Endangered Species Monitoring Project in Zululand A 4 night stay for 2 on one of our Endangered Species Monitoring Projects in Zululand (at either Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, Tembe Elephant Park, Mkhuze Game Reserve or Thanda Private Game Reserve depending on availability). Winners will join us in the day to day monitoring efforts for Painted Dog, Black Rhino, Vultures or Cheetahs at these different parks. Participants will be expected to join in on the work we do by jumping on the back of a bakkie and heading into parts of the reserves visitors never get a chance to see! Valid for 6 months from 4 th October 2013. The monitoring projects will take place in Zululand at one of the following reserves: Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, Tembe Elephant Park, Mkhuze Game Reserve or Thanda Private Game Reserve. You will need to make your own travel arrangements to one of the reserves. Accommodation The accommodation is very rustic, but comfortable with hot water and ablutions. Meals and beverages Food will be provided but participants will be expected to cook for themselves.
Rhino monitoring in the Manketti Game Reserve Participation for four people for four nights As part of the ongoing environmental management on the Manketti Game Reserve, the population of white and black rhinoceros are frequently monitored by the research and ranger staff. Data is recorded in order to remain updated about the range and distribution, numbers, births and mortalities, condition and welfare, security and to determine the necessity of off-takes. You will join the monitoring team by vehicle and on foot in tracking, sighting and assessing as many rhino as possible in the survey period. You may be requested to assist in photographing each sighted rhino and identifying them according to known markers. Should there be camera trapping at designated points during the survey, you will assist in collecting the data and re-setting the camera traps. Lastly you will also assist in capturing data and get some insights as to how this data is applied in the management of the rhino population. This offer is valid for a twelve-month period starting 4 October 2013 and ending 5 October 2014. Exact dates of participation must be arranged directly with the reserve management staff in order to coincide with the regular monitoring program and is subject to availability. Please contact the reserve Research and Monitoring Officer on the details provided to make these arrangements. The Manketti Game Reserve is a unique 16 000 hectare conservation area, owned by Exxaro Resources and situated around the Grootegeluk Coal Mine in the Lephalale area. You will have to get to the Manketti Game Reserve at Lephalale with your own transport. Should you wish to fly into Lephalale with the regular scheduled charters, transfers can be arranged at a nominal fee. Accommodation Accommodation will be provided in the rustic safari-type Manketti Tented Camp on the reserve. The camp provides all bedding, linen and bathroom facilities.
Meals and beverages You will have to cater for your own meals. A fully equipped kitchen will be available. Snacks and nonalcoholic drinks will be provided while out monitoring during the day. Requirements: All participants must be over the age of 16 years. A fair level of fitness is required as a lot of time will be spent on foot tracking the rhino. If you suffer of any medical conditions, please make the necessary provisions and bring this under the attention of the monitoring staff. You will need comfortable, neutral coloured (olive-green is best) bush clothing that will protect you from the sun and the environment. Slacks are preferred in order to protect your legs from branches. Ensure that you have comfortable hiking boots or shoes. A hat is essential. Bring some warm clothing for night-observations and evenings around the campfire. Binoculars and cameras is a must! Provide your own alcoholic drinks. Each participant will be expected to sign an indemnity against any loss, damage or injury incurred due to their participation.
Pafuri Walking Trail Three-night, four-day Pafuri Walking Trail for 2 adults Pafuri Walking Trail is a walking trail in the spectacular, private Makuleke Concession of the northern Kruger National Park. It is perhaps the best area for walking in the entire Park and is blessed not only with exceptional biodiversity but also spectacular scenery, seasonally high densities of many large mammal species, a feeling of wilderness and remoteness, and a sense of history.
