12 OPINION wwwbenonicitytimescoza Friday April 28 2017 THE VOICE The Benoni Town Hall was closed by the metro for refurbishment in 2014 Not much has happened since then, despite the metro saying it would be reopened in 14 months We asked Benonians what they think of the public building standing empty PHINDILE SKOSANA Daveyton: It s not a good thing Why close it for so long, but not do any refurbishment? It s a waste of the building LEBOHANG PHEKO Westdene: It s a waste of public utilities It could be used for public events It was used for workshops and the like before LIENTJIE VAN TONDER Cloverdene: Everything is like that these days They close monumental or public buildings and then nothing happens ERNST VAN TONDER Cloverdene: They closed it down and didn t refurbish It shouldn t have been closed for such a long time ROD SCHEEPERS Northmead: It is shocking All the amateur drama societies that used the Benoni Town Hall cannot do so now Send your letters to us by email bctletters@caxtoncoza or fax 011 849 5966 Your contact detail is required Metro departments are a mixed bag Martin Cartwright writes: I collected a wheelie bin on April 21 as our municipality has decided that a system that has been in situ for the past 30 years is no longer up to scratch The use of garbage bags seems to work fine Based on your article in last week s BCT, I decided to do the right thing and collect my wheelie bin at 4 Golden Drive It was not to be I was advised that I could not collect the bin if I didn t have my original ID, a copy thereof and a copy of my water and lights account, all this in order to assist our service provider, the Ekurhuleni council My concerns revolve around the security aspect of me providing a copy of my personal document at an area that is most definitely not secure, and as you are well aware, all that is required for identity fraud is an ID number Suffice it to say that I will collect my wheelie bin when I do not have to put myself at risk in this way My second point, and this time a compliment to the electrical department and more specifically to a gentleman called Johan who was efficient, assisted me on a query on my electricity account I have been a resident in my home for the past 17 years Over the last eight months I have changed every light fitting in my home to energy efficient bulbs, but my electricity account continued to rise I queried this via the e-siyakhoka website I was delighted to receive an email acknowledging my query and within two days the ball had begun to roll It was surprising to find that the meter I was paying on continued to run even though everything in my house was switched off Enter Johan two days later, we were able to determine that the meter which was being read and used to calculate my account was actually allocated to my neighbour The correct addresses are, however, clearly indicated on the correct meters Johan did his investigation and I was credited with the difference in my reading vs that of my neighbour for the past three years Thanks to Johan and the electricity department, you went the extra mile I just wish your colleagues at solid waste would I refuse to accept this service A M Zwarts writes: I read the article in the Benoni City Times regarding the wheelie bins I stay in Brentwood Park (High Road) and on numerous occasions tried to explain to Ekurhuleni that I cannot collect a bin My car is too small and I work during the week During the previous roll-out my son tried to collect one on my behalf, but there was no joy - out of stock In a case like this what can we do? Surely the bins can be delivered? I stay near the retirement village and some of the residents in my area also don t have transport Possible cause of bird deaths R Heathfield writes: To your reader noting the deaths of pigeons, Midrand is experiencing the same phenomenon It includes hadedas, pigeons and owls, and some are seen literally dropping from the sky They are found daily in large numbers and we estimate over a thousand have been found in recent months We suspect an air pollutant, since the toxicology reports find no evidence of bacteria or viral causes Your reader is welcome to email me for the reports I will miss friendly workers Johan Jansen van Nieuwenhuizen writes: I live in Ninth Avenue, Northmead I do not have transport to get to Golden Drive to collect a bin Surely the council could have used some of their trucks to deliver these bins door-to-door seeing that they want to make it easier for them to pick up rubbish? You liked us on Facebook As stated by the council, if no bin is collected, then no pick-up of black bags will happen I will then deduct that service off my account each month for no service And I guess, a few people from the council will also be unemployed by automation? I need assistance to collect and if they were to be open on a Saturday, then a family member would have been able to assist These guys picking up the bags every Friday were so energetic All these years, you hear them first - running ahead of the truck and then only hear the truck - always friendly, greeting you, running past your house Is that era going to go down with the wheelie bins? Car guards are not necessary Anonymous writes: I know this subject has been raised in the past, but I would like touch on it again I am finding more frequently that car guards are drinking on the job and are almost harassing people who shop at centres I have found that even if I don t exit the car and my wife or children quickly run in, that car guards still expect payment Guards do not prevent car theft; you are simply hijacked in a different location, possibly in your own driveway at gunpoint and on some occasions they enter your property putting your family s life in danger I prefer to support shops where I don t have to deal with irritating car guards I believe that shopping centres should divide parking areas to include or exclude car guards so that shoppers can decide for themselves if they want to make use of such service I wasn t surprised to read about armed robberies in some of our local shops where the car guards saw nothing Post does not arrive on time P Turton writes: I refer to D Raubenheimer s letter in the April 7 edition I also live in Rynfield and my post box is at Northmead and I experience serious problems with mail delivery In my case I usually expect to receive two letters per quarter from my UK bank The last correspondence received from them was mid- February last year I have phoned the bank quarterly enquiring about the missing mail and they confirm that all the letters were posted The bank will not, due to security reasons, send anything by email I am forced to phone the UK every quarter for the information required or they will send by registered letter at a cost Can I claim that from the Post Office? Maybe a new day is dawning a birthday card sent on March 2 from the UK was received in the same month Your reactions online Run, run, run at the Robor Scaffolding Marathon Jolene Van Der Westhuizen: Hopefully runners will respect the properties this year I have to patrol my property as runners choose to urinate on my walls and even take a dump in Cosmos Park Makhosazana Ndlovu: Ready for the half marathon Pauline Davis and Deneys Conradie residents disappointed at meeting postponement Robyn Liza Vorster: Makes me so angry that the older residents of these fl ats are treated so badly - where is the sense of humanity and respect? 16 BUSINESS wwwbenonicitytimescoza Friday April 28 2017 Ensure you do what you enjoy Erik van Dijk Never do what you don t enjoy; if the work you do brings you pleasure, success will follow automatically Ed Hatton spoke about the lessons he learned during his life in business, at the A-Round Ten Business Clusters (ARTBC) meeting, hosted by Gryphon Enterprise Development, recently The ARTBC is a business breakfast forum, featuring guest speakers who share their stories of success and what they learnt along the way The breakfast was recently held at the Marechelle Country Estate, in Kempton Park Hatton, who works as a business coach called The Marketing Director, dropped out of university and went into the early information technology industry I worked on computers which would have filled half this room, he said in the conference hall Hatton soon progressed into a sales position I wasn t great at it, and I was a bit lazy, he said While working in Pretoria, I realised there were many The Ford Wildlife Foundation (FWF) handed over a new Ford Ranger bakkie to the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) and its Cheetah Metapopulation Project on April 20 at Casseys Auto Benoni Ford The foundation works to increase the range, numbers and status of wild cheetahs in South Africa The handover forms part of Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa s (FMCSA) commitment to the conservation and preservation of the environment in Sub-Saharan Africa The vehicle will be used by the senior field officer Vincent van der Merwe, who coordinates the National Cheetah Metapopulation Project to effect cheetah translocations across South Africa by driving immobilised cheetahs to their new safe homes Ed Hatton (left, guest speaker) accepts the symbolic gryphon from Jacques van Heerden (Gryphon Enterprise Development CEO) lawyers, so I decided to design a system for them The young salesman discovered attorneys had a common problem which could be tackled by computers He applied the solution to his sales strategy and made a lot of money and had a lot of fun There I learnt my first lesson: sell to fulfil the customers needs, Hatton said He soon moved into the marketing division of his company, running one of the first media campaigns for computers in South Africa Eventually his manager transferred Hatton to another division, saying he didn t fit the marketing role well I then learnt to always push the limits, until you fail Failure is how we learn, Hatton said Hatton s next venture was at a company which had a strong brand for selling computers Your brand is what people in your market think of your product and that comes from its quality, he said Hatton eventually left and started The Marketing Director He helped small and medium enterprises with marketing strategies It went well, but in the early 2000s the death of two friends and his wife s diagnosis with cancer halted his career We got through it with fortitude and humour, the businessman recalled When I was diagnosed with cancer, we did the same, and we re both survivors today Another lesson Hatton learnt was that one must never do what one doesn t enjoy He returned to being The Marketing Director, and hopes to go on for some time For more information on the ARTBC, contact Bonnie Chimanikire on 011 849 9481 Endangered Wildlife Trust receives new bakkie KIDS UNDER YOUR FEET? S&P downgraded South Africa s sovereign credit rating to BB+ with a negative outlook from BBB- grade on April 3, saying the fi ring of our highly respected fi nance minister Pravin Gordhan posed a major risk to fi scal policy Did Gigaba go to introduce himself? Or did he go there to put out a forest fi re with a tin cup? I think engaging with ratings agencies is positive, but personally, I think he had no choice Just a day before his trip to go and engage, S&P warned that South Africa could suffer further downgrades From the horse s mouth Gardner Rusike, the associate director and lead analyst for South Africa at S&P, said: There are risks that potential growth outcomes could be weakened, especially with uncertainty that s been brought along in a year where you may not get strong decisions for strong reform programmes S&P are also keeping a close eye on later in the year where Rusike warned that jostling ahead of the ruling African National Congress s conference at yearend, where the party will elect leaders to contest general elections in 2019, was likely to distract government from implementing economic reforms The next downgrade Thank goodness Gigaba s trip to attend meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in the United States will include a meeting with the one agency that has not downgraded us yet, Moody s Many analysts are of the opinion that the fact that Moody s has put us on a 90 day review could spell danger They have lagged the other ratings agencies in terms of our credit rating The danger is that in order to align themselves with their peers they would need to impose a double downgrade Downgrades to junk from these agencies could see South Africa drop out of global bond indexes and force funds which track them, or which are prohibited from holding sub-investment grade securities, to sell out of our bonds Our net debt currently sits just below 50 per cent of gross domestic product, at around R22-trillion The cost of servicing this debt is the fastest rising item on the balance sheet I doubt strongly that the currency can remain resilient Place your bets Now that I ve got that rant out of my system it s time to get logical Last week I explained why our market has been rising through all this turmoil, and it s time to invest accordingly Investing in defensive stocks that benefi t from a weaker rand is the way to go (for the moment) I don t see much more strength in our currency, especially with a Moody s decision pending As usual, I am always happy to engage with my readers so feel free to mail me with any questions or comments at robp@unumcoza

Friday April 28 2017 wwwbenonicitytimescoza NEWS 29 Your weekly Caxton motoring guide Week 17 25 April 2017 Editor Letters Telephone : 011 889 0907 Johannesburg East Edition Advertising A supplement to Benoni City Times, Boksburg Advertiser, Kempton Express Distribution: 139 450 copies PAGE 2 Baleno shows Suzuki s mature side OPINION Motorsport marvellous in Dubai wwwautodealercoza Thousands of used cars available Toyota 86 now more engaging AT THE beginning of the year, editor Sean Nurse jetted off to a freezing Finland where he got to experience the latest Toyota 86 on ice into our market back in 2012, so it was about time the Japanese automaker gave it a refresh Now that it has landed on our shores, I headed off to the Red Star Raceway near Delmas just outside of Johannesburg, to give it a go quite tell it apart from the previous model Upon closer inspection though, the changes became more apparent For starters, the front facia is all-new with a revised front bumper, new LED headlamps and daytime running LEDs When viewed from the side, I noticed the new 10-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels, front wheel The 86 logo has also been updated and placed lower down At the rear, there is a new diffuser, mildly tweaked LED lights and a new wing-like spoiler as opposed to the previous integrated unit Overall, the exterior changes are very subtle, yet Toyota claims each one was made to enhance aerodynamics As the times are moving ever so quickly, so too are customer needs when it comes to the interior of a sporty car We want buttons on the steering wheel as well as a minimum of two display demands One can expect an LCD colour infotainment system, as well as a 41-inch TFT display located within the instrument cluster Here you can view trip information, lap times and even G-Forces, all of which can be controlled via a newly designed multi-function steering wheel As for the luxury side of things, a new carbon- door panels and the ventilation control panel on the centre console A complimentary suede-like dashboard facia, which adds to the overall sporty look of the interior The engine remains unchanged and customers can expect a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox The engine remains a rev-happy have more power, in fact, what it does have is the ability to fully utilise that grunt In addition, both the suspension and electronics have been tweaked True to the concept that the 86 should deliver the purest driving enjoyment possible, Toyota has adjusted the Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system to add a new Track mode in which the driver is given an even greater range of handling, braking and turning control traction control system to a minimum level, removing a layer of electronic intervention so the driver can apply their own car control skills for a more engaging experience behind the wheel After a quick blast on the road and the track, I must say that I enjoyed the Toyota 86 It is engaging to drive and speaks to the petrolhead at which it is aimed mercilessly around a track, and then driven to the shops afterwards I do feel that the R449 000 price for the base model might put potential buyers off despite the array of standard features Now what if money was no object and you wanted a Toyota 86 race car? Will it be any good? Well, after the local launch, I jetted off to Abu Dhabi to visit the Yas Marina Formula One circuit where I got to experience the Toyota TRD86 Cup racing series Turn to the back page to read about that PRICING ad 86 R449 600 86 High R494 400 86 High AT R519 400

30 EAST PAGE 2 WEEK 17 ROAD TEST NEWS wwwbenonicitytimescoza Friday April 28 2017 @autodealersa Autodealercoza wwwautodealercoza Thousands of used cars available @sean_carnut_ @seanurzz SUZUKI SOUTH Africa is known for selling reliable, economical and positively inoffensive products that are liked by owners and the motoring media alike So when I had the opportunity to drive one of the brand s latest models, the Baleno, I went in with high expectations We re in an era of turbocharging and downsizing, but as we ve seen, many manufacturers are now opting for the upsizing method or keeping displacements the same as reports from and the general public that these turbocharged makers claim in real life when compared to It was therefore not disappointing from my side when I heard that Suzuki s new 10-litre BoosterJet turbocharged three-pot, for now at least, isn t destined for local shores in the Baleno range Instead, we have received the 14-litre naturally aspirated K14B motor with 68kW/130Nm as the only engine option, which consists of two manual variants as well as a solitary automatic This engine appears inadequate, however, the vehicle has a kerb weight of 915kg, meaning it never feels sluggish or not up to the task, while the well-sorted chassis and its lightweight make for a car that feels at home tackling the bends In terms of fuel consumption, as is customary to replicate or come close to, with me achieving nearly matching the claimed 51-litres/100km I was fortunate to have the top-of-the-range Baleno shows Suzuki s mature side manual GLX on test, which commands a R30 000 premium over the entry-level GL For your additional capital outlay there are features such as cruise control, 16-inch alloy wheels, an extra four airbags for a total of six, chrome running LED s and a 62-inch Pioneer touchscreen infotainment system If you re like me and looking at the Baleno and then I think I ve surmised the happenings within the Suzuki line-up You see, the current Swift is due for a replacement immanently, a replacement which will share the same platform as the Baleno However, having seen where the brand is going from a stylistic and ergonomics perspective with the new Swift, I feel that the Baleno exists purely to satiate the need for a more basic and low-key city car whereas the new Swift is seemingly aimed at the millennial generation who demand funky styling inside and out while also placing an emphasis on running costs and affordability quite an ordinary vehicle; there aren t any technical innovations to marvel at, but there s something quite endearing about simplicity From an exterior styling perspective, I found the Baleno to be an attractive vehicle with a design that creates an impression of width, making the car look quite a bit bigger than it really is That is not to say it s small inside, with a great deal of passenger space for occupants at the rear, along with a 355-litre boot which increases to 756-litres and received compliments regarding the space in The Baleno is a solid product in many ways, it s practical, reasonably priced considering the is synonymous with reliability and longevity For those looking for something with more character and charm, perhaps wait for the new Swift As a tool for getting you from A-B though, the Baleno ticks all the boxes ad R229 900 THIS ROAD TEST WAS FUELLED BY ALBERANTE GM ALBERTON 011 861 8100 GENERAL MOTORS Like us on Facebook: wwwfacebookcom/trunesmotors To view and apply online visit wwwtrunesmotorscoza
