P a g e 6 Hoan Kiem Lake Hoan Kiem lake is situated in the historical center of Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam. The name of the lake means "Lake of the Returned Sword" or "Lake of the Restored Sword", so named because according to legend, in 1428 an Emperor of the time returned a magical sword to the lake, and the Golden Turtle God, who had loaned him the sword to help fight off the invading Chinese. The lake is one of the major scenic spots in the city, and serves as a focal point for its public life. Hanoi Old Quarter Located in the Hoan Kiem District near Hoan Kiem Lake, the Old Quarter features French-colonial architecture, temples and pagodas. With a history that spans over 1000 years, Hanoi's Old Quarter is the oldest continuously developed area in Vietnam, and has a rich cultural heritage. While the region s specialties have changed and adapted over the years, featuring modern commodities and services, the ancient commercial streets are named after their original businesses. Visitors to the Old Quarter can explore the cafes, bars, restaurants, boutique shops and art galleries in the historical area. Day 3: Lan Vien Hotel, Hanoi Hanoi tour (B/L/D) After a leisurely breakfast you will enjoy a full day tour of Hanoi: Ceramic Mosaic Tran Quoc Pagoda Ho Chi Minh Complex, including: the Mausoleum, Ba Dinh Square, the old residence of Ho Chi Minh. One Pillar Pagoda Temple of Literature After lunch at Local Restaurant your tour continues with visits to: Ethnology museum Hoa Lo Prison (also known as the Hanoi Hilton) The evening is yours so why not visit the night market close to your hotel (Night market is open on Friday, Saturday & Sunday). P a g e 7 Overnight at Hotel in Hanoi Ceramic Mosaic Tran Quoc Pagoda Ho chi Minh Complex One Pillar Pagoda Temple of Literature Vietnam Museum of Ethnology Hoa Lo Prison Tran Quoc Pagoda The Trấn Quốc Pagoda in Hanoi towers over the scenery around it, and is the oldest pagoda in the city, originally constructed in the sixth century during the reign of Emperor Lý Nam Đế (from 544 until 548), giving it an age of more than 1,450 years! The pagoda has strong ties to Buddhism, as Buddhist monks have lived at the Trấn Quốc Pagoda for centuries, teaching the ways of Buddhism to the public the pagodas are red because in Chinese and Vietnamese culture red symbolizes luck and prosperity. The pagoda, with its harmonious architecture and location next to the water, is a picturesque attraction, and the sunset views from the temple grounds are renowned for their beauty. One Pillar Pagoda The One Pillar Pagoda was originally built by the Emperor Ly Thai Tong between the years of 1028 to 1054. Built of wood on a single stone pillar in the center of a lotus pond, the pagoda was designed to resemble a lotus blossom. The shrine inside the pagoda is dedicated to the Vietnamese Buddhist deity Quan Am. One of Vietnam's iconic temples, the pagoda is set in a beautifully tranquil garden. The pagoda was rebuilt in 1955 when the base was destroyed during the French evacuation of Hanoi. Temple of Literature Founded in 1070 by Emperor Ly Thanh Tong, the Temple of Literature is dedicated to Confucius. The well preserved building is a superb example of traditional Vietnamese architecture. The ancient site features a pond known as, the Well of Heavenly Clarity, as well as pavilions, courtyards, passageways and statues. It is the site of Vietnam s first university, established in 1076, when entrance was granted only to those of noble birth. The historic buildings from the Ly and Tran dynasties have become a memorial to education and literature. Vietnam Museum of Ethnology The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is a museum in Hanoi, Vietnam. The museum focuses on the 54 officially recognised ethnic groups in Vietnam, and showcases their different cultures. It is located in the Cầu Giấy District, about 8 km from the city center. Hoa Lo Prison Hỏa Lò Prison was a prison used by the French colonists in Vietnam for political prisoners, and later by North Vietnam for U.S. Prisoners of War during the Vietnam War. During this later period it was sarcastically known to American POWs as the Hanoi Hilton. The prison was demolished during the 1990s, though the gatehouse remains as a museum.

Perfume River The Perfume River crosses the city of Hue, in the central province of Thua Thien Hue in Vietnam. Approximately 80 kilometers long, the river s name was derived from the fact that it flows through forests of aromatic plants before reaching Hue, taking with it a pleasant perfume like scent. The two sources of the river, begin in the Truong Son Mountain range and meet at Bang Lang Fork. The Perfume River flows through a series of significant and beautiful spots, offering an incredible experience by boat. Thien Mu Pagoda Thien Mu Pagoda is situated on Ha Khe hill, on the northern bank of the Perfume River, in Huong Long, in the city of Hue. Built in 1601, by the Nguyen Dynasty, the pagoda has seven levels and is the tallest religious structure in Vietnam. The main sanctuary, Dai Hung Shrine, houses three statues of the Buddha, as well as other significant relics. A pavilion to the west of the tower houses a giant bronze bell weighing 3285 kg, the Dai Hong Chung. The bell is audible from 10 kilometers away. The Thien Mu Pagoda was restored by several kings of the Nguyen Dynasty. Day 7: Lasiesta Resort & Spa Hoi An, Hoi An Hoi An Hoi An, on Vietnam s central coast, is enchanting. Historically, the pass was a physical division between the kingdoms of Champa and Đại Việt. The name of the pass means Ocean Cloud Pass and refers to the mists that rise from the ocean, considerably reducing visibility. The completion of the of Hải Vân Tunnel has made a huge difference to the flow of traffic through the pass. Japanese Covered Bridge A beautiful historical piece of Japanese architecture, the Japanese Covered Bridge in Hoi An was constructed in the 1590's. Connecting Tran Phu St with Nguyen Thi Minh Khai St, the bridge was opened by Nguyen Phuc Chu Lord in 1719. Locally known as, Cau Nhat Ban or the Pagoda Bridge, the approximately 60 foot long bridge is painted in a shade of red and features a wooden pagoda roof as a shelter from the rain and sun. The bridge features sculptures of a dog and monkey, guarding the bridge at either end. The sacred symbols of Japanese culture are said to represent the Chinese years in which the building of the bridge began and was completed. On the north side of the bridge is a temple dedicated to the Taoist God of weather, Tran Vo Bac De. It was originally constructed as a Hindu temple of god Vishnu for the Khmer Empire, gradually transforming into a Buddhist temple towards the end of the 12th century. It was built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century in Yaśodharapura (Khmer: present-day Angkor), the capital of the Khmer Empire, as his state temple and eventual mausoleum. Breaking from the Shaiva tradition of previous kings, Angkor Wat was instead dedicated to Vishnu. As the best-preserved temple at the site, it is the only one to have remained a significant religious centre since its foundation. The temple is at the top of the high classical style of Khmer architecture. It has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag, and it is the country's prime attraction for visitors.
