Message from the President : As you may know, Len and I just got back from our Route 66 trip. Candy Bundy and Gary Fowler came along for the ride and was it a great ride. With Candy and Gary keeping us on check, we enjoyed our mini rally from Chicago to Santa Monica CA. Len I know will be telling you about our trip in his article but I must tell you that my favorite part was sharing our trip with our friends. I felt like a teenager (and that was a long time ago) all over again. We shared, laughed and were in awe. Well, the car club corvette season is coming to an end. Most of us put our babies to sleep in the garage for the winter until the spring. But we had a great spring and summer enjoying the rallies, barbeque's and car shows. Now we are looking forward to the holiday season with our gala coming up in December. I am really looking forward to the cooler nights and sparkling lights of the season. Our gala will be spectacular. Please plan on being there. I love seeing past club members, new club members and us die hards enjoy telling stories of the past and present. I know this time I will definitely be dancing. For those who went last year, you may recall I was recovering from my right knee replacement and was using a walker. Well the walker is gone and I am ready to rock and roll. Just because the weather is not ideal for driving our corvettes we will still have plans for our club to get together for scheduled jacket nights. I miss seeing all the familiar faces with so much in common. So please look at our schedule after I get back from my trip. I am in Virginia right now helping my son recover from his hip surgery. Yes, I had to cut my trip short. Len, Candy and Gary saw me off from Albuquerque to Virginia and they finished the trip. Len did send me photos of the TeePee motel. I do want to thank Bob Thomas, our VP, for taking over for me at the last meeting. I was coming down with a cold and I couldn t speak without coughing. It would not have been a pretty sight. Celebrating Veterans NATIONAL CORVETTE MUSEUM November 3-5, 2016 is the Museum s annual celebration of veterans - Vets 'n Vettes presented by Mobil 1. Thursday's activities focus on showing appreciation to those who have served as well as members of the Warrior Transition Battalion from Fort Knox with laps and rides in Corvettes at the NCM Motorsports Park, Museum and Plant tours, and a recognition lunch presented by Don Franklin Chevrolet, Buick, GMC of Somerset, KY. Other activities include a meet 'n greet with dinner at the local VFW, road tours, poker run, banquet and participation in the Bowling Green Veteran's Day Parade. Registration is only $20. Route 66 As winter approaches, there are less things happening at the Museum, therefore, less things for me to write about. This does give me the opportunity to tell you about my Route 66 trip. There are too many things to see and talk about that I ll just give you a quick summary. Elvira and I along with Gary and Candy started early on a Sunday morning for a three day, (long days) 2100 mile trip to Chicago. We spent Wednesday in Chicago and did a city bus tour. We did the first few miles that day to get out of the Chicago area. Route 66 goes south - west through the Chicago suburbs, a little rough area but we did not go through South Chicago. The next day we resumed our trip from the outside of Chicago and went to Collinsville, IL. We found early in the trip, if you want to see the Museums and other attractions, do not start too early. Most attractions do not open until 10:00.We were too early for the Route 66 Welcome Museum, but we did see the Gemini Giant in Wilmington. The next day, it was on to Springfield, MO, going around St Louis. In both Illinois and Missouri Route 66 is posted verily well. There are several restored gas stations with old pumps, etc to check out, some with gift shops and some restaurants still in operation, good stops if it s lunch time. Also some motels in varies conditions. The following day, it was through Kansas and then on to Oklahoma. Even though it was only 13 while through the corner of Kansas, we found a nice coffee house for lunch and met some of the local residents in the city of Galena. One of the locals having lunch at the same time was the operator of the local Museum. He volunteered to open the Museum for us and would have spent the rest of the day talking about the displays and history in the museum if we would have had the time. We bypassed Tulsa and Oklahoma City as suggested by the Route 66 maps. We learned our lesson by driving through Bloomington, IL. We spent Saturday night just west of Oklahoma City (El Reno). On Sunday, as we started our day, we found that not many things are open on Sunday in Oklahoma, especially in the small towns. We missed one nice Museum because of the Sunday schedule, but waited in Elk City for an hour while we washed our Vettes for their Museum to open. In Shamrock, TX we stopped at a restored CONOCO Station and the U-Drop Inn that is considered an art deco masterpiece. The part that I found interesting is that around the side, it has a TESLA charging station. The station and gift shop was closed, Sunday of course. On to Amarillo for the night. Almost out of Texas going west is the City of Adrian, the Midpoint of Route 66, and the Midpoint Café, our lunch stop. They had good food, and we had to taste one of their ugly pies. We chose to split a piece of the Elvis pie, cream pie with peanut butter, chocolate, and bananas. The first exit west bound on I-40(I-40 is Route 66 at this point) in New Mexico is the Russell s Travel Center that has a free Car & Toy Museum. The Museum is well worth the stop. That night was spent in Santa Rosa, NM. Route 66 in the Albuquerque area has the newer route (I-40 at this point) directly into Albuquerque and the older route (US 84, two lane through mountains) that takes you through Santa Fe. We took the older Route. We had lunch in Santa Fe and spent some time in the downtown plaza. We then drove Route 66/I-25 to Albuquerque, visited that plaza, quickly, the on to our hotel for the night. Continued Next Page Classical Glass Corvette Club Under Glass 8
Albuquerque has a second parallel path to the west that we decided not to take. It was on to Arizona and the Petrified Forest. Route 66 did at one time go through the Petrified Forest, but now it is I-40. We went through the forest and out the south exit and then drove to Holbrook for the night. Holbrook is the location of the Arizona Wigwam Motel, no we did not stay there. We spent some extra time in Arizona. The following day we went to the Meteor Crater and the on the Grand Canyon Visitors Center and the edge of the Canyon. We stayed that night in Williams, AZ. The next day it was on to California and Barstow. But the trip would not be complete without seeing Oatman, AZ. The west route to Oatman goes along a very narrow curving mountain road. Oatman has a lot of shops for the tourist, but their main attraction is the burro lined streets. And, of course, you could buy food to feed the burros. Their peak season is from October to May because of the 120 degree summers. After leaving Barstow, we went through Victorville and past the California Route 66 Museum, unfortunately it was closed until 11:00. Then on to San Bernardino for the McDonalds Museum and the California Wigwam Motel which is nicer than the Arizona version. Then it is on to Pasadena, Los Angeles, West Hollywood Beverly Hills, West LA, and Santa Monica. We planned to arrive on a Saturday to avoid as much traffic as possible through these areas. Unfortunately, the Los Angeles and surrounding areas were in the 90s and 100s. It looked like half of California was in Santa Monica to cool down (80s) and we could not find any parking to get on the pier. We had planned to spend Sunday in the LA area near the beach, so it worked out. We left for our two day trip home on Monday morning and went by the Santa Monica Pier before we left the LA area. Disclaimer. We did not travel any of the dirt or gravel roads. We did not always stay on the frontage roads when they ran parallel to the interstate. Except for the Santa Fe section, we stayed on the newer Route 66. Other comments. This was a great trip and we really enjoyed ourselves. We met a lot of nice, friendly people along the way both travelers and locals. There are more European travelers that do Route 66 and more east coast Americans than west coast. It s a big motorcycle thing also. We saw a Mazda Club from San Diego that was taking three weeks to do the trip. The book says you should take at least 2 weeks to do it right, and that is correct. We did it in 11 days and we could have done a lot more with more time. There is a lot to see on the Route and many side trips available. We both did the trip in our C7s. I don t think I would do it in a Corvette again. To do it right, I would think you would need a jeep type vehicle or dirt bike. Continued Next Page Classical Glass Corvette Club Under Glass 9
