In India the Wake of the Vikings Copenhagen to Edinburgh Aboard Sea Cloud II Paul Freedman Chester D. Tripp Professor of History Professor of Management Chair, History & Political of Science, Science History of Medicine July 10 21, 2018

Dear Yale Traveler Sea Cloud II I m delighted to be your study leader on this Viking adventure and, along with my wife, Nanette, look forward to exploring this fascinating part of northern Europe. In addition to the many cultural places of interest in Norway and Scotland, we will see up close a distinct region of Europe undergoing many changes due to social, political, and economic shifts. These changes will be the focus of my lectures and discussions. Under midsummer skies, sail to Scandinavian and Scottish cities with their marvelous mix of medieval and modern. Embark the elegant Sea Cloud II in Copenhagen and sail to Oslo and Stavanger. View masterpieces at the Bergen Art Museum. Navigate the picturesque Shetland Islands, and step ashore at Kirkwall to visit a Neolithic tomb and fishing village. Spend a day in the lively university city of Aberdeen, visit 16th-century Crathes Castle, with its remarkable gardens, and the fascinating maritime Museum. Disembark in Edinburgh. An optional prelude in Copenhagen and an optional postlude in Edinburgh are offered. To hold your spot on this delightful program, please call 203-432-1952, visit: www.yaleedtravel.org/ vikings18 or email edtravel@yale.edu with any questions. Hope you can join me aboard Sea Cloud II in the North Sea next summer! With best wishes from Yale, Professor of Management and Political Science Highlights Spend a morning in Oslo and stroll in the charming Old Town of Stavanger Attend a private recital at Troldhaugen, Edvard Grieg s summer villa Sail the route of the Vikings as the three-masted Sea Cloud II crosses the North Sea Visit Crathes Castle in the university city of Aberdeen and the clifftop fortress Dunnottar Castle Front cover: Stones of Stenness Puffins, Shetland Islands P.S. We are offering a special enticement to join our Sailing the Baltic s Amber Coast voyage, immediately preceding this program, from June 29 to July 11. Guests who book both cruises will receive back-to-back incentives of $1,250 per person per cruise, a savings of $5,000 per couple.* This offer includes a private car and driver for a half day in Copenhagen. He draws on his years of experience analyzing defense strategy to make the case that the United States needs to start thinking seriously about these issues once again. The Northmen by John Haywood In this magisterial chronicle, Viking historian John Haywood delves into the Vikings age of expansion, which created a trading network that stretched (incredibly!) from Newfoundland to Baghdad. He begins with the sack of Lindisfarne (793 CE) and finishes in 1241 CE with the murder of the Icelandic saga-writer Snorri Sturluson. Haywood explains why Scandinavians adopted Christianity, the technology behind their plundering, and why their society went into decline.
