Adventure Options You have a number of optional adventure activities to choose from on your Antarctic Explorer expedition. These options vary by departure, are all subject to availability and fill up quickly, so be sure to book yours early. KAYAKING Imagine gliding along the surface of a bay in the presence of icebergs and glaciers! Our kayaking adventures are the best way to feel at one with the sea. Taken in small groups of 10-16 people, multiple times per voyage, kayaking adventures are only done during calm weather conditions. We recommend you to have some prior kayaking experience, including the capability to do a wet exit. The kayaking adventure option is open to all levels of experience. However, we advise that kayaking in polar waters is not an activity for first-time guests. Beginners interested in kayaking, should first take an introductory kayaking course prior to their voyage. More information about your Adventure Options, including physical requirements and cost of each option, is available by contacting your Polar Travel Adviser. Itinerary SANTIAGO DAY 1 Punta Arenas, Chile Your journey begins in Punta Arenas. This port city is situated at the southern tip of Chile, on the north bank of the Strait of Magellan. Once a Chilean penal colony, Punta Arenas has transformed into a vibrant city offering you plenty of attractions to explore including historic sites and museums. Explore the city by day, and then join us for an evening dinner to meet your fellow Antarctic fliers. Ushuaia Fly Cruise Start Point End Point DAY 2 Embarkation Day Today you board your chartered flight to Antarctica. The journey over the Drake Passage will take you less than four hours, whereas our ship-based travelers take two days to make the journey by sea. Your first glimpse of Antarctica comes into view shortly before the aircraft descends towards King George Island hope for clear skies so you can appreciate the vastness of this great continent! You will have some free time to photograph parts of the island and stretch your legs before joining the ship. Once aboard, you ll have experienced your first trip in a Zodiac and begin your exploration of the Antarctic region. DAYS 3 TO 6 Antarctic Peninsula & South Shetland Islands You ll get a sense that you ve arrived on a new planet during the start of your Antarctic voyage, as the pristine nature and dramatic environments are Lemaire Channel Anvers Island like nothing else on earth. From the vessel you can watch whales swim and feed in the nutrient-rich waters and spot penguins porpoising in the water and jumping aboard ice floes. Just as amazing as the wildlife are the towering snow-covered mountains and massive glaciers of the Peninsula, which will be your playground for the next four days. Every Zodiac excursion and landing presents new sights, sounds and smells. Some landings may be as relaxing as sitting on a beach, taking photographs of curious gentoo penguins. Other landings may provide exhilarating Paradise Harbour King George Island Paulet Island panoramic views of the Antarctic continent by hiking atop a hill. Perhaps you ll catch a calving glacier crumbling into the sea at Petermann Island, or take a Zodiac cruise in search of fur and elephant seals around Pleneau Island. Even common travel experiences like mailing a postcard take on an extra level of excitement in Antarctica. While weather and sea conditions determine which landings we can make, your Expedition Team will ensure that each day of your Antarctic adventure leaves a lasting impression. DAYS 7 TO 9 At Sea Spend your days at sea enjoying the view from the deck, or taking in presentations by the expedition team. DAYS 10 TO 13 South Georgia With a rich history of exploration in the Antarctic, South Georgia has many stories to tell. You ll learn that the original inhabitants here arrived to hunt whales and fur and elephant seals to perilously low levels. Thankfully populations have rebounded and whaling and sealing ceases to exist today. You will also see many remnants of these days gone by; including several whaling stations. Perhaps the most historic and famous site on the island is the grave of the great explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton. You can visit his grave at the settlement of Grytviken, which is also home to a museum, small gift shop, church and an active scientific research station. After that history lesson, you ll surely be ready for some wildlife encounters. South Georgia is sometimes called the Galapagos of the Poles as it is home to a captivating number of inquisitive and curious creatures. Indeed, the number of animals you ll see here will rival that of all the other days of your voyage combined. DAYS 14 & 15 At Sea The next few days at sea can be as busy or as relaxing as you desire. Go on deck to spot whales and sea birds flying overhead, or attend lectures from our on-board specialists. Whatever you choose, remember to take a moment to reflect on the amazing creatures you ve met so far. DAY 16 Disembarkation, Port Stanley and Fly to Santiago Upon arrival in the Falklands (Malvinas), you ll be greeted by a feeling of rugged remoteness. Disembark in Port Stanley, a unique outpost with a British country-charm. There are plenty of churches and museums to explore, as well as some friendly locals willing to chat over a drink at the pub. This afternoon, board a charter flight to Santiago, Chile. Overnight at airport hotel. DAY 17 Depart for Home After breakfast, you are free to continue on your flight homeward. Each landing you make on South Georgia will open your eyes to a new wonder of wildlife; one day may be a beach filled with a hundred thousand pairs of king penguins, the next may present some close encounters with massive elephant seals or the smaller fur seals. Different penguin and bird species utilize the island landscape differently here, making it a fascinating destination teeming with wildlife from the shoreline to the top of the highest grassy hills. Antarctic Peninsula POSSIBLE LANDINGS AND WILDLIFE SIGHTINGS Stepping foot on Antarctica is a moment of pleasure that affects each traveler differently. Your possible landing on Antarctica will take place in the Peninsula, which is an extension of the Transantarctic Mountain chain and is the most northern stretch of Antarctic land. Formed from uplifted submarine troughs that were filled with sediment about 220 million years ago, this is a dynamic land of both desolation and diversity. To the east is the frozen, wild Weddell Sea. To the west, howling winds and warming seas from the Southern Ocean create perfect conditions for whale sightings. CUVERVILLE ISLAND A gentoo penguin rookery is situated on the north end of the island on a rocky beach. Depending on the time of season that you arrive, you may see them building nests or attending to their chicks. Giant petrels and kelp gulls breed on the island. DAMOY POINT If you are lucky enough to mail a postcard in Antarctica, you ll likely pass through here, as Damoy Point is the northern entrance to the harbor on which Port Lockroy is located. DANCO ISLAND This small island 1.6 km (one mile) in length is easy to explore and home to gentoo penguins. You can visit the marker of a former British Antarctic Survey hut and watch for a variety of seabirds such as snowy sheathbills, kelp gulls and blue-eyed shags. ENTERPRISE ISLAND Located in Wilhelmina Bay, the island was used by whalers. You can take a Zodiac cruise around the island, which passes a wrecked whaling ship. LEMAIRE CHANNEL This strait runs between Booth Island and the Antarctic Peninsula where you ll see that this is one of the most scenic locations on the western coast, especially during sunrise and sunset. The 11 km (6.8 mile) channel may become impassable when ice fills the narrow passageway, so hope for clear waters. MELCHIOR ISLANDS A group of low islands in Dallmann Bay, where you may see male fur seals haul out at the end of the breeding season to recuperate from their battles of supremacy. NEKO HARBOUR Little evidence remains that this bay was once used by the floating whale factory ship Neko. You might see some whale vertebrae used by the resident gentoo penguins as shelter from the wind. There is an unmanned refuge hut here, erected by Argentina. You can climb past the hut and up a steep slope for spectacular views of the glacier-rimmed harbor. PETERMANN ISLAND Near the Lemaire Channel, you can stand ashore here and see the southernmost breeding colony of gentoo penguins. The dome of the island rises 200 meters (650 feet) above the sea, offering you a challenging hike with rewarding panoramic views. Adélie penguins, shags and south polar skuas also inhabit the island. PORT LOCKROY A fun destination of sorts, we always strive to make it to Port Lockroy if weather permits. The harbor is on the west side of Wiencke Island. A secret base was built on the harbor during the Second World War as part of Operation Tabarin. It is now designated as a historic site, where Port Lockroy is a museum and post office. Proceeds from your purchases here support the preservation of historic sites from the Heroic Age of Exploration. ANTARCTIC EXPRESS: FLY/CRUISE ANTARCTICA, SOUTH GEORGIA AND THE FALKLANDS EXPEDITION DOSSIER 7

WATERBOAT POINT Of historic interest, you may venture to this unique point, which, at low tide, is connected to the Antarctic mainland. Zodiacs are used to explore the area when the tide is in. Two scientists studying penguin behavior lived in a water boat on the Point from 1921-22. The remains of their camp has been designated an Antarctic historical site. BROWN BLUFF A possible exposed volcano, Brown Bluff towers 745 meters (2,225 feet) over the home of Adélie and gentoo penguin rookeries, which number in the thousands. These penguins will create a symphony of background noise while you explore the bluff. PAULET ISLAND Located in the northwestern Weddell Sea, the island is home to a large Adélie penguin rookery. With a volcanic cone 352 meters (1158 feet) high, Paulet Island reminds you that this was once a very active landscape. In addition to penguins, you may be interested in visiting a historic hut built by members of the Swedish Antarctic Expedition 1901-04. A cross marks the grave site of Ole Wennersgaard, a member of that team who died on the island. ANTARCTIC EXPRESS: FLY/CRUISE ANTARCTICA, SOUTH GEORGIA AND THE FALKLANDS EXPEDITION DOSSIER 8

South Georgia POSSIBLE LANDINGS AND WILDLIFE SIGHTINGS South Georgia is roughly 160 km (100 miles) by 32 km (20 miles) wide. When the legendary Captain Cook published his account of the area, he created a rush of interest in whaling and sealing on South Georgia and the Sandwich Islands. Today, penguins and seals are abundant once again. DRYGALSKI FJORD This is a photogenic and dramatic fjord, with sharp and jagged peaks rising out of the sea. Glaciation never reached the peaks of this fjord, giving it a unique landscape. GOLD HARBOUR The backdrop to this harbor is the hanging Bertrab Glacier. King and gentoo penguins call this home, as do rowdy elephant and fur seals. GRYTVIKEN Only a handful of people live, albeit temporarily, on South Georgia, a United Kingdom overseas territory. Two of them are curators of the South Georgia Museum, located in the former whaling station manager s villa. The church was built for the whaling community and is the only building in Grytviken that is still used for its original purpose. SALISBURY PLAIN One of the largest king penguin rookeries on the island is located on Salisbury Plain. The Murphy and Lucas Glaciers flank the plain, creating a perfect backdrop for photographers. ST. ANDREW S BAY About 100,000 breeding pairs of king penguin nest at St. Andrew s Bay. It is the largest king penguin rookery on South Georgia and is a wildlife spectacle to behold. STROMNESS This abandoned whaling station was in full operation the day that Ernest Shackleton and his companions staggered in after a 36-hour trek across the island. There is a small cemetery here, with the graves of 14 whalers. PRION ISLAND Robert Cushman Murphy named this island for the species of petrels that are seen on the island Prion. Birders will be pleased to know that wandering albatross are also known to nest on the island. ANTARCTIC EXPRESS: FLY/CRUISE ANTARCTICA, SOUTH GEORGIA AND THE FALKLANDS EXPEDITION DOSSIER 9

South Shetland Islands POSSIBLE LANDINGS AND WILDLIFE SIGHTINGS The archipelago stretches for 540 km (335 miles) from northeast to southwest off the coast of Antarctica. The Bransfield Strait separates this archipelago from the Antarctic Peninsula. Nearly 200 years ago the islands were wiped clear of seals. Today, you ll see that the seal populations have recovered and the islands once again support an abundance of wildlife. AITCHO ISLANDS This is a group of small islands, some still unnamed, situated in the northern entrance of English Strait. You can often spot a great mix of wildlife here, with gentoo and chinstrap penguins having established rookeries. Southern elephant and fur seals are frequently hauled out here too. BAILY HEAD Also known as Rancho Point, this area is a rocky headland on the southeastern shore of Deception Island. Chinstrap penguins build nests on slopes leading to a high ridge that dominates the natural amphitheater and provides you with a superb setting for landscape photography. HALF MOON ISLAND This crescent-shaped island was known to sealers as early as 1821. Unlike sealers who liked to keep their best locations secret, we re happy to bring you ashore on this impressive island. Many Antarctic birds breed here including chinstrap penguins, shags, Wilson s storm petrels, kelp gulls, snowy sheathbills, Antarctic terns and skua. HANNAH POINT Macaroni, chinstrap and gentoo penguin rookeries are located on the point, which is on the south coast of Livingston Island. Due to the rather congested area available to the nesting penguins, you can only visit here from January 10 onwards. PENDULUM COVE Hot geothermal waters are found along the shoreline of this cove, named for observations made in 1829 by a British expedition. You may see yellow algae and boiled krill floating on the surface of because of the scalding hot water! PENGUIN ISLAND Antarctica has two flowering plants, both of which you can find on Penguin Island: Deschampsia antarctica and Colobanthus quitensis. Chinstrap penguins, fur seals and southern elephant seals use the island for breeding purposes. ROBERT POINT A nice spot for Zodiac cruising, this point was known to sealers as early as 1820. Chinstrap penguins, kelp gulls and pintado breed and whales may be seen in the surrounding waters. TELEFON BAY Your Expedition Team will be happy to point out that it is here where the most recent evidence of volcanic eruption on Deception Island can be seen. TURRET POINT Chinstrap and Adélie penguin rookeries are found on this point, situated on the south coast of King George Island. You ll find the beaches here can get crowded with fur, southern elephant and Weddell seals hauled out on the rocks. WHALER S BAY To reach Whaler s Bay it is necessary to sail through a narrow passage called Neptune s Bellows. The bay was used by whalers from 1906 to 1931 and it is part of a protected harbor created by a circular flooded caldera, known as Deception Island. Along with waddling penguins and lounging seals, you ll see rusting remains of whaling operations on the beach. Watch for steam that may rise from geothermally heated water springs along the shoreline. ANTARCTIC EXPRESS: FLY/CRUISE ANTARCTICA, SOUTH GEORGIA AND THE FALKLANDS EXPEDITION DOSSIER 10

YANKEE HARBOUR Gentoo penguins have established a rookery on this harbor, which is situated on the southwest side of Greenwich Island. Here you can see an abandoned Argentine refuge hut and a large glacier that stretches along the east and north sides of the bay. An abandoned sealing try pot is all that remains of the activity that brought men thousands of miles in tall ships to seek their fortune. ANTARCTIC EXPRESS: FLY/CRUISE ANTARCTICA, SOUTH GEORGIA AND THE FALKLANDS EXPEDITION DOSSIER 11

Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) POSSIBLE LANDINGS AND WILDLIFE SIGHTINGS A rare treat on an Antarctic voyage is to stop by for a pint with some locals! At Stanley, in the Falklands, this is one unique optional activity many travelers partake in. This archipelago itself consists of East and West Falkland, divided by Falkland Sound. Not many flat stretches are found here, so you ll get a workout while hiking and exploring. STANLEY The deep-water harbor of Stanley was the economic mainstay of the community since the ports completion in 1845. Sailing ships damaged while rounding Cape Horn called in here for expensive repairs. The questionable vessels used to carry fortune seekers to the gold fields of California and Australia often called at Stanley as well. Stanley is as lively as it gets in the Falklands (Malvinas) and the future of the port may be bright if hydrocarbon deposits off the coast prove to be abundant. IMPORTANT REMINDER Embracing the unexpected is part of the legacy and excitement of expedition travel. There are no guarantees that we can achieve everything we set out to accomplish. A measure of flexibility is something all of us must bring to a voyage. There are nearly 200 recognized sites in the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetlands and the places mentioned above may be changed to others equally as interesting.
