Hobart will be a buzz of colour and entertainment for the next four days but there is more to Hobart, over this time. See street vendors, enjoy entertainers and buskers, browse the markets and sample the delicious food on offer, as Tasmania puts its best foot forward for us. A great way to get around Hobart and see some of the local attractions (Museum and Art Gallery, Cascade s Female Prison, Botanical Gardens, St George s Church, Battery Point, Cascade s Brewery, etc) is to purchase a 2Day Red Double Decker Bus pass once we arrive in Hobart. Or if you wish to go further afield contact the friendly team (at least a month prior due to the influx of people at that time) at the Hobart Visitor Centre on +61 3 6238 4222 or bookings@hobarttravelcentre.com.au who will be glad to help with information about Half and Full Day Tours to Mt Wellington (great views), Bruny Island, Tahune Treetop Walk in the Huon Valley and Russell Falls at Mt Field National Park to name but a few. Or wish to take a ferry to MONA (Museum of Modern Art). A selection of 2015 Festival Entertainment offerings;

The Australian Wood Boat Festival: A Brief history, from the organisers: In 1994, following a visit to the famous Maritime Festival in Brittany, France, local yachtsman Andy Gamlin got together with fellow sailors Ian Johnston and Cathy Hawkins to put on a social event for wooden boat enthusiasts. From that small beginning, we have grown to become the largest wooden boat festival in the Southern Hemisphere, now attracting more than 200,000 visitors. Supported by state and local government, Tasmanian business and our wonderful volunteers, the MyState Australian Wooden Boat Festival comes around every two years, welcoming visitors from all over the world. The guiding principle is still the same: we celebrate our maritime culture and heritage and the enduring beauty of wooden boats. We value community and craftsmanship, we delight in our magnificent deep-water harbour and our natural environment and we extend genuine Tasmanian hospitality to all who come to see us. Hobart s historic waterfront will come alive with the colour and excitement of its rich maritime culture and history. You will see hundreds of wooden boats, from magnificent tall ships to classic sailboats, rugged working boats to superbly detailed models. You ll have a chance to talk to the owners and builders, the crafts people and sailors, and shipwrights who still practice traditional skills every day. There s a vibrant program of entertainment and fun, special guests, brilliant Tasmanian food and drink, demonstrations, races and displays. You can visit the Shipwright s Village, the Maritime Marketplace, the Children s Circus School, the International Wooden Boat Symposium and much, much more. The MyState Australian Wooden Boat Festival is the largest wooden boat festival in the Southern Hemisphere and admission is entirely free! The Festival takes in the whole of Sullivan s Cove from Hunter Street to Castray Esplanade. Hobart s working waterfront is right in the middle of the central business district with a great range of hotels, cafes and pubs right on the doorstep. Take a cruise, board a tall ship, snap up a fresh crayfish or listen to some great live music in the Waterside Tavern. It s all on for four wonderful days at Tasmania s favourite summer festival. The festival opens with the glorious Parade of Sail on Friday and continues straight through the long weekend (Monday is a public holiday in Hobart). The International Wooden Boat Symposium will present expert International and Australian speakers. The Maritime Marketplace hosts more than 60 exhibitors of hard-to-find maritime kit and boat building displays. The Shipwright s Village celebrates the traditional skills and tools still used today in Tasmania s artisan shipyards. The Tasmanian Fishing Industry will be represented and of course the brilliant program of entertainment in the Waterside Tavern.

A sample of the 2015 program; Parade of Sail It s a thrilling sight to see more than 300 wooden vessels, led by the mighty Tall Ships, as they make their way up the River Derwent. Tall Ships Numerous possibilities for short and long cruises. Maritime Marketplace and Theatre 60 maritime exhibitors, with product demonstrations, plus a stunning display of Tasmanian heritage boats. Model Boat Exhibition superb craftsmanship and detail. Four Foot Twos Display Historic small yachts on display. Quick n Dirty Boat Building Challenge Could you build a boat in just 3 hours? Would you be game enough to get in and race it? Teams of schoolkids will do just that. Build it on Saturday, Paint it on Sunday and Race it on Monday. Tasmanian Seafood Industry Exhibition Proud Past. Exciting Future. Taste some of the finest seafood in the world. See the evolution of the Seafood industry over time from the early small wooden boats to modern vessels today. Tour an operational rock lobster fishing boat and enjoy cooking displays. Sea Plane Flights To get a bird s eye view of this spectacular wooden boat festival. Feature Vessels Board and inspect James Craig and HM Bark Endeavour. Entertainment Jazz, swing, rock and light opera, dance, poetry, acrobatics and mime. Every form of singing from classic sea shanties to late-night blues, light opera to soul and all is completely free! The International Wooden Boat Symposium Hear from some of the world s foremost international experts sailing, along with Australian guest speakers. The Blundstone Big Log Project See a working team of Tasmania bullocks deliver a giant log to the Shipwright s Village, then look on as the craftsmen break it down using only hand tools and traditional skills to make useful ship-building timber. We ve heard that that there will also be stiff Skiff competition coming from the New Zealanders for this upcoming festival. These beautifully designed Iain Oughtred boats will be racing, once again, and the Kiwis think they are going to give the Tasmanians a run for their money. The Full 2017 Program will be sent out prior to the tour.
