Greetings, Welcome to the tenth issue of the newsletter from your travel friends at UW-Madison Continuing Studies. So far, 2014 has turned out even better than we hoped! We had an absolutely wonderful journey to Italy that took us from Sorrento, up through Florence, down to Siena and culminated in Rome! I can t think of many better ways to spend two weeks than enjoying all that Italy has to offer, so we re going to try to get back there sooner rather than later. We ve also had a great weekend trip to Washington, D.C., and another outstanding visit to Charleston, SC, for Spoleto Festival, so things are rocking along nicely! If you re itching to get away before 2014 fades into the past, we still have some outstanding travel opportunities for you! By the time you read this we will have already returned from the Santa Fe Opera and are probably still on safari in southern Tanzania, but there s still time to join us for our annual visit to the Shaw Festival and, even better, we re taking our first visit to India in November, so let us know if you want to join us! This year is setting a pretty high standard, but 2015 looks to be its equal. In the spring we return to Peru; in April we take a trip focusing on the Civil War; of course we ll go back to Spoleto Festival (because it s just too good to miss); we return once more to the incomparable parks of Northern Tanzania for another life-altering safari; we take our annual trip to Canada for the Shaw Festival and, in the fall, we make our long-awaited journey to the wilds of Patagonia! We ll celebrate the end of this fabulous year with our annual Holiday Weekend in New York City! Whew! Remember: you don t have to wait for the brochure to sign up for a trip. There is a universal registration form at the back of this newsletter that you can use to register and/or lock in space for any of our upcoming trips. Fill out the registration form that you re holding right now and save your space on the trip of your choice. As always, thank you very much for the support that you have shown this program over the years. We are humbled by your enthusiasm for what we do, and are extremely proud to be able to offer you these opportunities. Thank you. I look forward to traveling with you soon. Sincerely, Doug Whittle Director of Educational Travel UW-Madison Continuing Studies 608-263-7787 dwhittle@dcs.wisc.edu uwtravel.org www.facebook.com/uweducationaltravel

There s still time to join us for this year s Testimonials Educational travel with the UW has opened a whole new world for me. I have been able to visit places I never dreamed I would go and never would ve tried on my own. I have studied many cultures in the classroom setting, but nothing compares to experiencing it firsthand. I don t think it could have been planned any better. The trip went far beyond any expectations. Shaw Festival Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Sept 26-29, 2014 Price $1,699 One of North America s finest repertory companies resides in one of North America s most beautiful towns and the result is the incomparable Shaw Festival. Our annual trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake is one of the highlights of our calendar, and we d love to have you join us! This year the entire group attends Sean O Casey s classic Juno and the Paycock; Philip Barry s romantic comedy, The Philadelphia Story, and the musical Cabaret! As we always do, we re letting you choose your other two plays. This year you can decide between Hankin s The Charity that Began at Home: A Comedy for Philanthropists and When We Are Married, by J.B. Priestley. Your other choice is between Shaw s comedy The Philanderer or his classic Arms and The Man. This year s optional lunchtime play is A Lovely Sunday for Creve Coeur by Tennessee Williams. You also visit Niagara Falls on your way into Canada; you attend our traditional Saturday morning educational seminar; and you enjoy a delightful meal with cast members. If you re looking for a weekend of outstanding theater and education then you can t do any better than the Shaw Festival! and India! Nov 6-21, 2014 Price: $6,599 includes air One of the last major destinations remaining on our bucket list, we are finally taking a trip to India! It is hard to overstate the beauty, intensity, sights, sounds, aromas, flavors, and sheer awe that comes with a journey to one of the world s most fascinating and complex societies, so I won t even try. We ll visit the Golden Triangle this time, and save the rest of the subcontinent for future trips. We ll begin in the bustling heart of the country, Delhi, we then move on to Varanasi, before flying to Khajuraho. From there we ll travel to Agra to visit the Taj Mahal, then head west towards the desert to see the architectural wonders of Jaipur and Jodhpur. Hurry. Time and space are running out!

2015 Domestic Trips The Civil War April 17-23, 2015 $1,999 plus air Join us as we follow in the footsteps of John Brown, Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, George Meade, Joe Hooker, U.S. Grant, and many other men who shaped this extraordinary conflict. Expertly guided visits to Manassas, Harper s Ferry, Antietam, Gettysburg, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, Pamplin Historical Park, and Appomattox will bring this seminal event in American history to life in a way that you may have never imagined possible. This is going to be a powerful educational experience of the highest order. We re ready to sign you up! Spoleto Festival USA Charleston, SC 2015 Dates TBD Price TBD Widely acknowledged as the premier performing arts festival in the country, this trip has become very popular due to the outstanding quality of the performances and the warm and gracious welcome that we always receive in Charleston. New York City November 2015 2015 Dates TBD Price TBD Next year we return to the Big Apple for another weekend of world-class performances. We ll probably go to a jazz club, an opera, a symphony, one or two museums and still have plenty of time to shop and do the touristy things that everyone wants to do in New York. This is always a great weekend and we d love to have you join us next year. Details should be available no later than June! 2015 International Trips All of our international trips include roundtrip airfare! Peru March 1-16, 2015 Price $7,499 There are few places on earth that possess more awe-inspiring sites than Peru. You will tread the cobbled streets of Lima to learn the history and culture of the native peoples and of their conquest by the Spaniards; explore beautiful Arequipa; and delve into the archaeological capital of the Americas: Cuzco. Descend into the second-deepest landform on earth in Colca Canyon; sail upon Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable body of water in the world to visit the Uros people on their man-made reed islands; and venture into Peru s Sacred Valley to visit one of the world s truly wondrous places: Machu Picchu. This extraordinary journey concludes with a three-hour trip by motorized canoe down the Rio Tambopata to a jungle lodge deep in Amazonia for three days of excursions in this uniquely wild and verdant landscape. There are many amazing countries on our planet. Peru may be the most amazing of all. Sign up NOW!
