Location: Tree House Space 950 Grant Avenue, 2nd Floor Telephone: 415-800-7160 Click this link to see a google map of the location. 950 Grant Avenue is at the north end of Chinatown on Grant Avenue in San Francisco (Grant Avenue is the main Chinatown thoroughfare). See page 6 in this PDF for a map of workshop location. See notes on page 2 for transportation and logistics suggestions. The location on Grant Avenue is on the vibrant and exciting street that runs the length of San Francisco Chinatown. This means that it is easy to miss the entrance the workshop location at 950 Grant Avenue, which is sandwiched between ornamental souvenir stores and a Chinese butcher. Fear not!! The room is there, and the premises are quite modern. Note that an elevator is available to get up to the second floor. Here is a picture of the workshop location: Workshop room is up here The entrance is here under the street address on the awning 1
When: Saturday, November 19 from 9:00 AM 6:00 PM with optional photography until 7:00 PM. Please plan to arrive by 8:45 AM so we can start on time. Sunday, November 20 from 10:00 AM 6:00 PM. Please see the curriculum on pages 4 and 5 for further details. Transportation, 1) You will not need a car during this workshop as we will either walk to Logistics, and locations, or transportation will be provided. Parking: 2) By public transportation, the nearest BART stop is Embarcadero. Note however that it is a fairly substantial walk from the station (see page 7 for a walking map). 3) If you drive, the most convenient parking garage is the Portsmouth Square Garage at 733 Kearny Street, SF 94108. This garage is about three blocks from the meeting room. This garage is open 24 hours and the daily rate is $27. (See the map on page 6 for the garage location.) What to Bring: 1) Camera gear: At a minimum, please bring a camera with wide-angle and telephoto focal lengths. You will also want a tripod and remote release. If you are an experienced travel photographer, you probably know what to pack. The suggestion here is to bring your normal kit, but err on the side of going light. Do bring fully charged batteries and memory cards. Since rain is a possibility, please make sure that you can protect your camera bag with a rain cover. A plastic trash bag works in a pinch! 2) Computer: Please bring a computer with Photoshop, Nik Silver Efex Pro, and any other black and white conversion program/plug-in that you like to use and play with. 3) Thumb Drive: Please bring a USB thumb drive with six to ten of your 2
best/favorite black and white images, saved as JPEGs for the portfolio review session on Saturday. 4) Clothing: Weather in San Francisco is notoriously unpredictable. We expect temperatures in the 50s and 60s, but it will likely feel cooler because of autumn moisture. Rain is a possibility. The best bet is to bring layered clothing, so that you can adjust layers depending on comfort. Be sure to include a rain shell. 5) Foot Gear: We will be walking up and down some of San Francisco s notorious hills. Please wear comfortable shoes that are supportive with a good grip. 6) Headlamp: Sunset this weekend in San Francisco is before 5:00 PM. We will likely be photographing well into twilight on Saturday. Please come prepared with a headlamp (preferred) or a flashlight. Lunch: There will be a lunch break in the middle of both days at noon. There are no shortage of places to eat in Chinatown. Most likely, many of us will be eating together in a Dutch treat arrangement; however, you are certainly welcome to eat on your own. Questions: If you have any questions, please let us know. You can email questions to phyllis@bearhome.com. On the day of the workshop, please use Harold s mobile for calls or texts at 510.295.3982. 3
