Our handcrafted itinerary is notable for the variety of places to be discovered, sites located in exceptionally striking settings that bring to life the spirit of the civilizations that created them. We will explore seldom-visited Kythira, the reported birthplace of Aphrodite, encounter Knossos, where a restored palace reveals the brilliance of the Minoan civilization, and experience Rhodes, one of Europe s most impressive medieval towns. On Santorini, there will be time to reexamine the legend of Atlantis, and on Patmos to reacquaint ourselves with the Book of Revelation. Ancient Ephesus, perhaps the most fully intact of ancient sites, and Delos, a rarely visited veritable open-air museum of the gods, will simply amaze us. Professor Billows and other well-known scholars add insight to our voyage and enhance our understanding of the sites through formal lectures and personal exchanges. Columbia Faculty Richard Billows is a Professor of History at Columbia University, where he has taught since 1985. He specializes in Ancient Greek and Roman History and Greek epigraphy. Professor Billows looks forward to discussing the intersection of religion, society, and culture in the classical world; he has a longstanding interest in the origins of Christianity and its relationship to earlier religions. He is the author of numerous publications including Antigonos the One-Eyed and the Creation of the Hellenistic State and Kings and Colonists: Aspects of Macedonian Imperialism. A book on Julius Caesar and the end of the Roman republican governing system will appear at the end of 2008. Educated at Balliol College, Oxford University; King s College, London; and UC Berkeley, Professor Billows has been a lifelong scholar of the classical world and is eager to return to the Mediterranean with alumni to share his knowledge and insights. A minimum number of participants is required for Faculty participation. Guest Lecturers Achilles Avraamides, Associate professor in History at Iowa State University, received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in ancient history. He is thoroughly familiar with Greek of all periods and has studied many of the Mesopotamian languages and Biblical Hebrew. He specializes in the history of thought and religion in the ancient world with emphasis on the influence of Platonic philosophy on the development of Christian theology. Dr. Avraamides has taught courses on the Ancient Near East, Greece, Rome, and Byzantium, and has served as study leader on several Smithsonian study tours in the Mediterranean. Dimitri Liakos, Professor of Greek Classical Art and Early Christian and Byzantine Art at Northern Illinois University, has been teaching, lecturing, and promoting the inimitable contributions of the ancient Greeks to the modern world for more than 40 years. For 25 years, he served as Chair and Director of the Art History Department of NIU s School of Art, and he has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the university s prestigious Excellence in Teaching Award. Professor Liakos serves as President of the Art Institute s Classical Art Society and of ALPHA: Friends of Antiquity, a society he founded in 1971. He is a frequent lecturer and familiar face at the Art Institute as well as at other museums and cultural institutions throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Francesca Shironi is assistant professor in the Department of the Classics at Harvard. Born and raised in Italy, she received her first degree in Classics at the University of Pavia in 1997 and her Ph.D. in 2002 from the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa. She was a junior research fellow at Somerville College in Oxford, as well as a lecturer at Exeter College, Oxford and at Reading University. Francesca s research interests include ancient scholarship and literary criticism, as well as papyrology. Santorini Sunday, May 3 ATHENS or BRAURON sounion PIRAEUS EMBARK The birthplace of western civilization, Athens retains numerous monuments that illustrate its brilliant heritage. Enjoy a tour of the Acropolis, crowned by the majestic ruins of the Parthenon, perhaps the most architecturally perfect structure in the West. In the afternoon, visit the National Archaeological Museum. Alternatively, take an excursion to Brauron to visit the Sanctuary of Artemis and Sounion, where its famed Temple of Poseidon stands on a headland overlooking the sea. Transfer to Piraeus to board the Clelia II, and sail in the evening. (B, L, D) Greece Kythira Aegean ATHENS Sea Syros Rethymnon Crete Monday, May 4 KYTHIRA Wild and undeveloped, Kythira was the reported birthplace of Aphrodite, with scrub-filled moorlands and deep ravines covering much of the island. Once a possession of Venice, which called it Cerigo, Kythira still bears evidence of its Venetian influence. A Venetian castle towers over Kapsali, the island s main town. Visit the castle ruins and enjoy time in the town. From here, take a drive to the Byzantine village of Paleochora, its former medieval capital, whose splendid remains are set spectacularly at the head of a gorge, and to Livahdi to tour the Byzantine Museum. (B, L, D) Delos Santorini Knossos Patmos Turkey Ephesus Kusadasi Rhodes Lindos Tuesday, May 5 rethymnon KNOSSOS rethymnon, CRETE Crete, Zeus s legendary birthplace, was home to the Bronze Age Minoan Civilization, Europe s first. Crete is also noted for its incredibly rich flora, with a variety of wildflowers covering the island in the spring. Land at lovely Rethymnon, with its strong architecture dating from the time the island was under Venice (1204 1669), for a choice of excursions. Explore Rethymnon and drive to Knossos, where the brilliance and refinement of the Minoans are revealed in the restored palace, a labyrinth of corridors, stairways, and chambers decorated with frescos illustrating life as it was some 4,000 years ago. Also visit the Heraklion Museum, with its exhibits of exquisite Minoan artifacts. Alternatively, spend the day exploring Crete s singularly beautiful southern region, including the Imbros Gorge and Frangokástello, a 14 th -century Venetian fort built by a bay. (B, L, D) Wednesday, May 6 SANTORINI Today we sail into the dramatic caldera above which rises Santorini. In the second millennium b.c., volcanic eruptions shrouded the island of Santorini in a blanket of pumice and ash and collapsed the island into a fractured caldera. This

ultimately produced the wild, otherworldly, multi-hued beauty of the island, while sending the Minoan civilization into irreversible decline. Take a cable car ride up to the whitewashed homes, shops, cafes, and churches of Phira. Then visit the Nomikos Foundation, where excellent reproductions of Akrotiri s Minoan frescoes are on display, and continue to the Prehistoric History Museum of Thera. (B, L, D) Thursday, May 7 RHODES LINDOS RHODES Rhodes reached its pinnacle during the Hellenistic period when it was a major center of commerce, learning, and the arts. Arrive this morning and ascend Monte Smith, the site of the ancient acropolis of Hellenistic Rhodes. See the restored 2 nd -century b.c. stadium, the theater, and the remains of temples dedicated to Zeus, Athena, and Pythian Apollo. Also explore the Old Town, one of Europe s best-preserved and most impressive medieval towns. In lovely Lindos, enjoy lunch at Mavrikos, one of Greece s top restaurants, after which you may take a donkey ride up to the acropolis or spend time relaxing at Lindos s fine-sand beach. (B, L, D) Friday, May 8 PATMOS Patmos, where St. John received his revelations, is one of the most beautiful islands in the Aegean. Our tour includes the 11 th -century Monastery of the Revelation with enormous towers, domed roofs, belfries, and battlements. The monastery also contains priceless icons and Knossos, Crete manuscripts, as well as fine embroideries and other objects. (B, L, D) Saturday, May 9 KUSADASI EPHESUS PRIENE KUSADASI, turkey From the seaside town of Kusadasi, visit the great ancient city of Ephesus, one of the most important cities in the ancient world, with extensive ruins from the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods. Visit the large theater in which the Ephesians rioted against St. Paul, the Library of Celsus with its imposing facade, the Temple of Serapis, and other remains. Spend the afternoon at leisure in Kusadasi or drive to Priene, founded by Greek colonists in 350 b.c., commanding a beautiful location on a promontory. The well-preserved ruins include the Temple of Athena, a theater, and others. (B, L, D) Sunday, May 10 DELOS SYROS, greece Situated in the heart of the Aegean, the pristine island of Delos is the legendary birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. A walking tour leads to the excavation of the main shrines of Apollo and Artemis, as well as to the Terrace of the Lions, which guards over the Sacred Lake. Continue to the little island of Syros, whose main town, Ermoupolis, is noted for its neoclassical architecture. Enjoy time at leisure.
