Sydney San Francisco Melbourne 5.3. History Fiji was first settled over 3,500 years ago by the Lapita people from the Melanesian Islands. The first Europeans to sight Fiji were Dutch explorers Abel Tasman in 1643 and James Cook in 1774. However, it was not until 1789 that the islands were charted and plotted, when Captain William Bligh traveled through Fiji in an open longboat after the mutiny on the HMS Bounty in 1789 and returned to explore in 1792. Europeans later began settling in the islands in the 1860s, following which, Fiji became a British Crown Colony on 10 October 1874. To encourage economic development of the new colony, Indians were brought in as indentured laborers to establish sugar plantations and processing mills. However, Indians stayed on as permanent settlers at the end of the system in 1920. In 1970, a constitutional conference in London agreed that Fiji should become a fully sovereign and independent nation within the Commonwealth of Nations. Thus, Fiji gained independence on 10 October 1970, and today stands as a thriving democracy. 6.
