AVSP 7 Summer 2016 Sectin 5: Visitr Prfile - Destinatins and Activities

Destinatins The fllwing pages shw the regins and cmmunities visited by Alaska visitrs, including verall visitatin (day r vernight), vernight visitatin, and the average number f nights spent in each lcatin (based t thse wh vernighted in each lcatin). The fllwing map, als used in Alaska s statewide marketing prgrams, shws hw the regins are defined. The Inside Passage regin is referred t as Sutheast fr this reprt. Survey results fr visitrs t specific regins and cmmunities are prvided in Sectins 11-14. There were several imprvements t the way destinatin data was captured in AVSP 7: Nine lcatins were added t the survey instrument: Chicken, Cldft, Cpper Center, Crdva, Delta Junctin, Gustavus, Healy, Ktzebue, and Other Kenai Peninsula (which included Cper Landing, Hpe, Ninilchik, Sterling, and any ther Kenai Peninsula cmmunities). These additins were based n results frm the 2011 survey. Additinally, a separate cde was added in the data prcessing phase fr Other Mat-Su due t the frequency f visitatin. Over 150 lcatins that fell int the ther categry in 2006 and 2011 were captured in reginal data, allwing fr mre precise reginal visitatin estimates. Regins Visited The fllwing charts shws regins visited, with day and vernight visits cmbined. Reginal visitatin rates by transprtatin market is prvided alng with cmmunity visitatin in Table 5.1. Sutheast is the mst-visited regin, capturing 67 percent f the market, fllwed by Suthcentral (52 percent), Interir (29 percent), Suthwest (4 percent), and Far Nrth (2 percent). Reginal visitatin rates fr the verall market have changed nly slightly ver the last decade. Sutheast s visitatin rate drpped frm 71 percent in 2006 t 68 percent in 2011, then t 67 percent in 2016. Suthcentral s visitatin rate fell frm 56 percent in 2006 and 2011 t 52 percent in 2016. The Interir s visitatin rate likewise fell, frm 33 percent in 2006 and 2011 t 29 percent in 2016. Suthwest visitatin stayed at 4 percent fr bth 2011 and 2016, while Far Nrth visitatin stayed at 2 percent. Changes by transprtatin market were mre prnunced, and are discussed in the fllwing sectin. Destinatins Visited The chart n the fllwing page shws the tp 25 Alaska destinatins visited, based t all visitrs, with day and vernight visits cmbined. The tp 10 destinatins visited (day r vernight) in 2016 include: Juneau (61 percent), Ketchikan (58 percent), Skagway (48 percent), Anchrage (47 percent), Glacier Bay Natinal Park (29 percent), Seward (23 percent), Denali Natinal Park (23 percent), Fairbanks (17 percent), Hnah/Icy Strait Pint (13 percent), and Talkeetna (11 percent). Visitatin rates changed between 2011 and 2016 fr several cmmunities. Changes f 3 percent r mre ccurred fr the fllwing cmmunities. Glacier Bay Natinal Park increased frm 24 t 29 percent. Denali Natinal Park fell frm 28 t 23 percent. Fairbanks fell frm 21 t 17 percent. Hnah/Icy Strait Pint increased frm 8 t 13 percent. Whittier fell frm 14 t 10 percent. Other Kenai increased frm 4 t 7 percent. Kenai/Sldtna fell frm 10 t 7 percent. These changes are better understd in terms f transprtatin market, discussed n the fllwing pages. Cmmunities nt included in the chart n the fllwing page are: Healy (visited by 2 percent); Petersburg Gustavus, Cldft, Nme, Wrangell, Chicken, and Cpper Center (each visited by 1 percent); and Nme, Crdva, and Ktzebue (each visited by less than 1 percent). Overall visitatin t each f the cmmunities either was nt measured in previus years, r did nt change by mre than 1 percent. These cmmunities are included in the table shwing results by transprtatin market. AVSP 7 Sectin 5: Visitr Prfile - Destinatins and Activities McDwell Grup Page 5-3

Transprtatin Market AIR VISITORS In terms f regins, air visitrs were mst likely t visit Suthcentral at 78 percent, fllwed by Interir at 37 percent, Sutheast at 19 percent, Suthwest at 9 percent, and Far Nrth at 3 percent. Suthcentral visitatin has remained fairly cnsistent in air visitatin rates ver the last decade, frm 79 percent in 2006, t 80 percent in 2011, t 78 percent in 2016. Mst Suthcentral cmmunities shwed a small dwnturn in air visitatin rates between 2011 and 2016. Fr example, the rate f air visitrs traveling t the Kenai Peninsula went frm 45 t 44 percent; and Palmer/Wasilla went frm 21 t 19 percent. (Visitr vlume estimates will reflect cmmunity visitatin rates and grwth in the verall air market.) The mre dramatic decrease fr Kenai/Sldtna (frm 22 t 15 percent) is at least in part attributable t the additin f the ther Kenai Peninsula cde n the survey in 2016. Thse visiting Other Kenai destinatins increased frm 9 t 15 percent. The large dwnturn in the percentage f peple visiting ther Suthcentral (frm 19 t 5 percent) is largely attributable t the increase in the number f cded destinatins: Other Kenai Peninsula, Other Mat-Su, and Crdva. Sutheast visitatin drpped slightly frm 20 t 19 percent. Hwever, Juneau visitatin increased frm 8 t 10 percent. Cntributing t grwth is Delta Air s recent reinstatement f service in the regin. Glacier Bay Natinal Park decreased frm 5 t 2 percent. This drp is likely in part attributable t the additin f Gustavus t the survey; Gustavus drew 2 percent f all air visitrs. Interir visitatin by air visitrs was fairly cnsistent at 37 percent 2006, 36 percent in 2011, and 37 percent in 2016. Likewise, visitatin t Denali Natinal Park was steady at 26 percent in 2006, 25 percent in 2011, and 26 percent in 2016. Fairbanks visitatin shwed nly small changes, frm 22 percent in 2006, t 20 percent in 2011, t 21 percent in 2016. Healy, Delta Junctin, Cpper Center, and Chicken were new destinatins cded in 2016, capturing 4 percent, 3 percent, 2 percent, and 1 percent f the air market, respectively. These added cdes help explain the decrease in Other Interir visitatin, frm 7 percent in 2011 t 3 percent in 2016. Suthwest visitatin by air visitrs increased frm 7 percent in 2011 t 9 percent in 2016. Far Nrth visitatin remained at 3 percent. Nme visitatin remained at 1 percent. New (cded) cmmunities Cldft and Ktzebue captured 1 percent and <1 percent f the air market, respectively. CRUISE MARKET Cruise visitrs were mst likely t visit Sutheast (100 percent), fllwed by Suthcentral (34 percent), and Interir (21 percent). Just 1 percent visited Suthwest and less than 1 percent visited the Far Nrth. AVSP 7 Sectin 5: Visitr Prfile - Destinatins and Activities McDwell Grup Page 5-5

Cruise visitatin t prts clsely reflected CLAA data. Fr example, 99 percent f cruise passengers reprted visiting Juneau, cmpared t 99 percent f CLAA passengers. Other prt cmparisns include: Skagway at 81 percent AVSP vs. 80 percent CLAA; Glacier Bay at 48 percent fr bth surces; Seward at 18 percent AVSP vs. 17 percent CLAA, and Sitka at 13 percent AVSP vs. 12 percent CLAA. A larger difference is apparent fr Icy Strait Pint: 22 percent f passengers reprted visiting, versus 16 percent in CLAA data. Passengers may be reprting transiting Icy Strait via cruise ships and tur vessels, as it is a ppular site fr whale watching. Ketchikan was slightly verreprted at 97 percent, cmpared t 92 percent in CLAA data, partially attributable t Ketchikan being the survey site fr nearly all visitrs exiting Alaska via cruise ship. Whittier was underreprted at 8 percent, cmpared t 13 percent in CLAA data. Sme passengers wh embarked r disembarked their ship may nt have been aware f the cmmunity name r spent t little time in prt t cnsider it a visited destinatin. Cruise passenger visitatin t Sutheast cmmunities has shifted smewhat ver the last decade, reflecting ship itinerary changes. Mst changes were within 1 t 3 percent. The increase in Glacier Bay visitatin (frm 37 t 49 percent) is due t visitatin being underreprted in the 2011 survey frm a narrw interpretatin f visitatin by sme field staff. Cnsistent training and fielding in 2016 resulted in AVSP 7 data crrespnding with CLAA data. Cruise passenger visitatin t the Interir drpped frm 30 t 21 percent between 2011 and 2016, reflecting lwer visitatin t Denali (frm 29 t 20 percent) and Fairbanks (frm 21 t 12 percent). There are several factrs influencing this decline. Fewer crss-gulf itineraries in relatin t rund-trip itineraries limits pprtunities fr land turs r traveling t the Interir independently. Cruise lines have intrduced mre variety in land tur itineraries, including sme packages that d nt include Fairbanks. Cruise passenger visitatin t Suthwest shifted frm 2 percent in 2011 t 1 percent in 2016, while Far Nrth visitatin fell very slightly frm 1 percent t less than 1 percent. HIGHWAY/FERRY MARKET Highway/ferry visitrs were mst likely t visit Interir (67 percent), fllwed by Suthcentral (56 percent), and Sutheast (49 percent). Six percent visited the Far Nrth, and 1 percent visited Suthwest. Highway/ferry visitrs shwed mre dramatic changes than the ther tw transprtatin markets, with mst f the change attributable t the dwnturn in the ferry market, and upturn in the highway market. Sutheast visitatin fell frm 62 and 63 percent in 2006 and 2011 t 49 percent in 2016. Visitatin t varius cmmunities in Sutheast fell similarly between 2011 and 2016: frm 41 t 30 percent in Skagway; frm 19 t 9 percent in Juneau; and frm 17 t 10 percent in Ketchikan. Interir visitatin by highway/ferry visitrs increased frm 58 t 67 percent. AVSP 7 Sectin 5: Visitr Prfile - Destinatins and Activities McDwell Grup Page 5-6

Overnight Destinatins The fllwing charts and table shw where visitrs vernighted. The majr factr affecting vernight versus verall visitatin is the cruise market: cruise passengers rarely vernight in prt cmmunities, leading t big differences between verall and vernight visitatin fr that market and cnsequently, fr the verall market. While Sutheast was the mst cmmnly visited regin in terms f verall visitatin (67 percent), nly 10 percent f visitrs vernighted there. Other regins rates f verall and vernight visitatin are much clser. Suthcentral has an verall rate f visitatin f 52 percent, and an vernight visitatin rate f 44 percent. Interir has an verall rate f 29 percent, cmpared t 27 percent vernighting. Suthwest s verall rate f 4 percent is higher than the vernight rate f 3 percent. The difference is likely attributable t cruise ship calls at Kdiak and Dutch Harbr, and day turs ut f the Suthcentral regin featuring flightseeing and bear viewing. The Far Nrth s vernight visitatin rate f 1 percent is lwer than their verall rate f 2 percent, likely related t day turs t the Arctic Circle, ften perated ut f the Interir regin. The chart n the fllwing page shws vernight destinatin rates, fr cmmunities with a visitatin rate f mre than 1 percent. Cmmunities with vernight rates f 1 percent r less are included in the Transprtatin Market table. Differences in vernight visitatin ver the last decade are linked t verall visitatin, discussed previusly. Activities Visitrs were shwn a list f activities and asked which they participated in while in Alaska. A few changes were made t the survey instrument: ht springs was added as a new cde; crab feed was added t the salmn bake activity; and visiting friends/family was remved, as that activity is adequately captured in the trip purpse questin. The results t this questin based t all visitrs are presented in tabular (rather than chart) frmat due t the large number f activities, as well as multiple subgrupings Results t this questin were based nly t intercept respndents, rather than cmbined nline and intercept, as mst ther survey results are shwn. Participatin rates fr certain activities differed smewhat between intercept and nline respndents. These activities tended t be thse that benefited frm a surveyr s guidance, such as city/sightseeing turs. Previus AVSP results have likewise been mdified frm previus reprts in rder t ensure cmparability f data. The mst cmmn activities were shpping (75 percent), wildlife viewing (45 percent), day cruises (39 percent), hiking/nature walk (34 percent), city/sightseeing turs (31 percent), museums (22 percent), and White Pass/Yukn Rute train (22 percent). Participatin rates decreased fr sme activities. The mre prnunced decreases included the fllwing: Wildlife viewing fell frm 56 percent in 2006, t 48 percent in 2011, t 45 percent in 2016. City/sightseeing turs fell frm 44 percent in 2006, t 35 percent in 2011, t 31 percent in 2016. Gld panning/mine tur fell frm 15 percent in 2006, t 12 percent in 2011, t 9 percent in 2016. Fishing fell frm 20 percent in 2006, t 19 percent in 2011, t 16 percent in 2016. Birdwatching fell frm 19 percent in 2006, t 11 percent in 2011, t 9 percent in 2016. There were a few increases in participatin rates. Shpping grew frm 71 percent in 2006, t 72 percent in 2011, t 75 percent in 2016. Day cruises grew frm 36 percent in 2011 t 39 percent in 2016. Hiking/nature walk grew frm 28 percent in 2011 t 34 percent in 2016. Dgsledding grew frm 7 percent in 2006, t 8 percent in 2011, t 11 percent in 2016.
