A D i s t i n g u i s h e d H i s t o r y The Main Line Since Lower Merion Township was officially founded in 1713, the area s rolling green hills, flowing rivers, and open meadows proved an irresistible magnet to wealthy city dwellers looking to escape the city by building great country estates. In 1832, the Columbia Railroad opened the area s first rail line, which made Center City Philadelphia a manageable daily commute.
