GENERAL INFORMATION ON SANTIAGO Santiago, a city with a population of about 6 million, is the capital of the Republic of Chile. It has a Mediterranean climate and well-defined seasons, with rainy winters with temperatures as low as 0º C (May to September) and dry summers, when daytime temperatures hover around 30º C (November to March). Relative humidity is low. In October, Santiago has a pleasant climate with warm days and cool nights, so it is recommended to bring light clothes for the day and warmer ones for the evening. Buses, taxis and five subway lines serve the city's transport needs. Taxi fares are metered and, in general, drivers do not expect tips. It is suggested that visitors drink bottled mineral water, since tap water, although drinkable, may not agree with those who are not accustomed to it. Santiago is quite a safe place. As in other big cities, however, common sense must be exercised. It is advisable to avoid going downtown at night alone or walking along poorly lit or isolated streets, and to be careful with expensive jewellery and handbags. The electric power in Chile is 220 volts, 50 cycles AC. The vicinity of ECLAC offers a variety of attractive shops and restaurants within easy walking distance. Some of them are: Cafetería Galería Animal, Emporio Armani Ristorante, La Punta and Starbucks. INTERESTING PLACES TO VISIT IN SANTIAGO Pueblito Los Dominicos Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino An attractive and picturesque Chilean handicraft village located in a historic sector close to the foot of the mountains that surround Santiago. It offers a very diverse and representative selection of the traditional and contemporary handmade objects, including furniture, textiles, paintings and crafts. The fine arts museum is a major centre for the arts in Chile. It is situated in Santiago s Parque Forestal. This museum researches and displays pre-columbian artworks and artifacts from Central and South America. It has an extensive collection of art from ancient cultures, such as the Incas, Diaguitas, and so on. It is located in downtown Santiago. Teatro Municipal de Santiago Palacio de La Moneda Plaza de Armas Barrio Bellavista Santiago s foremost theatre and opera house, where there are performances of opera, ballet and concerts. It was built in 1857 and declared a National Monument in 1974. This is the Government Palace and the only Italian neoclassical building in Latin America. It has a cultural centre that displays a range of national and international visual and audiovisual heritage. Located in the heart of Santiago, this square has been the civic centre since colonial times. The Cathedral on the square s west side is a National Monument and has an interesting museum, whose main attraction is its library containing ancient manuscripts. Other major historic buildings in Plaza de Armas are the Municipality of Santiago and the Post Office (Correo Central). This is a district with its own special identity, combining an astounding variety of handicrafts and clothing shops with a wide range of restaurants serving diverse specialties of international cuisine. Bellavista nestles between the northern bank of the Mapocho River and the bottom of San Cristóbal Hill. A stroll along its streets offers the visitor a potpourri of art galleries, theatres, lapis lazuli jewellery shops, architecture, food and parks, and the city zoo borders part of its northern boundary.
