Overnight in elo Horizonte. elo Horizonte is the third largest city in razil and was the country s first planned modern city, established in the 1890 s. Originally a small village, the city s modern layout is based on Washington DC, with a mix of contemporary and classical architecture. The landscape includes large parks and native forest. elo Horizonte means beautiful horizon, referring to the surrounding mountains. D Day 2 elo Horizonte - Ouro Preto Meals Ouro Preto Spend the day exploring the tropical park of Inhotim. Transfer to Ouro Preto. Overnight in Ouro Preto. Inhotim is an outdoor contemporary arts centre and botanical garden. It was created by ernardo Paz and includes over 500 works of art from 100 different artists, both razilian and international. What began as Paz s private art collection opened to the public in 2006 and includes many interactive installations. Day 3 Ouro Preto Meals Take a tour of Ouro Preto. HIDDEN RAZIL Ouro Preto in Mariana. Return to Ouro Preto. Overnight in Ouro Preto. Ouro Preto is a small colonial town nestled in the mountains. It was founded in the 17th century during the gold rush and was a focal point of the gold mining industry. The town is now known for its historic aroque architecture and steep cobbled streets. It was granted World Heritage status by UNESCO in 1980 for its examples of colonial bridges and churches. Museu da Inconfidência is a history museum built to commemorate those who died in the failed Inconfidência Mineira movement for independence from Portugal. A former president declared those who fell as martyrs and had their bodies brought home from African exile. The museum was established in 1938 and displays personal objects of those who died. Congonhas is a historic town in the razilian highlands. It was once a mining centre for iron, nickel and gold. It is now known for its iconic church and handicrafts. Mariana is a baroque mining city. Founded in 1696, it is known for its colonial style churches, buildings and museums. Day 4 Ouro Preto - Iguaçu Meals Iguaçu Falls Transfer to the airport for flight on to Iguaçu. Following your arrival, you will have the opportunity to meet the Guarani-Mbya community. Experience authentic indigenous culture during an evening Guarani ceremony. Overnight in Iguaçu. Guarani-Mbya Community is an indigenous community situated close to the Iguazu National Park. The area was only recently recovered in part by native locals after a long history of colonisation. The locals farm and raise animals on the land, and create and sell handicrafts to supplement their income. Day 5 Iguaçu (razilian & Argentinian side) Meals Iguaçu Falls egin the day on the razilian side of the Iguaçu Waterfall. Travel by foot along trails that will lead you to panoramic viewpoints, before taking a glass elevator to experience a unique vista of the falls below. Venture across Tancredo Neves ridge into Argentina. Spend the day in Iguaçu National Park where you will venture to the cascades of Devil's Throat. Overnight in Iguaçu. Iguaçu Falls is a natural site at the border of razil and Argentina, comprised of 275 waterfalls, with the entire site measuring 2.7 kilometres from end to end. The name of the site, as well as the river it pours into, both come from the native Guarani language, literally meaning big water. The site has also been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The site was discovered in 1541 by Spanish explorer Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca. Devil's Throat is one of 275 waterfalls found at the Iguazu Falls site, and is the tallest of all the cataracts. Shaped like a horseshoe, the waterfall measures 80 metres in length, and contains 14 seperate systems within it. ID 2319 - P a g e 3
HIDDEN RAZIL Day 6 Iguaçu - Jesuit Missions Meals Drive through picturesque countryside and tea plantations to the Jesuit Missions. Stop en route for a tour of an open-cast gemstone mine. Spend the rest of the day in the region of the Guarani Republic, where you will visit the ruins of Jesuit Mission, San Ignacio. Overnight in Iguaçu. The Jesuit Missions of Chiquitos are made up of six separate towns. They were founded as reductions, meaning settlements of Christianised Indians, by the Jesuits in the 17th and 18th century. They combine Catholic architecture with local tradition and provide a living heritage of Chiquitos. The six missions are collectively recognised as UNESCO World Heritage sites. San Ignacio Miní is a 17th century Jesuit mission complex. The remains still display the unique mixture of Spanish baroque architecture and traditional Guarani influences. Day 7 Iguaçu - Campo Grande Meals Transfer to the airport for flight to Campo Grande. On arrival you will be driven to onito. Overnight in onito. onito is a small town within the odoquena mountain range. Fresh water rivers, waterfalls and stalactite caves contribute to the towns natural beauty. There is also an abundance of wildlife including toucans and alligators. Day 8 Sucuri & Gruta do Lago Azul Meals egin the day with a walk along the forest trail in the Sucuri region, where you will see a variety of flora and fauna, before taking the opportunity to snorkel down Sucuri River. Travel to see the natural lakes of Gruta do Lago Azul. Return to onito. Overnight in onito. Sucuri River is in the town of onito. Its crystal clarity and abundance of fish make it perfect for snorkelling. The Grata do Lago Azul, or lue Lake Grotto, was discovered in onito in 1924. It is part of a large cavity flooded with clear blue water. The lake is 200 feet deep and 160 feet long, with prehistoric animal bones scattered along the bottom. It is particularly breath-taking when sunlight hits the bright blue water through the opening of the cave. Day 9 onito - Miranda Meals Depart onito and travel to Miranda. Overnight in Miranda. HIDDEN RAZIL Miranda is a small farming town in Mato Grosso do Sol. Its main focus is local economy. The community has a large culture and arts centre where locals often sell handmade arts and crafts. It is relatively unspoilt by tourism. On arrival, you will be driven to your hotel for check in. Overnight in Salvador. Salvador is the fourth-largest city in razil, and the capital of the state of ahia. First founded in 1549 by Portuguese explorers as razil's first capital, it contains several significant historical sites from Portuguese colonisation, and as a result contains sections that have been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is renowned for its culture, including cuisine and music. Day 13 Salvador - Pelourinho - Salvador Meals ID 2319 - P a g e 5
HIDDEN RAZIL Salvador egin the day by visiting the Alagados Cultural Space Headquarters and the Luiza Mahin Community School. Later, take a tour of Pelourinho. Some of the highlights will include the Cathedral asilica, Cravinho ar and the house of famous writer, Jorge Amado. Return to Salvador. Overnight in Salvador. Pelourinho is the historic centre of the city of Salvador, and has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Located in the western area of the city it is renowned for its adherence to its original 16th-century building plan, with architecture and historical remnants from the 17th-19th centuries. Alagados Cultural Space Headquarters in Salvador acts as an open space for local young people. It welcomes theatre, dance, music and art, as well as support with school studies. It promotes a sense of community spirit and provides an outlet for young people to express themselves. L Day 14 Salvador - Lençóis Meals Depart Salvador and drive to Lençóis. Following your arrival, the rest of the day will be free to spend at your leisure. Overnight in Lençóis. The town of Lençóis lies in eastern razil, bordering Chapada Diamantina National Park. The colonial town is a former diamond-mining town, which houses quaint cobbled streets and brightly painted buildings, typical of the 19th-century. Day 15 Luz & Griô Meals egin the day with a tour of the Grãos de Luz e Griô Community Center. Drive to Quilombo do Remanso, where you will meet the rural community and enjoy a local family meal. Later, take a canoe ride through the wetlands of the Marimbus. Return to Lençóis. Overnight in Lençóis. Grãos de Luz e Griô Community Centre runs cultural workshops for adolescents and their families. These include dance, crafts, and popular music. The main goal of the centre is to create a sense of community and to teach local youth about Afro-indigenous traditions and identity. Day 16 Caves of Lençóis Meals Spend a day exploring the caves of the Lençóis region. These will include Lapa Doce, Pratinha and Gruta Azul. Following this you will climb to the summit of Morro de Pai Inácio to watch the sunset. Overnight in Lençóis. Morro de Pai Inácio, or Mount of Pal Inácio, stands at 1,120 metres high in a Chapada Diamantina National Park. Those who reach the peak of the mountain can enjoy a panoramic view over the nature reserve. ID 2319 - P a g e 6
