Every year people get cards, candy and flowers to celebrate this day of love. According to www.ducksters.com, it is the second most popular holiday to send cards after Christmas. There are about 190 million cards sent out on this day. Nobody knows when Valentine s Day was first celebrated. But we do know it is the day in which people celebrate love. It is a celebration of love for married people, people who are dating and for friendships. We found out from this same website that a long, long, long time ago, during the time that is called the Middle Ages, girls would eat strange foods because they thought it would help them dream of their future husbands. The common colors for Valentine s Day are red and pink. Cards during this time are usually decorated with pictures of hearts, red roses or the little man called Cupid who has a bow and arrow. Also, people give chocolate candy with their cards for Valentine s Day. Kids get into the Valentine s Day fun too. Most times they exchange cards with their classmates. We love having Valentine s parties at school. We get to bring a box to keep all of the candy and cards that our friends in class give us. Below are some more fun facts we found on www.ducksters.com If you include cards given at school and handmade cards, the number of Valentine's exchanged is estimated to be nearly 1 billion. Because so many students give cards, teachers receive the most cards of any profession. Around 85% of Valentine's cards are purchased by women. Around 73% of flowers are purchased by men. The oldest love poem is said to be written on a clay tablet by the Ancient Sumerians over 5,000 years ago. Around 36 million heart shaped boxes of chocolate will be given as gifts on Valentine's Day. Millions of pet owners buy gifts for their pets on this day. My Thanksgiving Bahamas Vacation Xavier Price 5th Grade, Ms. Smith s Class The Bahamas Flag Over the Thanksgiving holiday, my entire family went on a beautiful and relaxing cruise in the Bahamas. For five days we visited Freeport, Bahamas and Nassau, Bahamas. We did plenty of activities on our Bahamas vacation. We spent three days on the cruise ship and two days visiting Freeport and Nassau. This was my first time ever going on a cruise or to the Bahamas and I LOVED IT! Before I describe my vacation, I want to tell you a little about Nassau and Freeport, Bahamas. According to the website www.en.wikipedia.org, the Bahamas is made up of 700 islands in the Atlantic Ocean. Nassau is one of those islands and is the capital of the Bahamas. It is about 1,035 miles south from Louisville, Kentucky. The national bird of Nassau is the pink flamingo. Most of the houses there were pink too. Taino Beach in Freeport, Bahamas Freeport, Bahamas is also south of Louisville, Kentucky. Freeport had one of the best beaches in the Bahamas called Taino Beach. The water at that beach was clear blue. The sand was a perfect tan color. We spent most of our time at Taino Beach. I almost stepped on a crab while walking on Taino Beach. When we got on the cruise ship, we all split up and did whatever we wanted to do. There was countless stuff to do on the ship. I never got bored because there was always something I could do day or night. The most memorable thing on the cruise was when our waiter told me to get up and dance in front of everyone. I was very nervous because I didn t know if people were going to laugh at me or what. I felt relieved after the dance because it was over. Some people did laugh at me, but I didn t feel embarrassed. I started laughing with them. This was probably the best vacation that I have taken with my family. The beaches were beautiful. The islands were amazing. Spending time with my family was fantastic. If you are ever planning a vacation, plan to visit the Bahamas. You will not be disappointed! My family and I on the beach in Freeport,Bahamas Me and my new friends that I made on the boat enjoying the pool.
