AMERICAN DELEGATION OF SAVOY ORDERS PART II The Road of the Dukes of Savoy Tour Savoy, France Savoy Castles and Cuisine of the Savoy Region May 30, 2011 Exclusively for American Delegation Members and their Guests The castles and abbeys in the Savoie and Haute Savoie regions reflect the long history of the Savoy Dynasty. This family had a massive influence in the past on the Savoie and Haute Savoie regions, which together were termed Duché de Savoie. This full day tour includes English speaking guide, private bus transportation, four course lunch, admission fees, taxes and gratuities. Itinerary times are approximate. (Note: All tour arrivals and departures will be from the Hotel InterContinental in Geneva.) (Note: Tour itinerary subject to change for logistical considerations) MAY 30, 2011 ITINERARY 8:00 a.m. departure from Geneva to the Castle of Menthon Saint Bernard: Authorized English speaking guide and departure by chartered bus for the full day tour of the Savoy castles and their breathtaking environs. Castle of Menthon Saint Bernard The castle is located on the edge of Lake Annecy. The origins of the castle date back to the celtic times, 500 BC. The name Menthon comes from the Celtic men dun meaning tower on the rock. Apparently at this time, the castle sported a big wooden tower. The existing castle was built during the 12 th century and it has been owned by the same family for over 800 years. One of the famous Menthon was Bernard de Menthon who became Saint Bernard (1008 1081). He became the patron Saint of the mountain man and the skier. Page 5
12:30 p.m. Lunch: Dine at the charming and picturesque Savoyard restaurant, the L Auberge de Savières, on the colorful Canal de Savières in Chanaz, with a typical regional menu (included in the tour price). L Auberge de Savières on the Savières Canal in Chanaz In the county of Savoie, you will discover a flowery village extremely well situated. Indeed, Chanaz, through which the Canal de Savierès flows, is close to the Rhone and the lake of Le Bourget. You will enjoy lunch at the L Auberge de Savierès located on the canal, which keeps alive the local cuisine through its regional specialties. Chanaz and its ancient houses attest to a rich historical past, the consequence of its position on the canal s shores. Once the main waterway between Savoy, France and Switzerland until the middle of the XIX century, the harbor of Chanaz was a mini Venice with its sailors, its multicolored flotillas and its famous visitors. 2:30 p.m.: Departure for the Castle of Miolans Castle of Miolans Classified as an historic monument since 1944, Miolans Castle stands at an altitude of 550 meters on a rocky cliff overlooking the Combe de Savoie. The earliest castle stood on the site of the Saint Pierre Tower, a primitive dungeon built by the lords of Miolans in the l2th century. In the late 14th century, Jean de Miolans began expanding the castle, and Anthelme IV modified it in the l5th century to keep step with developments in artillery. These improvements solidified the power and autonomy of this family not only in Savoy but also in Dauphiné and Viennois. When the dynasty died out in 1523, the castle passed into the hands of Duke Charles III of Savoy, but by then had become too outdated for military purposes. From 1564 to 1792, Miolans Castle served as a state run prison. The Marquis de Sade was one of its most famous prisoners. The Guiter family, owners of the monument since 1869, has restored the castle and opened it to the public. 5:00 p.m.: Return to Geneva and Evening Free for Overnight Stay or Departure Page 6
