Among over a hundred private islands of more than 20 acres existing in France, Saint Riom island is the only inhabited, and the sole tenured island at the hands of a single private owner. The land and the buildings are listed by the French National Herita ge, the island is protected by the National Environment Laws & Re gulations and earmarked Natura 2000. The island lies south west of Bréhat Archipelago, north east of Paimpol, one nautical mile off from a land point, stretches 800 by 400 m. ; its peak reaches 43 m. The islands enjoys an oceanic climate, rainfall average is 20% less than in Paimpol i.e. 40 mm. during the summer and 80 mm. in winter. Britany As tradition goes, Saint Riom, a monk hailing either from or Ireland, founded a monastery on the island on the 5th. century. Some traces of it can still be seen today. For this reason, count Al ain de Goelo, who had the Beaufort abbey built on 13th. century, named the island after Saint Riom when he bought it. 2
In year 1900, Saint Riom Island was acquired by the Hamelle family, then by their step son, French Sen. Laniel, brother of the then French Prime Minister. As from 1999, extensive rehabilitation is conducted under the aegis of the Chief Architect in charge of France's Heritage Buildings, with the cooperation of members of the Guild of Royal Carpenters. Farmland tenured since 1978 has been converted to state of the art agricultural methods. Saint Riom island hosts the seat of the Institut de l'estran. It welcomes all guests with a special interest in surroundings off the beaten path to spend their holidays as well as firms & organizations looking for a secluded place suitable for strategic & think out seminars. 3
