Monday July 02 Alex Arbuthnot Our Region Our Future Lakeside Club Guest Speaker Alex Arbuthnot addresses the Club

President s Announcements: Fletcher Jack Hodge My new grandson born 15th June at Geelong Third grandchild first boy Regards Jeanette Changeovers this week: Traralgon, Maffra. See Jeanette if you would like to go and keep her company. July 16, President s night followed by a board meeting August 04, Bairnsdale s 80 th Birthday. See Mike if interested. September 27, DG Janne visit. Chair: Philip Davis Sergeant: Mike Smith Chairman Philip introduced our Guest Speaker Alex Arbuthnot who Philip described as an old friend with whom he had shared many a platform and whom he admired but did not always agree with. Alex was introduced as having a long history in Primary Industry and as a farmer in Nambrok for 47 years. He was described as an advocate for good land practices and as having had a very active career in land management. He is very involved in regional, State and National bodies.

The following are Alex s notes for his presentation which touch on some politically controversial areas, especially relevant to Sale and the Gippsland area. There is plenty of room for debate here and it would be good to hear another speaker present from a different perspective and try to reach consensus to allow Sale and Gippsland to move forward to a better future. (Adrian take note!). Members will naturally draw their own conclusions from the notes below and I think we need further input to flesh out ideas towards a positive outcome. We Love Gippsland Our Region Our Future Alex Arbuthnot. July 2, 2018. Sale Rotary Dinner. Speech has 3 sectors. Gippsland s Natural resources. 2. Vision 3. Where to and what can we do? 1. Gippsland s Natural Resources - Beaches, Mountains, our Parks, Gippsland Lakes surely the best group of lakes in Australia! - Gippsland Hills - rolling Strzelecki s and our rich farm lands - Food, our wine, cheese & dairy products. - Gippsland produces 22% of Australia s milk! - Brown coal 2 nd largest resource in the world - Gas 50 years Esso Exxon in Sale Wealth - Gippsland highest regional GRP in the State $16 Billion Half is agribusiness & closer to $10 B. 2. A Vision We love Gippsland - borrowed that from Emma Germano (I love Farms) Energy we now generate 90 % of the State s electricity. In 10 years; 20 years we must continue with that statistic. And of course, the mix will change. - We have the infrastructure power lines, coal (cleaner tech), gas - And we must supply power that is reliable and at low cost - Use Innovation Centre to develop new tech that is clean and lead the world ( as Sir John Monash did ) - Gas fields developed ( on shore ) - Gipps Oil Gina Rhinehart/ Lakes Oil - Irrigation extended more water storages, dams, wetlands (co use), aquifer. note with CSG mining av. CSG bore in Queensland produces 2 ml of water a month. If exploration was successful in Longford / Seaspray area we were planning a new irrigation scheme. - Value adding agribusiness Covina s, Bulmer s. Ace Dairies, Wigg s 12,000 cows- the way of tomorrow. agri tourism (wine. Food) - International tourism market our region - International Investors overwhelmed with our resources. - Value add Gippsland Food with the Landcare Brand (BMP incl GHG / C neutral). Gipps to be the 1st region in Australia. Andrew Robb former Minister for Trade. Understood the value of the Landcare brand. - Value added timber markets tourism! - People market our region welcome international visitors - capturing a % of the China visitor market. (1 million Chinese visited Aust. spending $13 Billion) but 100 million Chinese tourists leave China every year 3. How do we go forward! - Energy develop a Gippsland Regional Energy Plan.. owned by Gippslanders, (all including Environmentalist s/ Landcare), bipartisan!. Perhaps a Wellington Shire Plan!. deliver low cost reliable energy!. attract new industry hydrogen production, Mineral Sands, new gas fields Inc Wealth set a growth target, financial/ People / houses! 10 story Units / 1000-person Conf Centre! - Transport / roads /rail/ international Airport!

National Parks they are a regional asset! let s make them attractive to visitors.. rate levy weeds, better roads / improved fire protection.. perhaps charge Parks Vic rates! - We must facilitate change Harold Mitchell leader Quote Australia must change. - Threats complacency! Social license issues. And hope the Book of History is wrong. We must build a Rotary Vision, a C4W vision It s Dry July! P.E. Chairman Philip chats with Alex whilst Pres. Jeanette enjoys the hospitality.

An invitation from St Paul s to anyone interested Mike seeks inspiration for some good fines.
