JAN/FEB/MAR www.nmbmwcca.org Annual Karl H. Fox Memorial Fall Tour to Las Vegas (NM that is!) Brings Out Largest Ever Turnout! By Dan Flegel On October 11 th and despite the cold miserable weather, approximately 40 participants took part in the Annual Karl H. Fox Memorial Fall Tour to Las Vegas (NM). The tour started from the Santa Fe BMW dealership with a record breaking 22 BMWs and 1 (cold) motorcyclist. The BMW procession traveled up I-25 to Las Vegas where Jon van Arsdel led the group through the town and toward El Porvenir to view the fall colors in the canyons of the Santa Fe National Forest. As we made our drive through the narrow road of Route 65, a mountain peak in the distance called Hermit s Peak would poke through the color changing foliage. The peak was originally named by the Spanish as El Cerro del Tecolote (The Hill of the Owl), but it was later changed to Hermit s Peak after a religious Italian around the 1800s took refuge in a cave dwelling near the crest. The Italian constructed religious trinkets that he would trade for food in the town of old Las Vegas. The locals regard the Italian as a Holy man and many of the town s people would hike to his cave for his blessings. Sometime in the 1860s, locals had not heard or seen the Holy man and a group of locals hiked to the cave only to find him shot with arrows by Indians. A U-turn made near El Porvenir took us to our next stop at the United World College located in Montezuma, NM. A historian waiting for us provided a walking tour of the college. The Castle as it is often referred, was erected in 1880s in Victorian style architecture. It was constructed near the hot springs and for many years served as a luxury hotel. Several other building existed on or near the same site and had burnt down or were destroyed by raging monsoon floodwaters of the Gallinas creek. (See Page 3) UNDER THE HOOD Karl H. President s Message by Jon van Arsdel January 2010 Winter is here. As I write this (December), it is cold and snowy for a lot of New México. The meteorologists are predicting an El Niño winter, so we may get a lot of snow this year. My BMW X3 is ready for the challenge. Tech tip #380: BMW X-Drive works well in the snow and ice. This past quarter, we had the Fall Tour, a membership meeting, and a holiday party. The Annual Karl H. Fox Memorial Fall Tour was on Sunday, October 11, 2009. On the previous day (Saturday) a cold front had moved into eastern New México making temperatures very cold east of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. We were therefore thrilled to have 22 BMW automobiles and one BMW motorcycle come out for the tour. We toured the Sangre de Cristos to Las Vegas (NM) and went north through gorgeous Cañón de Gallinas. As the skies slowly cleared off, the fall colors were absolutely gorgeous; and the temperatures rose accordingly. We were also able to tour the Montezuma Castle, and the United World College. Thank you to Nina Márquez Johns for being a great tour guide! We ended with brunch at the Plaza Hotel, in downtown Las Vegas. Thank you to Daniel Flegel for arranging and leading the tour. See Daniel s articles and photos in this newsletter. We had a general membership meeting and dinner on November 19. It was a social event and planning session. On December 9, we had our first holiday party at Sandía BMW. Many members stopped by to socialize. We had food, movies, and fabulous BMW s on display. Thank you to Bob Kauffman for arranging the party, and thank you to Jeff Cline and Jim Johnson for hosting the party. Tech tip #381: BMW heated seats work well in the snow and ice. will be the host, along with some of his excellent technical staff. He is planning to have a couple of the new hybrid BMW s on display. Reminder: Officer elections for the New México Chapter of the BMW CCA will coincide with the Sandía tech session. Please come and vote for (or against) your favorite candidate. Better yet, run for an office. The February 11 th (Thursday) tech session will be at Southwest Collision Craftsmen. Owner Manny Córdova will be the host, at his BMW-certified body shop. March 11 th (Thursday) will be a general membership meeting. We will have more details available on the web as we get closer to the date. As is our normal custom, food is included in club events. Tech tip #382: All season tires with good tread work well in the snow and ice (do we sense a theme developing here?). Complaint. I continue to be have driveability problems due to ethanol in the fuel in my BMW (and other) vehicles. Ethanol seems to be the problem. Although the gasoline sold here (Albuquerque) is supposed to be no more than 10% ethanol, I am told it is often closer to 20%. I have heard other fuelrelated complaints from local club members. The New México chapter of the BMW CCA is always looking for event leaders, and also officers for the board of directors. If you are interested, please notify someone on the current BoD. As always, watch your email for changes and updates to the events. You can also check www.nmbmwcca.org for additional information. I hope to see each of you soon! Jon van Arsdel el Presidente For the first quarter of 2010, we have scheduled two tech sessions and a membership meeting. The January 13, 2010 (Wednesday) tech session will be at Sandía BMW. Service Director Jeff Cline 2

(From Page 1) Documented records indicate that famous guest from around the world such as Theodore Roosevelt, Ulysses Grant, and Emperor Hirohito to name a few stayed at this resort. After many years of neglect and changing ownership, the castle was finally renovated and today it serves as a fully functioning classroom, cafeteria, meeting and recreational rooms for the students of the college. On the way back, the BMW procession stopped at Welcome Our New Members! The hotel architecture and area buildings resemble the old west movies props, with high storefront facades. The Plaza in front of the Hotel today has a gazebo and a fence would surround the plaza for cattlemen to lock up their cattle and spend the night in area hotels. A windmill once stood at one end of the Plaza was not only used for irrigation purposes, but historically it was used for the hanging of criminals. While Bruch was being made, some of JENNIFER STRASSER 2009 335xi FRANCES SUCHOCKI 2006 X5 JAMES WOOD 2008 535 After our social gathering, many of us at the table were discussing our day s adventures of what they had seen or liked. If any of you have some recommendations for the upcoming tour in the spring, or would like to lead it, send an email to me at dflegel@att.net. See you next time! the club members took a guided tour of the Plaza Hotel. 3

New Mexico Chapter Hosts First Holiday Gathering By Bill Kurey The Chapter held a holiday social gathering on December 9, 2009 at the Sandia BMW and Mini dealership. Chapter Vice President Bob Kaufman made the arrangements for the holiday themed snacks and BMW video entertainment. Several new BMWs and Minis were available for up close inspection and perusal - just in time for any last minute additions to Santa s gift list! Enjoy the collage of pictures from this year s event and make sure you plan to attend next year s gathering! 4
