India Shopping, Treasures, & the Taj November 3-11, 2011 1 L Day Nov. 2/3 We depart Bahrain at 2210 on Gulf Air flight GF 130. Our direct flight arrives in Delhi at 0520 hours November 3, where we transfer to the Radisson Hotel, Gurgaon for breakfast, before driving south to the Neemrana Fort Palace, complete with excellent shopping, spa services, and a state-of-the-art New Zealand zip line course. Built in 1464, this architectural jewel is cut into the hillside, offering commanding vistas over the Rajasthani country-side. Welcome dinner and dance performance. Nov. 4 Driving further south towards Jaipur, the Samode Palace comes into view as it emerges from the cobbled streets and stone houses. We savor our lunch at one of India s most romantic hotels. After lunch we drive into Jaipur and check in to the Shahpura House Hotel. (Neemrana Fort Palace built in 1464)

Nov. 5 Today we tour the Amber Fort. Set on dry wrinkled hills, we ride up the 300 foot incline to this hilltop palace on painted elephants, passing through the ancient main gate where the maharajas of Jaipur entered for four hundred years. Lunch will be at the local Spice Village Restaurant. Afternoon shopping for block printing textiles, gems from India s gem-cutting capital, and rugs. Overnight Shahpura House Hotel. Nov. 6 In the morning we will visit the Palace of the Winds, where the veiled royal women and the court harem could peer through the lacy stone grillwork to the street life below. We continue to the City Palace and the Royal Observatory; an astronomical treasure house to chart the heavens. There are two excellent places to shop for fine clothing and designer items, as well as an exhibition of exquisite miniature paintings by local masters. Afternoon at leisure for personal exploration with time for more shopping experiences which might include homedécor boutiques, blue pottery, embroidered leather footwear, enamel, and antiques. Overnight Shahpura House Hotel. Nov. 7 Traveling east, we stop for lunch at the Laximi Vilas Palace which was built in 1887. We proceed by rickshaw to view the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, one of the finest bird parks in the world. More than 300 species of birds are found in this small wildlife sanctuary. We venture into the desert to visit the ghost city of Fatehpur Sikri. Built by Emperor Akbar, in honor of a Sufi saint, it is a veritable fairy tale city with its ruins still in a pristine condition. Overnight Jaypee Palace in Agra.

Nov. 9 After breakfast we visit the garden tomb of Itmad Ud Daula, lyrically described as a jewel box in marble. At Sikandara we visit the Mughal Emperor Akbar s tomb. The afternoon is at leisure for relaxation, shopping for marble inlay, and personal exploration. Overnight Jaypee Palace. Nov. 8 The famous 17 th century masterpiece, the Taj Mahal begins our day in Agra at 0600. This structure is perhaps the most perfect architectural monument in the world. It was built in memory of Shah Jehan s beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal (jewel of the palace). We will return to our hotel for breakfast before setting out in a tonga (horse carriage) to visit the Agra Fort, a towering red-sandstone edifice. This afternoon we have some leisure time before an optional return to the Taj Mahal at 1600 to view this monument to love during the warm afternoon sun. Overnight Jaypee Palace. Nov. 10 Early morning we leave Agra for Delhi. After lunch we visit Raj Ghat - the memorial site of Mahatma Gandhi. We continue our adventure by trishaw, as we wind through the lanes of Old Delhi, and finish at the Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India. Evening at leisure at the Radisson Hotel, Gurgaon. Nov. 11 Morning visit to Qutub Minar with time for carpet shopping. 1100 transfer to the airport to connect with Gulf Air flight GF 131, departing at 1405 and arriving Bahrain at 1600.
