3. Read the article then answer the questions on the next page. Any serious walker or hiker has visited or wants to visit the Pyrenees Mountains. This is a place where you can see beautiful mountains, green valleys and incredible waterfalls. The Pyrenees rise almost to 3,500 metres. They form a natural barrier between the Iberian Peninsula and France. The valleys are heavily forested and there are sharp rocky ridges on either side of the chain. You ll find language and cultures are distinct, on the eastern ends you ll hear more Basque and Catalan than Spanish or French. Most walkers or hikers prefer the areas near Barcelona because the weather is better and there are some good bus tours leaving from that city. One of the most popular places is the magnificent Ordesa National Park where various trails can be done along the canyon that gives the park its name. Further east is the Aigües Tortes National Park which, loosely translated, means Twisted Waters. A trek up to the various refuges that sit below the intimidating peaks will take you along forest trails that thread their way between these lovely sparkling pools. A good place to visit is the popular holiday village of Benasque in Aragón where cobbled streets wind between old stone buildings. The village is squeezed between two mountain massifs. On one side is the second highest peak Posets while on the other is the highest; Aneto at 3,440 metres. From Benasque a good trek takes you along the route up the Estos valley which could possibly claim to be one of the most beautiful valleys in the Pyrenees. On either side are high 3,000-metre peaks while the deep valley floor is covered with a mixture of pine and beech forest interspersed with lush meadows of lilies. This is a good place to spot some Pyrenean wildlife including marmots, bearded vultures and the elusive pine marten. Adapted from an article by Jim Manthorpe 2
