From the City... F Y I s First day for chipping in the spring is scheduled for Monday, April 13th This is your chance to spruce up those trees and bushes....branches /limbs (NO Leaves please) need to be left by the curb by 7am Monday morning. Future Dates: Save the date H W Recycling will be coming through Slater this year on June 22nd. June 8th Sept 14th This is a chance for Slater residents to get rid of old appliances, mowers, and electronics for FREE. They pick it up off your curb! Flushable wipes are NOT your sewer systems friend The City of Slater is asking everyone PLEASE do NOT flush wipes down the toilet. In recent years, the use of products such as pre-moistened flushable wipes have been advertised as a way to feel cleaner and fresher but most don t know they have caused damage to wastewater systems across the country and right here in Slater! Even though these products are advertised as flushable, and they may go down the toilet, they are not breaking down sufficiently to go through the sewer system. Resulting in clogged pipes and jammed pumps!! This also includes: toilet cleaning pop off pads, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product that may be advertised as flushable....thank You!! Door to Door Sales persons are required to have a Peddler s Permit to sell within the City of Slater. A Peddler s Permit means that they have provided Slater City Hall with a copy of their drivers license, vehicle information, and a copy of their promotional materials. This also means that City staffed has checked this person / people out with the Story County Sheriff s office. Upon your request, they must present a permit that has been issued by the City of Slater. If they have not done so, please send them to City Hall to fill out proper paperwork. Groups exempt from such a permit are non-profits such as Scouts or youth groups. IF ANYONE COMES TO YOUR DOOR AND MAKES YOU FEEL UNEASY, CALL THE SHERIFF S OFFICE @ 515-382-6566

Discussion will be on Thursday, March 26 at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Child care is provided for the morning session. Overview: It is Enniscorthy in the southeast of Ireland in the early 1950s. Eilis Lacey is one among many of her generation who cannot find work at home. Thus when a job is offered in America, it is clear to everyone that she must go. Leaving her family and country, Eilis heads for unfamiliar Brooklyn, and to a crowded boarding house where the landlady s intense scrutiny and the small jealousies of her fellow residents only deepen her isolation. Slowly, however, the pain of parting is buried beneath the rhythms of her new life until she begins to realize that she has found a sort of happiness. As she falls in love, news comes from home that forces her back to Enniscorthy, not to the constrictions of her old life, but to new possibilities which conflict deeply with the life she has left behind in Brooklyn. - barnesandnoble.com In April, we will read the Louis Zamperini biography Unbroken written by Laura Hillenbrand and watch the movie. Watch for information on date and times. Movie showing will be open to the public. (Rated PG-13). Mark your calendars! With films, memorabilia, and music, it s not just coffee and doughnuts, it s a trip down memory lane. TOOLS OF THE TRADE Exhibit Coming in July Tools of the Trade will be our new exhibit, now in the planning stage at Heritage Hall. If you have old tools that were used on the farm, in the kitchen, in building, in a profession, in the shop, please consider loaning them to us for this new display. Call 515-480- 9789 or stop by on Thursdays 10-2. Shown in use in the photo is the Permanent Wave Machine, circa 1920 s, which SAHA has on permanent display a professional tool used at a woman s own risk! What do you have that you remember your parents or grandparents (or you) using years ago? We d love your stories too. The SAHA Gift Shop Stop by to shop for gifts and items for yourself. We have available unique items relating to our hometown. Kitchen towels, tote bags, coasters, books, cards, and of course, the City Flag. Check it out! Preserving Our Veteran s Memories The Slater Area Historical Association is collecting the valuable stories of our veteran s experiences. It s becoming urgent to capture the memories of our World War Two vets and our Korean War vets and we also record the memories of those who served in later conflicts. The Association supplies the vet and his family with a complementary CD recording his memories, a precious record of his or her experiences. We gently lead the storyteller through his memories and also collect information. Please let us know if you would like to participate. Visit our Wall of Heroes and our room of artifacts and records honoring our local veterans. Seeking Your Ancestors? Did you know that the Historical Association has Ancestry.com available for those who visit Heritage Hall? And we also have Ellis Island s website, archives.com, and other programs for our patrons. Plus, if you are seeking to know more about your family, we have local obituaries back to the 1890 s, family trees, and written stories from those who came before us. We can help you find a gravesite, a long lost greatgrandparent, a history of your family s emigration, and more. Remember Heritage Hall, at 318 First Avenue in Slater, is open on Thursdays from 10-2, but you can easily call for an appointment to visit, 515-480-9789. If you have old Ballard or Slater yearbooks consider contributing them to SAHA.
