BOOK EARLY & SAVE 1000 PER PERSON The Great White Continent An expedition to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia & the Antarctic Peninsula aboard the MS Bremen 20 th January to 12 th February 2019

King Penguins, South Georgia Humpback whale Even today after many decades of exploration, Antarctica still remains a world apart, a majestic last frontier surpassing even the most jaded of travellers expectations. Join us aboard the MS Bremen and follow in the footsteps of researchers, pioneers, adventurers and discoverers on this expedition cruise to the sixth continent. It is hard to put into words the sheer grandeur of an Antarctic landscape. This most southern of continents, this desert of ice, is so unique and uncommon to man s experience, that even the most dramatic of photographs pale into insignificance when one is confronted by the sheer magnitude, beauty and wonder of an Antarctic landscape. Enormous icebergs rise from the sea, hillsides are covered with thousands of penguins and seals bask on icebergs dotted in the ocean; the sights, sounds and emotions will stay with you forever. For most travellers the Antarctic experience is a once in a lifetime visit, it is therefore important that the trip should be as rewarding as possible and the MS Bremen is the perfect vessel both in terms of the educational experience on board and the number of opportunities to go ashore. Antarctica is to be experienced, not just to be seen, and we believe the only way to do this is on board a small ship. To enjoy the wonders of this icy paradise in the company of a small and enthusiastic party is the perfect way to achieve the most from a visit to this extraordinary place. Our expedition aboard the MS Bremen features magnificent South Georgia where you will experience one of the world s natural wonders, the Alps in mid-ocean, offering remarkable concentrations of wildlife against a backdrop of glaciers and snow-covered mountains. Hugging the coast to the wildest reaches of the island we land on beaches alive with rampaging fur seals, somnolent elephant seals and truly astonishing numbers of King penguins. We have three days of exploration in this unique animal paradise and using the Zodiacs you will land each day allowing you the optimum time ashore to experience this rich animal kingdom. We also spend time on the Falkland Islands, a truly enchanting place with a unique character and staggering wildlife. This is the last sanctuary of the elegant albatross which soars gracefully against the blue sky, with colonies of elephant seals basking at the foot of vertiginous cliffs. In between our landings and while at sea, you can pass the time on deck looking for wildlife, attend the series of lectures by members of the expedition team and simply relax on board enjoying the facilities. Below are extracts from the ship log of a recent expedition to Antarctica: 8 January, South Georgia: After an early dinner, we landed at Gold Harbour. While we might not have found any of the pyrite from which the harbour derives its name, we were rewarded with the rich and warm colours of the late day sunshine, the diverse avifauna (including King, gentoo, and chinstrap penguins), and the alternating sedentary and violent performances of the South Atlantic elephant seals. It was almost as though we were watching some nature special on BBC television, except this was even better, live, in front of us. It was difficult to believe these behemoths, enormous already, were but mere 3-4-year-old males; full grown bulls will be twice as big and weigh in at four tons. This landing was like visual candy: there were so many good things at which to look that it was almost difficult to make a decision. The stark landscape was stunning, a perfect backdrop to our warm, beach experience. The penguins did what penguins do: standing there, preening, begging, following, approaching, retreating, and vocalising. The King penguin s ability to tilt its head back and let out a multi-toned harmony was spine-tingling. The gentle gentoo penguin, lumped with several others in the jackass penguin family, was mostly mute, but when it did cry out, you instantly understood the donkey reference. The sense of being in such a wild place where we are clearly only visitors was euphoric. 11 January, At sea: We managed an astounding five species of whales today! Fin whales were the numbers champion. We learned their tall spout, low profile, and curved dorsal fin set well back on its body. Not many more than eight humpback whales made an appearance, with at least five breaching off in the foggy distance. Killer whales made a good showing with at least six. Two long finned pilot whales were a treat for at least a few lucky viewers. A rare and elusive southern bottlenose whale stole the show; almost quite literally, then it made a cameo appearance during the cocktail reception. Not to be outdone by the whales, thousands of Cape petrels followed our wake, often floating on unseen air currents just out of reach. www.noble-caledonia.co.uk

Icebergs, Antarctica South Georgia Albatrosses Gentoo Penguins The Itinerary Day 1 London to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Fly by scheduled flight. Day 2 Buenos Aires. Arrive this morning and transfer to our hotel for an overnight stay. The remainder of the day and evening is free for independent exploration or alternatively join a city tour with our local guide. Day 3 Buenos Aires to Ushuaia. After breakfast transfer to the airport for our specially chartered flight to Ushuaia. On arrival transfer to the MS Bremen and sail this evening. Day 4 At Sea. As we sail south, keep watch for the albatrosses, prions and petrels that frequently follow the ship. The expedition team will be out on deck looking for the whales and dolphins which may also be seen in the area. The onboard presentations with informative and entertaining talks on the wildlife, history and geology of the Falkland Islands and Southern Ocean will begin today and helpful briefings on environmental regulations and expedition safety will also be held in the comfortable lounge. Days 5 & 6 Falkland Islands. Our time in the Falklands will be flexible. The Captain and Expedition Leader will explore the best options to drop anchor in order to use the Zodiacs and discover these fascinating islands. The abundant birdlife becomes apparent as soon as the Zodiac takes you to the coastline. With more than 60 different species including rock-hopper penguins, Magellanic penguins and albatrosses, the island is a paradise for ornithologists. During natural history walks along the coast, your expert guides will provide fascinating information about the head-high tussock grass and the Victorian houses in Stanley. Days 7 & 8 At Sea. There will be plenty of wildlife spotting as we make our way east across the Antarctic Convergence and officially enter Antarctic waters. Shipboard presentations will continue featuring briefings on the exciting history and abundant wildlife of South Georgia. Days 9 to 11 South Georgia. Days of breathtaking expedition experiences lie ahead when glaciated mountain summits and deep fjords on the horizon signal your approach to this unique animal paradise. The Zodiacs are used several times a day to let us experience some very special wildlife sightings. We will learn with the onboard experts in front of a gigantic colony of King penguins. The island is home to almost 200,000 animals inhabiting the steep slopes and coastline, including Salisbury Plain, which is covered by birds begging for food, or Gold Harbour beach where fur seals and elephant seals sleep through your visit. The biologists, geologists or glaciologists accompanying you will intensify your unique natural experiences with surprising details about the wildlife. At the former Grytviken whaling station, the grave of Sir Ernest Shackleton recalls the bravery and adventure of times gone by. Making a heroic effort, he once saved his team after the ship was forced to spend winter in the pack ice. It is an example of the lifelines of the polar explorers you will cross on every expedition. Day 12 At Sea. Heading further south, the informative presentations will continue as will our chance to spot wildlife from the deck. Days 13 to 19 South Orkney Islands, South Shetland Islands & Antarctic Peninsula. We have seven days to explore the area. In the glaciated South Orkney Islands we will gain an insight into the everyday lives of polar researchers when, weather permitting, we will be taken in the Zodiacs to visit the Argentinian Orcadas research station (subject to authorisation). Enjoy the pure fascination of the drifting icebergs which, with a bit of luck, we will see off Signy Island. The bizarre blocks that have broken off the shelf ice and their huge archways shimmer a mystical shade of blue in the icy polar light. Unforgettable moments are guaranteed when crossing the Antarctic Sound and the water is suddenly parted by the fluke of a majestic whale. You will feel how impressive complete silence can be in the Weddell Sea which is home to breathtaking icebergs, some of which are as tall as a house and covered by Adelie penguins, and dense pack ice. The ice crunches and cracks around the ship s reinforced bow. In 1903, the Nordenskjöld expedition was forced to wait ten months to be rescued on the volcanic Paulet Island. Today, the island is home to countless penguins and, like Devil Island, makes for a very lively spectacle. On South Shetland Islands we will see towering basalt rocks, bizarre volcanic rock, black volcanic beaches and fossils up to 150 million years old. The

The Falklands Exploring ashore Musk Ox Antarctic Dolphin Crabeater seal Exploring by Zodiac archaic beauty of the Antarctic s largest island group is also a history book of geology and Antarctic exploration. After being forced to abandon their ship in the ice, Shackleton s men spent the winter on the rocky Elephant Island. In good weather, we can set out to reach destinations such as Half Moon Island. Walk across vast fields of snow and enjoy beautiful views of the rugged neighbouring Livingston Island, the home of majestic elephant seals. Your impressions will be just as unforgettable when we call at Deception Island. Thanks to its shallow draught, the MS Bremen can sail directly into the flooded caldera of the extinct volcano. Flanked by rock faces up to 50 metres in height, the black sand in front of you gives off steam as a testament to a past eruption. When we reach the Antarctic Peninsula the weather and ice will dictate the route. Enjoy unforgettable moments when, for example, we first set foot on the Antarctic mainland near to Paradise Bay. Snow-capped summits surround the bay, where icebergs drift and glaciers tower hundreds of metres above. The imposing glacier cliffs, such as those of Neko Harbor, generate a sublime soundscape. Gentoo penguins stretch as far as the eye can see on Cuverville Island, surrounded by drifting icebergs. One of the most impressive shipping passages in the world is the Lemaire Channel: mountains up to 1,000 metres high line the strait of water and seem to be almost within reach and the Neumayer Channel and Port Lockroy provide panoramic views of glaciers that are no less breathtaking. Days 20 & 21 Drake Passage. The lecture programme continues and we can keep an eye out for wildlife as we return to the Argentinian mainland. Day 22 Ushuaia to Buenos Aires, Argentina Disembark this morning and transfer to the airport for our specially chartered flight to Buenos Aires. On arrival transfer to our hotel for an overnight stay. Day 23 Buenos Aires to London.
