ADS-B NextGen Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) ADS-B is transforming all segments of aviation. Real-time precision, shared situational awareness, advanced applications for pilots and controllers. Real-time ADS-B is used now for air traffic control General aviation is safer with ADS-B traffic, weather, and flight-information services ADS-B improves safety and efficiency in the air and on runways, reduces costs, and lessens harmful effects on the environment.
OLD MODE C Versus NEW MODE S Transponder What is a Mode C Transponder. Refers to aircraft equipped with an altitude encoder and altimeter. With Mode C, ATC will actually see the flight level altitude on their radar screen if the transponder is operating in the Mode C or "ALT" (altitude) Mode. What is a Mode S Transponder? Upon interrogation, Mode S transponders transmit information about the aircraft to the SSR (Secondary Surveillance Radar) system, to TCAS receivers on board aircraft and to the ADS-B SSR system. This information includes the call sign of the aircraft and/or the transponder's permanent ICAO 24-bit address in the form of a hex code.
And We Care Because??? Secondary surveillance radar (SSR) is a radar system used in air traffic control (ATC), that not only detects and measures the position of aircraft i.e. bearing, but also requests additional information from the aircraft itself such as its identity and altitude. Unlike primary radar systems that measure the bearing of targets using the detected reflections of radio signals, SSR relies on targets equipped with a radar transponder, that replies to each interrogation signal by transmitting a response containing encoded data.

Garmin GTX 345 Transponder All-in-one Transponder Solution for ADS-B Out and In 1090 MHz ADS-B Out enables aircraft to operate at any altitude, in any airspace around the globe Combines Mode S Extended Squitter (ES) transponder and optional WAAS/GPS position source in a single unit Provides access to dual-link ADS-B In traffic and subscription-free weather on compatible displays
Garmin GTX 345 Transponder Wirelessly stream weather, traffic, GPS position and backup attitude via Connext link to Garmin Pilot and ForeFlight Mobile apps as well as the aera 795/796 or 660 portables Easy replacement for existing transponder, with common 1.65-inch tall form factor
Garmin GTX 345 Transponder The addition of 1090 MHz ADS-B Out transmission capability (using precise GPS-referenced positioning information) enables the transponder to automatically output the more accurate, more dynamic traffic surveillance data that the NextGen airspace system requires. Plus, available ADS-B In reception unlocks even more capabilities for pilots, enabling them to display ADS-B traffic, weather and more on our GTN 625 GPS Map Screen.

Final Thoughts This MAY all seems like Massive OVERKILL, but the Buzzards do not show up on the ADSB Traffic Page! A complete understanding of Operations and shortcuts reduces Aircrew Heads Down time! Someone is always Flying the Aircraft and Someone is always looking out to See and Avoid! If you can t find the process in the Air STOP and come back and put time on the Simulator!
