ACTIVITY REPORT Centre of Excellence: Barbados

VLab Activity Report Centre of Excellence GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE (CoE) AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF VLAB TRAINING ACTIVITIES 1) What were the major achievements of your CoE during this reporting period? The Virtual Round Table on Aeronautical Competence Standards; The Aeronautical Continuing Professional Development 02 Course weekly Sept 2012 to May 2013; Monthly Discussion Region Focus group. 2) What were the main difficulties of your CoE during this reporting period? Few network issues during live sessions; Occasional scheduling issues; There is still a lack of participants 3) Who provides support in the production of your training materials (e.g. produced by own trainers, support from Satellite Operators, IT staff, University researchers and lecturers, etc)? Support is providing by CIRA/NOAA out of the Colorado State University; COMET/MetEd under NCAR CIMH IT staff 4) Is any kind of Learning Management System (e.g. Moodle, Blackboard, etc) used by your CoE to conduce training activities? During this period CIMH employed the services of Blackboard/Elluminate; and CIMH was beta testing its Moodle platform called mycimh. 5) Is any kind of Online Conferencing System (e.g. Saba Centra, Blackboard Collaborate, GoToWebinar, etc) used by your CoE to conduce training activities? CIMH uses Blackboard for online conferences and training purposes; and participates in online meetings using Saba Centra and GoToWebinar. 6) What kind of training is provided to the trainers of your CoE and at what frequency? The trainers take advantage of all training opportunities. During this period there was training at COMET for the Trainer the Trainer for Hydrological Online course. 2

VLab Activity Report Centre of Excellence 7) Can you suggest ways for the VLab (including CoEs, Supporting Satellite Agencies, Partner Programmes, WMO Space Programme, VLab Cochairs and TSO) to provide better support to your CoE? VLab and its various supporters have indeed been extremely supported to CIMH. Can you suggest ways to improve this collaboration? Yes, CIMH has a very close working relationship with CIRA which is sponsored by NOAA. VLab Activity Report Centre of Excellence There were briefings run under the CIMH Disaster Management Project /DEWETRA which were not included in the report. These briefing will be coupled with the Discussion in the future. CIMH is working to increase its online footprint. The Hydrology Online course was run in late 2013 and was very successful. Also it is also proposed to have an online course for High School geography teachers on Meteorology. The next big project will be the CIMH VLab webpage. 11) The next page presents a table containing all training events entered by this CoE in the VLab Online Calendar of Events during this reporting period. Please complete the table with information about the number of trainees and Country of origin of trainees that attended the events. If the CoE had conducted other training events considered as part of their VLab activities, that for some reason were not submitted to the Online Calendar of Events, please add them to the table. 4
