2 Background Salow Travel (ST) is an independent bus and coach company based in Cornwall, in the Western Traffic Area. ST holds a Standard International operator licence authorising 20 vehicles. Its combined Operator Compliance Risk Score is currently in the amber band. You are the recently appointed Transport Manager for ST, having worked there for 5 years as the traffic planner. You gained your Certificate of Professional Competence in December 2016. ST operates from a freehold site on the outskirts of Truro, where, in addition to parking spaces, it has offices, a modern workshop and a travel agency. Salow Travel Fleet Number of vehicles Seating Capacity Type Average Annual Mileage (km per vehicle) 2 16 Minibus 40,000 2 25 Minicoach 50,000 1 35 Coach 50,000 5 49 Standard coach 65,000 1 49 Touring coach with driver's bunk 65,000 3 41 Bus 45,000 One of the five 49-seat standard coaches is dedicated to and liveried for Pennskol College. Company Policies All drivers must be scheduled for a 30-minute period before departing the depot each day, to allow for collecting paperwork and completing a walkround check. When working away from the depot, drivers must be scheduled for a 15-minute period for a walkround check immediately after a daily rest period. Drivers are required to take all breaks as late as legally possible and for the shortest possible time period, except when on board ferries. Driver schedules must always be compiled to enable passengers to arrive at their destination at the earliest possible time.

3 Current Work ST s current work includes private hire for local schools/colleges, companies and clubs, as well as school contracts and a bus service. Your largest customer is Pennskol College (Pennskol), which has a campus in Truro (5km from ST s depot) and another campus near Bodmin, also in Cornwall, within the Western Traffic Area. Future Work Degree course tours Pennskol has recently introduced a Town and Country Planning degree course, which will require students to travel to towns and cities in the UK. The course tutor has indicated to you that he intends to run various tours, during which students will study local planning issues. He wishes to give all students the opportunity to attend each venue and therefore intends to run various tours four times over a sixteen week period. The four tours are: Glasgow/Edinburgh ten day duration Newcastle six day duration Manchester six day duration London four day duration. In order to comply with the requirements of the planning authority hosts at each venue, each Glasgow/Edinburgh tour will depart Pennskol on a Sunday, and each London tour will depart Pennskol on a Tuesday. The other tours can depart on any day to suit ST. It will be necessary to use the one Pennskol dedicated coach for this work. Study tour to Angers A college in Angers, France, with which Pennskol has links, has offered to host a five day study tour in their area, providing accommodation and facilities for Pennskol students and free accommodation for the driver. The round trip would involve nine days in total and for costing purposes, standing costs must be based on nine days use of all resources. While based in Angers, the coach would be used on all five days, covering 1,150km. Pennskol will pay all ferry costs and road tolls direct. The group will make a visit to Roscoff Town Hall on the outward journey. During this visit the driver will not be required. The group must arrive at Roscoff Town Hall at 0730hrs and leave at 0915hrs. The course tutor will deal with passengers alighting and boarding at Roscoff Town Hall.
