247 XXVIIth Conference of the ISFR 247 FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: XXVIITH CONFERENCE OF THE INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR FLUORIDE RESEARCH OCTOBER 9 12, 2007 BEIJING, CHINA INTRODUCTION Following the successful XXth Conference in Beijing in 1994, the Society is returning again to the city for its XXVIIth Conference, at the Guo Er Zhao Hotel, 9 12 October 2007. The themes for the conference will include: 1 Molecular and biological effects of fluoride on human beings, animals and plants 2 Effects of fluoride on bone, collagen, and cartilage 3 Fluoride and teeth 4 Amelioration of fluoride toxicity 5 Fluoridation of drinking water and its effect to human health 6 Fluoride analysis 7 Genetic differences in the effects of fluoride 8 Neurological disturbances of fluoride 9 Fluoride disruption of thyroid function 10 Other topics CALL FOR ABSTRACTS Papers and poster presentations are invited on subjects and issues concerning research and practical topics relating to fluoride. Papers can only be accepted and published when at least one of the authors is registered to attend the Conference. All abstracts will be published in the Conference Proceedings, one copy of which be given to each participant during registration. Depending on space limitations, it is planned to publish as many of the abstracts as possible in Fluoride after peer review. Submission of Abstracts: Conference abstracts, written in clear, concise English, with 3 5 keywords and a maximum of 20 words in the title and 350 in the text, should be submitted by E-mail as a

The abstracts should be written following, uniformly and exactly, the style of those for the XXVIth Conference, as published in Fluoride 2005;38(3):220-59, www.fluorideresearch.org,.com and.net, except that 12- point Times New Roman type should be used throughout. Indicate in bold the name of the presenter and whether an oral (platform) or poster presentation is preferred. Oral presentations are limited to 15 minutes. Presentations will be in English. Computers and projectors equipped for Powerpoint presentations will be available in all meeting rooms. Poster dimensions should not exceed 1 m in width or 1.2 m in height. Authors of poster presentations will be informed at the registration where and when their posters will be located and when they should be removed. Mounting materials will be provided. Exhibits of products and technology exhibits relating to fluoride research will be arranged at the venue. Firms interested in exhibiting are invited to apply to Dr Bing Li, Conference Co-Secretary. The ISFR is strictly a scientific research organization without any commercial ties or support. HOTEL ACCOMMODATION AND GENERAL INFORMATION Accommodation for participants and accompanying persons (spouses, guests, children) can be booked at the conference venue, the Guo Er Zhao Hotel, 6 Xizhimen South Street, Beijing 100035 (Figure), for about US$60 per room per night. The maximum number of guests per room is two. It is a government managed hotel with very good 4 star facilities and is close to the offices of the China Ministry of Health, who are supporting the conference, and the loop subway which provides train access to many attractions. 249 XXVIIth Conference of the ISFR 249 accommodations will be given in the second announcement, but the sharing of information about fluoride would be assisted if as many as possible could stay at the Guo Er Zhao Hotel. Daytime temperature in Beijing in October is about 22 28ºC. Airport transport is available from Beijing International Airport to the conference venue by taxi and coach. Further details will be given in the second announcement. Electricity voltage in China is 220 Volts, 50 Hz. Letters of Invitation will be sent on request by the conference organizers but no financial support for attendance is available. Visas are required to enter China. To obtain a visa, participants are usually required to submit a letter of invitation with the visa application form. Dr Bing Li, Conference Co- Secretary will send such a letter to each person on registration. Those living close to an Embassy of the People s Republic of China or a Consulate-General may need to apply in person while those living further away may be able to apply by post. A local travel agent will be able to advise. Completing a visa application form, supplying a letter of invitation and recent photograph of the size used in passports, and paying the appropriate fee are required. Participants are strongly advised to apply for the visa in their home country at least two months prior to departure. Further information about visas may also be obtained from the Chinese Embassy or Consulate. For Japanese citizens residing in Japan, no visa is needed if the stay in China does not exceed two weeks. Insurance for travel and health is strongly recommended and should be arranged before departure. Conference registration will be available at a desk in the lobby of the Guo Er Zhao Hotel on Tuesday 9 October 2007, 0700 1800. Participants and students will receive a conference folder with a copy of the Conference Proceedings (abstracts) and tickets for the welcome reception, lunches, and the conference banquet. Accompanying persons who register will receive tickets for the welcome reception and the conference banquet. The registration fee includes taking part in the visit to Beijing on Friday afternoon, 12 October. The currency unit in China is Renminbi (RMB) Yuan. Convertible foreign currency may be exchanged at the airport, and in hotels and banks, at the current daily exchange rate (1 US dollar is approximately equivalent to 7.8 8.0 Yuan RMB in cash).
