Alabama is home to hundreds of aerospace companies performing work in general aviation, space, defense and maintenance. Alabama also has a strong agricultural presence, which includes nine million acres of farmland and more than 22 million acres of managed forest tracts. Alabama has a deepwater seaport, seven commercial airports, five interstate highways, five Class I railroads, one of the largest inland waterway systems in the nation, and ten inland docks that support manufacturing and distribution. International trade opens an array of opportunities for Alabama. In 2011, exports totaled $17.9 billion increasing from $12.4 billion in 2010 while imports totaled $17.1 billion. Recent big wins for the state signaled sustained growth. Shipbuilder Austal USA has secured $691 million in military contracts, while Hyundai Heavy Industries completed a $90 million plant in Montgomery, Ala., that produces power transformers. With all of this and more, it is no mystery why so many shippers and carriers are turning to Alabama as a place to conduct business.

ABOUT AAPA The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) is a trade association representing more than 160 public port authorities in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and Latin America. Association members include more than 335 sustaining and associate members firms and individuals with an interest in the seaports of the Western Hemisphere. AAPA is dedicated to serving deep draft public ports by enhancing port management professionalism and advocating issues critical to public seaports. AAPA promotes the common interests of the port community and provides leadership on trade, transportation, environmental and other issues related to port development and operations. AAPA also works to educate the public, media, and local, state and federal legislators about the essential role ports play within the global transportation system. 2012 AAPA Convention The AAPA Annual Convention continues to be the largest membership meeting of the year. AAPA will be celebrating its centennial year and 101st convention with the Alabama State Port Authority in Mobile, Ala. The 2012 AAPA Convention will include technical and policy committee meetings, business sessions, and networking opportunities for port professionals and others in the marine transportation industry. More than 1,000 attendees from throughout the Americas will be in attendance, with a particular focus on senior and executive management personnel from port authorities and suppliers to the port and marine industries.

ABOUT THE alabama state port authority The Port of Mobile is among the top-ranked ports in the nation in both foreign trade and overall waterborne cargo volume. The full service public seaport terminals are owned by the Alabama State Port Authority, which handles containerized, general cargo, dry and liquid bulk, frozen poultry, and oversized and heavy lift cargoes. Since 2000, the Alabama State Port Authority has invested over $700 million in port improvement programs that provided shippers with an array of new facilities, technology and innovation. Located just 32 miles from the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico, export and import trade through both public and private terminals generate $10 billion in economic impact annually and support nearly 100,000 direct and indirect jobs in the state of Alabama alone. The Alabama State Port Authority takes an active leadership role in economic development and job creation initiatives that brought companies such as APM Terminals, International Shipholding Corporation, Hyundai, ThyssenKrupp, SSAB, Berg Spiral Pipe, INEOS Phenol, Aker Solutions and Standard Concrete to the state of Alabama. The Alabama State Port Authority s public cargo terminals boast an extensive inland transportation network unmatched by many ports in the United States and North America. Five Class I railroads CSX, Canadian National, Burlington Northern Santa Fe (Alabama & Gulf Coast Railroad), Norfolk Southern and Kansas City Southern serve the public terminals. The Port Authority is also home to the CG Railway, which provides waterborne rail service every four days to Coatzacoalcos, Mexico (Veracruz Region). Two interstate systems, via Interstate 10 and Interstate 65, provide unencumbered access to markets located to the north, east and west. Inland waterways also play a vital role at the seaport. The Port Authority is located at the terminus of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway and its ship channel intersects with the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. Shippers have access to nearly 15,000 miles of inland and intracoastal waterways that offer low-cost and fuel-efficient water access to ports along the Gulf of Mexico, and the Tennessee, Ohio and Upper Mississippi river systems. The transportation assets, coupled with a strong favorable labor market and community/state/federal support, make the Port of Mobile one of the nation s fastest growing ports.
