. Congratulations to Scott Childers W9CHI and John Franta KA9MJE. 2. Ed (WA9GQK), who was in Dayton, left information covering an Open House on June 21st at the Illinois Rifle Range. The range is located in Bonfield (just west of Kankakee), and any CSRA members wishing to car pool should talk to Ed or Norm. You can bring the whole family if you wish. There will be military reenactments and an opportunity to shot if you want. There also is a picnic pavilion and indoor facilities. The next scheduled board and general meeting is on June 19th at Grace Lutheran Church in Westchester. RECYCLABLES NEEDED FOR GRACE! Attention members - we need your recyclables! - Used Compact Discs - 8 1/2 X 11 paper clean on one side - Clean jars of any size with lids - Old fishing line and old Crayons - Leftover clean party napkins - Cereal boxes - Empty, clean milk gallon jugs These items are needed for the Grace Lutheran Church Kids Summer Bible school project. They are planning for about 50 kids so I think it might be kind of nice for the club to help out. Be sure to bring these items to the June CSRA meeting. BIKE RIDE REPORT Vince NT9N, Tom N9TM, Norm K9NJM, Bill KC9EHL and Vince N9YIB met at the Brookfield Zoo Woods and trekked to Paul's Pizza at 31st and Wolf Road in Westchester. En-route, stopped by Ed WA9GQK s QTH. The weather was good and so was the pizza. About 1:00PM or so we headed back (I went home). I kept 2 meter communication with the bikers on the way back. Depending on interest and weather we may do another ride event before September. ALSO: VINCE KOEPKE - NT9N I d like the members to think about a special event station from the Santa Fe Caboose, sometime after Field Day. In the meantime, if anyone wants to check out their rig before field day, maybe the caboose would be a good place. Please contact me about stopping out on the weekends. Everyone can bring their FD rig to the caboose for a trial run. We will test one rig at a time. I will supply 12VDC battery, antenna tuner and Ground Mount antenna for 20 meters. Maybe they will have wire ant up in trees. If so I will supply 4:1 balun with PL259 connection. PAGE THREE

VINCE KOEPKE NT9N at 708/344-8355 or vk9n@netzero.com CSRA ASSISTS WITH COMMUNICATIONS DURING BERWYN CENTENNIAL PARADE NORM MALINA K9NJM Along with amateur radio operators from other clubs in the area, CSRA members practiced their radio and communication skills while helping with the Berwyn Centennial Parade on June 1st. Bill (KC9EHL) and his family member Joe were busy in back of the L- strip along with Tom (N9TM) and Norm (K9NJM). Lining up the floats as they did last year for the Houby Parade turned out to be routine for the CSRA members. The weather was perfect and the sixty or so entries were lined up for the parade in back of the L- strip over a six-block area with minimal difficulty. From beginning to end it took only about three hours to line up the parade participants. The parade started promptly at 2:00PM, and the parade participants left the L-strip going south on Lombard Avenue and then west on Cermak Road. Once the L-strip was cleared and the parade was under way, the job of the radio operators was finished. It was a good opportunity for the amateur radio operators to test their equipment and skills while having a presence with the general public. CSRA INFO NET Mondays at 8pm on 146.88 PAGE FOUR
