The Australian Inland Mission Nursing ome was rebuilt in the early 199s and now houses the Innamincka Regional Reserve park headquarters and information centre. (approx. population ) A few kilometres over the Queensland border, the town had its origin in a store built in 188 by Robert Frew. e suggested the name Birdsville because of the variety of bird life in the area. By 1895 the population numbered 7. Today, with a much reduced population, the town has become an Australian icon, and each year in September thousands flock to the Birdsville race meeting. COUNTRY TRAVERSED A mixture of barren gibber plains and dune fields. Vivid red dunes can be seen from the road, south east of Cordillo Downs. Formed gravel and graded earth. Very rocky sections and sandy patches. SM3 9
