WINTER SCHOOL 2014 Climate System Analysis Group POLICY AND DECISION MAKING FOR CLIMATE CHANGE AND ADAPTATION INFORMATION SHEET A summary of useful information for participants joining the Winter School course

WINTER SCHOOL VENUE All winter school teaching activities will take place in the Department of Environmental and Geographical Science. The main venue to be used will be the Geospatial lab on the ground floor. Other venues will be stated and participants directed to them when necessary. The Department is located on the Upper Campus of the University of Cape Town. DIRECTIONS TO THE UNIVERSITY: The University of Cape Town's Groote Schuur Campus is situated on the slopes of Devil's Peak in the suburb of Rondebosch. To reach the Upper Campus from the city, drive along De Waal Drive passing Groote Schuur Hospital on the way. Just beyond the Old Mill on your left, take the Rosebank/University turn-off. Turn right at the traffic lights and go under the De Waal Drive bridge to the northern entrance of the campus.

DIRECTIONS TO THE DEPARTMENT: In order to park on Upper Campus you have to obtain a temporary parking disc which can be obtained from the Information Centre upon entry into UCT. Proceed up Ring Road past the access controlled security gates. You will pass a first bus stop on the left - keep going to the top of Ring Road. Next to the second bus stop (this is West Stop, if you are taking the Jammie shuttle you need to take this stop) and you will see South Lane to the left. The EGS department is situated to the right down South Lane, in the Environmental & Geographical Science building. PARKING ON UPPER CAMPUS The Upper Campus of UCT has limited parking. A parking disc is required if one needs to park beyond the security booms closer to the department. On the first day, please stop at the Information Centre on entering UCT and you can get a visitor pass if you are lucky they may issue it for the whole duration of the course. You will need the car registration number for this. Due to the ongoing construction activities, parking spaces are further limited please ensure that you park in a legal visitor s parking space! TRANSPORT FROM HOTEL Transfer from the hotel to upper campus has been arranged for those making use of our arranged accommodation. The Upper Eastside Hotel shuttle will be available in the morning and will also come to pick up guests to transfer back to the hotel in the evening. Please take note if you have arranged your own accommodation you will be required to arrange your own transport to and from the Winter School venue each day at your own expense. REGISTRATION ON DAY 1 Registration will take place between 8:45-9:00am at the entrance of the Department. If you are delayed please proceed to join the group in the room and we will complete the process during the tea break. If you need assistance, please go to Room 4.01 up one level and left hand side office next to the stairs. PROGRAMME Please note that each day will begin at 9am and the program for each day will end between 17:00-18:00. A course dinner has been planned for Tuesday 8th July, at one of the local restaurants. The dress code for this event is smart-casual. The rest of the winter school programme dress code is casual. There are no organised events for the weekend and participants are free to use this time as they would like. LUNCH AND REFRESHMENTS All lunches, tea and coffee during the winter school (i.e week days) will be provided for the participants. The tea room on the lower floor of the EGS building will be used for this purpose. Catering is done through an outside service provider and the food is Halaal friendly. Please make sure you have alerted us of any special dietary requirements if you have not done so already.

WEATHER IN CAPE TOWN The average maximum temperature for July is 18 C and minimum 7 C. It is also the rainy season and we may experience a number of strong storms. It is best to bring a raincoat or wind-breaker if possible. It is best to dress in layers in Cape Town although the morning may start cold and rainy, you may find that by lunch time it is sunny and warm. Please note that the inside venues do not have central heating and may therefore be cold in the mornings! ACCOMMODATION VENUE Accommodation for some participants has been arranged by the organisers. Participants have been booked into The Upper Eastside Hotel (www.uppereastsidehotel.co.za). This hotel is located in Woodstock close to the University. Breakfast is provided at the hotel. There is a coffee shop, hairdresser, laundry, kiosk, gym and ATM available within the hotel complex. The hotel provides a complimentary shuttle service to the V&A Waterfront. Accommodation has been booked from Sunday 29 th June to Saturday 12 th July (not including the night of the 12 th ). If you arrive before or leave after these dates please let us know so that we can adjust the booking. Any extra cost will be for your account. MOBILE PHONES AND INTERNET There are a number of service providers in South Africa; Vodacom, MTN, CellC and 8ta. All these companies have cheap SIM cards for sale in many shops. Before buying a SIM card in South Africa you need to provide your ID and proof of address, so if you are planning on buying a South African SIM card, be sure to bring these documents. If you are able to bring your phone please try and set up roaming in the rare event that we need to contact you once you get to South Africa. The hotel rooms all have WiFi access and our venue at UCT also has internet access if needed. TRANSPORT AND AIRPORT TRANSFERS Airport transfer within Cape Town will be arranged for participants who are making use of our arranged accommodation and require this service. CSAG/UCT is not responsible for airport transfers once outside of Cape Town. Please take note if you have arranged your own accommodation you will be required to arrange your airport transfer to and from your chosen accommodation venue at your own expense. Please note that you have to provide me with flight details in order to complete this process-once you have the details of your flight confirmed, please let us know. The company being used for airport transfer is Upper Eastside Hotel shuttle. One of their representatives will be waiting for you and will take you to the hotel (look for someone holding a placard with your name). Should you arrive and not find anyone please go to their kiosk in the foyer of the airport. Public transport within Cape Town is via train, bus or mini-bus taxis. Your accommodation venue

and the University are close to all of these. Although, it is generally safe to use public transport, you may find that it is easier to use private taxis. The following numbers are provided you can ring and ask to be picked up and also check on fares beforehand. You may also find taxis in the town centres. Rikkies Taxis 0861 745 547 This cab service is available for point-to-point rides as well as share rides around Cape Town CBD and Waterfront area. Unicab 021 448 1720 Grab a Cab 021 556 6344 Excite Meter Cab 021 418 4444 Taxi rates can be negotiated and it s best to ask before departing on the cost of the ride. MyCiti Bus Service The City of Cape Town has recently launched a new bus service within the city. It is the cheapest way around some of the city s tourist spots. The bus routes are all accessible from the Civic Centre in town. SECURITY Cape Town is reasonably safe but a lot of crime does exist, some are of a very violent nature and therefore, precautions must be taken. Be street wise, and don't carry all your cash with you - use your hotel safe that is available in all rooms. Use marked taxis or buses to move between areas. Try not to have cameras loose and make yourself look like a local. Do not allow strangers to assist you at ATM's as there are several ATM scams in operation. Try to explore in groups and stick to well-lit streets especially at night and this also includes the walking routes up Table Mountain. If driving, store parcels out of sight in the boot of the car and do not leave luggage unattended. Park in well lit areas at night and drive with your doors locked and your windows closed. Be alert at traffic lights. SHOPPING There are many malls and craft markets within easy reach in Cape Town. Some are listed here; Cavendish Square large mall in Claremont with over 200 shops, cinemas and restaurants. Greenmarket Square craft market, off Burg Street in the centre of town with carvings, masks and drums, beadwork, jewellery, clothing, leatherwork and ceramics. Canal Walk - a large shopping mall just outside the Cape Town city centre, with hundreds of stores, cinemas, indoor karting track, skate park, gaming arcade, and restaurants, open until 2100. Located on the N1 ten minutes drive north of the city. V &A Waterfront lots of high quality shops, cinemas and restaurants at the city harbour. SIGHT-SEEING Cape Town is a world renowned tourist destination and has many attractions for visitors. Some of the more popular destinations and activities are listed here. Table mountain the city s largest landmark. A cable car runs from the bottom of Tafelberg road to the top of the mountain. There are many walks at the top and one can also hike to the top via the many paths up. However, please note that some of these paths are quite difficult and it s advisable to go with an experienced person.

Kirstenbosch Gardens botanical gardens situated near the University of Cape Town with a large variety of plants unique to South Africa. Beautiful garden to spend a sunny afternoon strolling in. Cape Point southern most point of the peninsula. The drive to Cape Point is also very beautiful but does take about 40 minutes. Robben Island located about 30minutes boat ride from the waterfront. Prison where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 27 years. Visits to this venue need to be pre-booked and will depend on weather conditions on the day. Wine tasting Western Cape has several wine producing regions. Some of these include Constantia, Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschoek. There are hundreds of farms in the area and many are open for tastings. NB if you are interested in sightseeing and do not have your own transport, a good option is the open top double-decker bus City sightseeing. A 2-day ticket will cost ~R200 and will take you to all the major tourist destinations http://www.citysightseeing.co.za FOOD TAKE-AWAY & RESTAURANTS The area surrounding the University has a number of take-away shops and restaurants. These are usually open every day although some will close early on Saturday and remain closed on Sunday (usually small family run outlets). There are also a few retail shops in Mowbray, Rondebosch and Claremont which includes; Shoprite, Checkers, Pick & Pay, Clicks and Woolworths. You will be able to buy most of the necessary groceries and toiletries at these shops. If you require any help in finding/buying something whilst you are in Cape Town, please ask one of the organisers and we will do our best to help you. MEDICAL DOCTORS AND PHARMACIES There are a number of pharmacies in Rondebosch and Claremont. Medical staff is also available on lower campus and private practices are open in Rondebosch in case there is a need for a doctor or dentist.
