GARFIELD COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY DISTRICT 2007 ANNUAL REPORT MISSION We are passionate about making a difference in our community, one person at a time, by enriching lives and empowering people through relevant, accessible, highquality library services. www.garfieldlibraries.org

2007 HIGHLIGHTS Thanks to the voters approval of two ballot issues in the fall of 2006, Garfield County Public Library District was formed as of January 1, 2007. The District worked extensively with all six communities to develop a strategic plan that will carry the libraries through 2011 and will assist in moving forward with new and remodeled facilities. The Parachute Branch hosted the district s first-ever Adult Summer Reading program with 115 participants who read a total of 2,716 hours following the theme Get a Clue. The New Castle Branch Library participated in the Kosovo/Colorado Reciprocal Mural Project, co-sponsored by New Hope Global Action and the Town of New Castle, by having a mural painted on the front of the building, facing Main Street. The visiting artists felt the mountains were much like those at home in Kosovo and saw the mural as having a friendship and brotherhood theme. Silt Branch Manager Janine Rose was named as one of 13 national winners of the New York Times Librarian of the Year Award. She was nominated by Jenny Zetah, who wrote, Our small branch library has a wonderful reputation as the most welcoming library around. This is due to Janine s positive nature, her willingness to help anyone who walks into the library, and the smile that is always on her face. The Rifle Branch Library opened a new teen area with the help of their Teen Advisory Group, featuring books, magazines, comics, and comfy furniture, and in December purchased a new microfilm reader/printer for the local history collection. The Glenwood Springs Branch partnered with local muralist Renick Stevenson to create The Community Mural Project. The ten portable 8- foot-long mural panels were hung in the library and represent the community s past, present, and future. Over 200 individuals, ranging in age from 18 months to 84 years old, provided images and helped to paint the murals. Carbondale s Gordon Cooper Branch Library hosted One Book, One Town featuring Greg Mortenson s Three Cups of Tea: One Man s Mission to Promote Peace...One School at a Time, about his efforts to build schools for girls in rural Afghanistan. The program raised over $29,000 for his foundation and reached over 1,800 people, including children in grades 6 and up. Garfield County Public Library District welcomed new Executive Director Amelia Shelley in December. She brings 13 years of library experience and a passion for excellence in public service.
