Data Sheet #8 United States Naval Losses of WWII Surface Vessels This data sheet provides a listing of the major named U.S. Naval vessel losses for World War If. This list does not include unnamed vessels such as the landing craft, district craft, small craft, drydocks, and unnamed patrol vessels. Submarine losses are incorporated in Data Sheet #2, compiled by members of USS NATHAN HALE Chapter #68. The cause of each loss, location, and date of loss are given for each ship listed using the official Navy Department release of October 2, 1945 as the primary source. Where the actual location of the ship's loss is not shown, a general geographic area is given. A number of ships werÿ heavily damaged by enemy action and subsequently sunk or destroyed by U.S. forces; in these cases the date shown is the date of sinking or destruction. Such conflicts in dates or cause as may exist in various references were generally resolved in favor of information contained in the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships. This Data Sheet was compiled initially by Roger A. Wentworth (9963) with assistance of James P. Myerson, Helen St. John, and H.E. Musgrove who provided the raw material to put this list together. In February, 1992, the list was revised and edited by James E. Smith (5861), John Milewski, Sr. (4604) and Robert Rawlins (5490).
