Bridges and Structures Commitment: $2. million over five years Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation has a five-year plan to invest $2 billion in Manitoba s road system. Of this, $.2 billion is for capital construction and renewal. One part of the five-year plan addresses the bridges and structures which link the road system across the province. Manitoba has 2400 bridges and structures on the provincial highway system, of which 20 are bridges. The other structures include overpasses, large culverts and overhead sign structures throughout the province. Structures designed before 994 generally have a design life of 40 to 0 years. The use of new timber, concrete or steel technologies has advanced the design life of modern bridges to 7 years. A large number of provincial bridges and structures were built in the 90s and require or will require significant rehabilitation work. A lack of planning over previous decades has increased the need for more up-front investment to catch up on use and load carrying demand and to maintain safety. To ensure the continued safety and efficiency of the network, Manitoba has substantially increased investment in structures on the highway system. There is also more funding to monitor and inspect bridges, providing the current information needed to make reasonable decisions for strategic investments. P r o j e c t S c o p e Over the next five years, $2. million is scheduled to be spent on bridges and structures across the province. 2007 2008 2009 20 $47.7 million $4. million $47.2 million $2.9 million $7. million
