History of the Fort Sutter Chapter s National Road Runs Pictures and story provided by Rich Ostrander, Fort Sutter Club Historian All of the National Road Runs began in Colorado in 1987 with the DJ run loosely copied from a run that some of the eastern AMCA members attended in South Africa in 1986. Later in 1987 members of the Fort Sutter Chapter, along with several SoCal Chapter members, ran a two day test run based in South Lake Tahoe to see if it was practical to host a National Road Run in Lake Tahoe, like the one in Colorado in 1989. This year (2017) will be our Chapter's ninth National Road Run. For the 1989,1992 and 1995 Road Runs all were based in South Lake Tahoe. In 1999 we moved to the North Shore, but returned in 2003 and 2006 to the South side. In 2013, it was decided to move down from Lake Tahoe so we could show off our rich heritage here in the River City. The run included day rides up the Cache Creek Canyon, Hwy 49 through the Sierra Foothills gold country, and down through the Delta on Hwy 160 along the Sacramento river. For 2017 we once again will return to the South Shore of Lake Tahoe. Usually, It s one day around the North side over Mt. Rose, on to Virginia City, then back through Carson City. Another day is through the desert, on the east side of the Sierra, with a stop in Bridgeport, then back over Monitor Pass and then through Markleeville. Sometimes the last day takes us to Bear Valley, but we ll just have to see what the planning crew has up their sleeves. Whatever it is, it will include scenic vistas and roads to delight anyone on a pair of vintage wheels. So try and make it if you ve never had the chance. Old friends, new friends, good food, good times, great machines, the whole ball of wax. 1987 Trial run around Lake Tahoe Page 4
